Welcome to your May edition of BAMBI News. It’s hard to believe that we are al- most halfway through 2018 already. The theme of this month’s magazine is ‘get Wserious about play’. Sometimes as busy parents we can get consumed with our family’s schedules and commitments and forget the importance of carving out some time for ourselves, to kick back and have fun. The recent Songkran celebrations with water fights on the street was the perfect opportunity to unleash our inner child and indulge in some purely joyful fun, though I will never understand why the water must be ice cold!

It's important too that our kids see us as fun people — they learn so much more from what we do than what we say. So being willing to step outside our comfort Emma and Akiko, Photo by Azusa Uchida zones and prioritize fun and exploration is good parenting behaviour to model, and also lets us act like big kids once in a thrill rides, but I did it and had so much loose and have fun, so make some space while, so everyone wins. Getting the entire family to listen in to a story and then possibly sharing thoughts about it can also be a great way to spend more quality time with family too.

Finally, I would like to finish with a quote from Mem Fox, a well-known Australian children’s author, who says about young children on the first steps of their read- ing journey: “Read at least three stories a day: it may be the same story three times. Children need to hear a thousand stories before they can begin to learn to read. Or the same story a thousand times!” Now that is a whole lot of books, an enormous amount of time invested and a long time spent sharing special time together. BAMBI looks back at the previous calendar year and remembers all that has been done and accomplished. Here is a summary of our activities and achievements in 2017 and also a small look into our plans for 2018.

An important update: Many of you may remember that we started 2015 with a shocking find, discovering that, for several years, money had been systematically and fraudulently removed from BAMBI’s bank account by a former and highly trusted member of the BAMBI Committee. The case has since been in the hands of the Childbirth & Breastfeeding Foundation’s (CBFT) lawyers and going through due legal process in the criminal court. CBFT and BAMBI Committee are pleased to announce that the outcome of the criminal proceedings in summer of 2017, secured the return of 5 million baht, a conservative and best estimate of what had been taken fraudulently by the person in question. The BAMBI committee plan to use these returned funds both to enhance the services we provide to our members and to also expand our support of good causes through BAMBI charities for projects identified throughout Thailand.

On Saturday, March 31st, BAMBI children were treated to a morning of exciting sporting activities, geared to help move those little legs. Kids were divided into teams ac- cording to their age group. There were no major winners Oor losers, but definitely lots of cheers and laughter. Despite the unexpected late morning rain shower, the kids had fun, made lots of new friends and enjoyed the yummy lunch.

Thank you Kids First International Kindergarten for opening your doors to welcome BAMBI families and for giving us such a big feast.

Falafels, a Middle Eastern staple of chickpeas and fragrant herbs, has enjoyed worldwide popularity - thanks to its nutrition-packed, tasty and versatile nature!

Chickpeas are to the younger generation what spinach was to my generation’s “Popeye”. They are the muscle builders. St Andrews International School Bangkok generously hosted the sale at their Primary Campus, with over 35 vendors and our guest charity tables from Second Chance Bangkok, Roy Rak Beading and Central Thailand Mission. SDoors opened at 9.30am with a queue around the corner with lucky shoppers snag- ging numerous bargains. From table fees and entrance donations, BAMBI raised over 24,000 for Second Chance Bangkok, an organization that supports women from Khlong Toei through providing employment in upcycling donated items to sell. For more information or to request a pick-up of items you want to donate, visit: www. scbkk.org. Thank you to everyone for your support. The Yard Sale will return soon!

BAMBI holds regular playgroups and activities around town, open to both BAMBI members and non-members. Please always check BAMBI’s online calendar before setting out, as our playgroups are run by volunteers and are occasionally subject to last-minute cancellations. Before going to a non- BAMBI playgroup, please contact the school/venue to confirm that it is open and the playgroup is running. We would love some help with our playgroups and activities, so please volunteer if you have some time to spare at your favourite group. It’s easier and more rewarding than you think to get involved.
