Killeen just last week after holding it down the previous 13 weeks. Goggin’s lead over Killeen is now $6,345. “JUICES FLOWING” – After his victory on Sunday, News Sentinel Open champion Kirk Triplett reflected on the competition in Knoxville: “I’ve played a lot of years on the PGA TOUR….but feeling those competitive juices down the stretch and seeing all these great young players made me feel a lot younger. The quality of these golfers over the last 15-20 years has gotten better and better and the game is in great hands.” Triplett is eligible for the Champions Tour March 29 th of next year. RINGING ENDORSEMENT – While discussing the contributions of the Nationwide Tour to the golf landscape with co-host Erik Kuselias during Golf Channel’s “Morning Drive” last Tuesday, Gary Williams made the following observation: “I absolutely believe it is one of the great decisions that was ever made. A lot of people didn’t think this thing (Nationwide Tour) could work. Deane Beman made it happen and Ben was right there in the beginning. He wanted his name associated with it… It is one of the greatest things that has happened to American golf in the last 50 years.” ARNIE ENCORE – Western Pennsylvania’s Arnold Palmer returns as honorary chairman of the 2nd Mylan Classic. Sam Saunders is in the field as was the case last year when Mr. Palmer went out to Southpointe Country Club on Friday afternoon to watch his grandson play. ROCCO MEDIATE AND JOHN DALY IN MYLAN FIELD – Two fan favorites, Rocco Mediate and John Daly , are among the 156 players entered in the Mylan Classic. Mediate is from nearby Greensburg, Pa. Last year, he was on the leader board after opening with 67-69. A third-round 78 derailed his run, which ended in a T32 finish. Daly is coming off a T32 finish himself in last week’s News Sentinel Open. The pair will conduct a nine-hole exhibition on Tuesday. MYLAN CLASSIC BUILDING ON FIRST-YEAR SUCCESS – The Mylan Classic got underway on Monday with the Taggart Global Celebrity Pro-Am. It featured an impressive roster of prominent Pittsburgh sports personalities, including former Steelers Robin Cole, L.C. Greenwood and Merrill Hoge , former Pirate stars Bill Mazeroski and Kent Tekulve , Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma and the Pen’s greatest player ever, Mario Lemieux. The Classic, which made a very successful debut last year, has a full slate of clinics, concerts and other activities planned throughout the week for golf fans and families alike. The Mylan Classic’s “TICKETS Fore CHARITY™ presented by ANSYS” program has seen a 76% increase in tickets sold this year - up from $234,000 last year to $411,000 this year – with one week to go. STEVE WHEATCROFT / FAMILIAR TURF – Steve Wheatcroft returns to Southpointe Country Club a Nationwide Tour winner this year, having captured the Melwood Prince George’s County (Md.) He finished T3 in last year’s inaugural Mylan Classic. Currently ninth on the money list, the native of nearby Indiana, Pa. is seeking a return to the PGA TOUR where he played full time in 2007 and 2010. MARTIN FLORES / RISING IN THE RANKS – Former University of Oklahoma Sooner Martin Flores has quietly played his way into the 14 th spot on the money list. On Sunday in Knoxville, he posted his third top-seven finish (T5) of the summer to improve six spots. After a slow start to the year, the Forth Worth, Texas native has eight top-30 finishes in his last ten starts and hovered between 24 th and now 14 th in earnings. Flores and Anthony Kim were teammates at OU. “GETAWAY” PROMOTION ENTERS 5 th WEEK – Golf Channel’s “Nationwide Tour Hawaii Getaway” promotion enters its fifth week.
