There was much to enjoy -- raffles, games, music, sports, food, and Pat Jennette, Publisher & Editor 7HDPZRUN%DVNHWEDOODQG/LIH In Pittsburgh, few other sports matter as little as professional basketball. That has much to do with the fact that, despite our sports-centric mentality, our town has been snubbed by the glitzy NBA, with its comparatively small pool of stand-out players. That's hardly to say, though, that Pittsburgh isn't a basketball town. It's just one that's embraced college and high school basketball to fill a void left by the one major professional sport that's snubbed us, or visa versa. Adherents to the college sport often talk about the sense of teamwork and lack of spotlight and ball hogging stars. That seems perfectly in line with the Pittsburgh sports fan attitude, one that traditionally prefers team play, defense, and toughness over flashy offense. I am one of many, for instance, who was greatly saddened when it was announced that Pitt would be leaving the Big East, a basketball conference known for its defense and grit, for the ACC. Football television contracts being what they are, it was probably inevitable. I now feel lucky enough to have witnessed a moment in Hartford, Connecticut, when Pitt center Dejuan Blair caught a rebound out of the air, along with Hasheem Thabeet's arm, and flipped both over his back. Thabeet crumpled onto the floorboards, but was still called for the foul, while Pitt went on to usurp UConn for its first-ever victory against a top-seeded team for its first-ever top national ranking in team history. In July, a Division I pro-am league will be coming to Montour, a school that's had plenty of its own basketball success in recent years. We write about that league in this issue of Allegheny West Magazine, and about the Montour alum who grew that league out of a small, high school summer basketball program that he built into one of the largest of its kind on the East Coast. Sure, when the pro-am plays, some players will be better known than others, but there likely won't be Doug Hughey standouts who can take over a game on their own. Thrown together for a short summer season, they'll have to work that Assistant Editor much harder at developing team chemistry and learning how to work together. That's what it's all about in basketball, and in life. It should be interesting. $OOHJKHQ\:HVW0DJD]LQH-XO\$XJXVW TO REACH US :DOQXW6WUHHW6XLWH,PSHULDO3$ 3KRQH)D[ (0DLODOOHJKHQ\ZHVWPDJD]LQH#FRPFDVWQHW ZZZDOOHJKHQ\ZHVWPDJD]LQHFRP “GOOD NEWS ALWAYS, MAILED & DELIVERED FREE, EVERY TIME”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ontour’s Mitch Moving On 3XEOLVKHU (GLWRU·V1RWHV &KULVWRSKHU5ROLQVRQ)UDQN9LOVDFN 2QWKH+RUL]RQ :5,7(56 Kennedy Garden Club Turns 90 .LOH\%UDG\.DLWOLQ%XVFK $URXQG<RXU7RZQ 'LFN*ORYLHU-RFHO\Q*UHFNR'RXJ+XJKH\ Montour Alum Brings Basketball +HDWKHU6FKLHIHU0XUUD\-HVVLFD:DVLN )LUH%HDW *5$3+,& '(6,*1 Pro-Am Back to His School <RXU+RXVH 6HQDWH 6DUDK+XJKH\ $'9(57,6,1* 6$/(6 <RXU6FKRROV 0LFKHOH6KUDGHU /LEUDU\1HZV :(%0$67(5 ZZZGGVZHEGHVLJQFRP &KDPEHU%XVLQHVV/LQN &2175,%87256 SPECIAL SECTIONS -RH.XOLN.HQQHG\7ZS9)' 0DFDURQL.LG 3LWWVEXUJK$LUSRUW$UHD&KDPEHURI&RPPHUFH &RPPXQLW\&RQQHFWLRQV 5RELQVRQ7RZQVKLS.HQQHG\7RZQVKLS7KRUQEXUJ Celebrating Local Wines! 5RELQVRQ7RZQVKLS/LEUDU\ OUR OTHER PUBLICATIONS Montour School -HQQHWWH&RPPXQLFDWLRQV*URXSDOVRSXEOLVKHVWKH0RRQ MORE INFO (GLWLRQRI$OOHJKHQ\:HVW0DJD]LQHDQGWKH:HVW District News $OOHJKHQ\(GLWLRQRI$OOHJKHQ\:HVW0DJD]LQH $OOHJKHQ\:HVW0DJD]LQH0RQWRXU(GLWLRQLVSXEOLVKHGLQ-DQXDU\ MEMBER: 0DUFK0D\-XO\6HSWHPEHUDQG1RYHPEHUVL[LVVXHVD\HDUE\ -HQQHWWH&RPPXQLFDWLRQV*URXS:DOQXW6WUHHW6XLWH ,PSHULDO3$0DLOHGDQGGLVWULEXWHGIUHHWRUHVLGHQWVDQG EXVLQHVVHVLQ.HQQHG\,QJUDP3HQQVEXU\5RELQVRQ7KRUQEXUJ ABOUT THE COVER DQGDGMDFHQWDUHDV([WUDFRSLHVDYDLODEOHDWPXQLFLSDORIILFHV VFKRROVOLEUDULHVVWRUHVDGYHUWLVHUVKRWHOVDQGEXVLQHVVHV Thornburg resident Danny Begg decked out his bike $YDLODEOHE\PDLOVXEVFULSWLRQIRUDQQXDOO\6WRU\LGHDVZHOFRPHG and himself for the annual Memorial Day festivities in &RPPXQLW\HYHQWVDQGDQQRXQFHPHQWVIURPQRQSURILWJURXSVPXVW EHUHFHLYHGE\WKHWKRIWKHPRQWKSULRUWRSXEOLVKLQJGDWH the community.
