S P T L I G H T SHALER AREA S P T L I G H T SCHOOL January 2020 DISTRICT District Recognitions - Student/Staff Accomplishments National Chemistry Week Illustrated Poetry Contest Shaler Area is proud to announce Alexzia Seng, a junior, won 1st place in the National Chemistry Week Illustrated Poetry Contest sponsored by the Pittsburgh Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS). Entries were judged based upon relevance to and incorporation of this year’s theme, “Marvelous Metals,” word choice and imagery, colorful artwork, adherence to poem style, originality and creativity, and overall presentation. Alexzia Seng wrote and illustrated a poem about gadolinium. Allegheny Valley Honors Band Shaler Area is proud to announce 31 students were accepted into Allegheny Valley Honors ensembles. More than 500 musicians from nine school districts in the Allegheny Valley auditioned for the Allegheny Valley Honors Band. The musicians spent two days rehearsing with guest conductors during the Allegheny Valley Honors Band Festival, January 9-10, and showcased their talents at the concert performance Jan. 10, at Shaler Area High School. The guest conductor for the Senior High Honors Band was Dr. Stephen Gage (Youngstown State University) and the guest conductor for the Junior High Band was composer/conductor/music educator Chad Heiny. The PMEA Junior High District Band is made up of students in 7th, 8th and 9th grade. These students will rehearse and perform at Montour High School on March 6-7, 2020, with guest conductor William Owens, renowned clinician and composer. Grace Cosentino (9th grade) - Clarinet, SAHS Rachel Scierka (9th-grade) - Percussion, SAHS Kara Yarnot (8th-grade) - Clarinet, SAMS Matthew Franks (8th-grade) - Trumpet, SAMS Margarite Boggs (7th-grade) - Trumpet, SAMS Imagine Learning’s Winter Math-a-Thon Congratulations to Keelie Calvin, Shaler Area Elementary sixth-grader, who was one of five students across the country to win Imagine Learning’s Winter MATH-a-Thon. Imagine Learning, a company that develops digital language, literacy, and math program for K-12 students, hosted the math competition over winter break to challenge math students to pass four or more math lessons. An Imagine Learning representative presented Keelie with a commemorative Winter MATH-a- Thon certificate and a Fire Tablet on January 10. SkillsUSA District Competition Four Shaler Area High School students will represent the school district and A.W. Beattie in the annual SkillsUSA District competition. The competitions will take place at Forbes Road and Parkway West career centers, Pittsburgh Technical College, Rosedale Technical College, Carpenters Training Center, and Local 9 on January 20. Tyler Puskar (Carpentry) Chapter Display competition Ben Scariot (ERT) Crime Scene Investigation competition Dylan Quigley (Advertising Design) Promotional Bulletin Board competition Andrew Demchsin (Carpentry) Teamworks competition Fairchild Challenge at Phipps: Challenge #2 Shaler Area High School took 2nd place in the Fairchild Challenge at Phipps: Challenge #2, part of a yearlong environmental competition. In Challenge #2, titled “Shade Our Schools – Leaves Are Cool!,” high school students were tasked with collecting data and creating and illustrated field journal documenting their observations on how temperatures impact a plant’s ability to carry out its basic functions. The data collected by Shaler Area students will be added to similar data collected by students from around the world and used by a scientist at the University of Miami who is conducting a series of experiments to understand how leaf size, shape, and color affect leaf temperature.     WPIAL HALL OF FAME INAUGURAL CLASS ~ 2007 COACHES WALTER “PETE” ANTIMARINO, GATEWAY – One of the most successful football coaches in WPIAL history. Coached Gateway from 1958-89 and had a 236-80-12 record with three WPIAL titles and two co-championships. Also coached at Pitcairn High and had a 255-93- 13 overall record. DAVE NICHOL, MONACA – A coach for two seasons, Nichol won 967 games as Monaca’s coach in basketball and baseball. He coached baseball for 39 years and won 492 games, was a state runner-up once and a WPIAL runner-up once. He coached 30 years in basketball, won 475 games and won both a WPIAL and state championship. DON GRAHAM, NORTH CATHOLIC – The winningest coach in Pennsylvania boys’ basketball history. In 51 years at North Catholic, Graham had an 801-436 record with three Catholic state championships. After North Catholic joined the WPIAL, Graham won 10 section titles. He also was North Catholic’s athletic director for 19 years. PAT CAMPBELL, BETHEL PARK – Made a big splash as a boys’ swimming coach at Bethel Park, McKeesport and West Mifflin. In 21 seasons at Bethel Park (1969-88 and 1996), his teams won an impressive 11 WPIAL titles, including eight in a row at one point. He also won six state championships. His dual meet record was 335-59. TEAMS NORTH HILLS FOOTBALL, 1987 – A team that was known nationwide. Ranked the Number 1 team in the country by USA Today. The team finished 13-0, outscored opponents, 435-20, had 11 shutouts and the first-team defense did not give up a point.

It establishes limits within which freedom of judgment can be exercised. Policy is a governing principle of management. It is a statement that has an effect on the interests of those who come under its jurisdiction. A policy may originate from the constitution, from statute, from local determinations and/or from customary patterns of formal behavior. Policy should accomplish the following: a) State a position taken by the District; b) Grant the authority to act; c) Be sufficiently detailed to give adequate direction; d) Be achievable within the real environment of the school and community; e) Provide for impartial procedures.     WPIAL HALL OF FAME The WPIAL Hall of Fame was organized as a means of recognizing, preserving, and promoting the heritage of interscholastic athletics in Western Pennsylvania. Many individuals and teams have made extraordinary contributions and have achieved superb accomplishments in high school sports. The Hall of Fame aims to honor the contributions and accomplishments of those selected as models for future generations. CLASS OF 2009 COACHES ABE EVERHART – Once made Sports Illustrated Faces in the Crowd for his coaching success. He coached Uniontown for 29 years before retiring after the 1976 season. His career record was 549-149, with four WPIAL championships and two PIAA titles. His 1964 team was undefeated and his teams once won 52 games in a row, which still ties a WPIAL record today. Everhart passed away in 1986, but his legend lives on. CHUCK STULL – You need almost six hands to count the number of WPIAL team tennis championships Stull won. He coached Mt. Lebanon’s boys’ and girls’ teams from 1969-1997 and won a total of 27 WPIAL titles, 13 in boys and 14 in girls. He coached a total of 22 state champions in both singles and doubles combined, and a few of his players went on to become pros. His career record in team matches was 855-70. BRUNO SCHWARZ – Maybe the most renowned boys’ soccer coach in WPIAL history, he coached North Allegheny’s boys’ team for 35 seasons before retiring after 2002. He retired as the winningest coach in PIAA history with a record of 516-168-46.
