National Chemistry Week Illustrated Poetry Contest

Shaler Area is proud to announce Alexzia Seng, a junior, won 1st place in the National Chemistry Week Illustrated Poetry Contest sponsored by the Pittsburgh Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS). Entries were judged based upon relevance to and incorporation of this year’s theme, “Marvelous Metals,” word choice and imagery, colorful artwork, adherence to poem style, originality and creativity, and overall presentation. Alexzia Seng wrote and illustrated a poem about gadolinium.

Allegheny Valley Honors Band

Shaler Area is proud to announce 31 students were accepted into Allegheny Valley Honors ensembles. More than 500 musicians from nine school districts in the Allegheny Valley auditioned for the Allegheny Valley Honors Band. The musicians spent two days rehearsing with guest conductors during the Allegheny Valley Honors Band Festival, January 9-10, and showcased their talents at the concert performance Jan. 10, at Shaler Area High School. The guest conductor for the Senior High Honors Band was Dr. Stephen Gage (Youngstown State University) and the guest conductor for the Junior High Band was composer/conductor/music educator Chad Heiny.

PMEA District 1 Junior High Band

Shaler Area is proud to announce five Shaler Area middle school and high school students were accepted into the Music Educators Association District 1 Junior High Band. The PMEA Junior High District Band is made up of students in 7th, 8th and 9th grade. These students will rehearse and perform at Montour High School on March 6-7, 2020, with guest conductor William Owens, renowned clinician and composer.

Imagine Learning’s Winter Math-a-Thon

Congratulations to Keelie Calvin, Shaler Area Elementary sixth-grader, who was one of five students across the country to win Imagine Learning’s Winter MATH-a-Thon. Imagine Learning, a company that develops digital language, literacy, and math program for K-12 students, hosted the math competition over winter break to challenge math students to pass four or more math lessons. An Imagine Learning representative presented Keelie with a commemorative Winter MATH-a- Thon certificate and a Fire Tablet on January 10.

SkillsUSA District Competition

Four Shaler Area High School students will represent the school district and A.W. Beattie in the annual SkillsUSA District competition. The competitions will take place at Forbes Road and Parkway West career centers, Pittsburgh Technical College, Rosedale Technical College, Carpenters Training Center, and Local 9 on January 20.

Fairchild Challenge at Phipps: Challenge #2

Shaler Area High School took 2nd place in the Fairchild Challenge at Phipps: Challenge #2, part of a yearlong environmental competition. In Challenge #2, titled “Shade Our Schools – Leaves Are Cool!,” high school students were tasked with collecting data and creating and illustrated field journal documenting their observations on how temperatures impact a plant’s ability to carry out its basic functions. The data collected by Shaler Area students will be added to similar data collected by students from around the world and used by a scientist at the University of Miami who is conducting a series of experiments to understand how leaf size, shape, and color affect leaf temperature.

b. Shaler Area Middle School 8th grade students (approximately 40-45 students) travel to Mt. Vernon – March 13, 2020 – to tour the home of George Washington. Cost per student approximately $65; cost to the district 4 substitute teachers for one day.
