Dear Friends,

We are grateful for the opportunity this Annual Report gives us to reflect on all of the accomplishments of The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh & Lemieux Family Center in Fiscal Year 2014.

The three programs of The Children’s Home continue to thrive and grow in order to provide the highest standard of care to children and families throughout the greater Pittsburgh region and beyond. Every day we are motivated by the courage and determination of the children and families who come through our doors. It is this motivation that keeps us true to our mission: to promote the health and well-being of infants and children through services which establish and strengthen the family.

The founding program, Adoption, continues to serve the community with comprehensive infant placement, search program services, and counseling to all individuals involved in the adoption process, as well as working with older children as an affiliate of the Statewide Adoption and Permanency Network (SWAN). Through all of these services, the Adoption Program served more than 400 peopleWelcome last year, including placingLetter 18 infants with adoptive families. Child’s Way® is in its 16th year of operation and has served 368 children since opening in 1998. As always, Child’s Way is abuzz with activity. This year the children and staff kept busy by enjoying the new playground equipment, winning medals in the Child’s Way Olympics, and serenading the audience at the Holiday pageant. It is a gift to watch each child change and grow to their fullest potential, and we are proud to be able to serve children with this unique program until their 21st birthday.

This year the Pediatric Specialty Hospital celebrated its 30th anniversary. The Pediatric Specialty Hospital remains an unduplicated healthcare service in Western , and as such we have seen a consistent rise in the number of patients being served, with admissions increasing by 50% during the last two years. In its history, the Pediatric Specialty Hospital has served more than 4,600 infants and children.

Without the drive and dedication of The Children’s Home staff, its programs would not be where they are today. Among the many talented and hardworking individuals at The Children’s Home, we are proud to share that two staff members - Erin Colvin, Clinical Director, and Kim Phillips, Chief Financial Officer - were recently recognized with community awards for their dedication and leadership. The Children’s Home applauds Erin and Kim for their achievements, and is proud of each and every staff member for dedicating their talents to improving the lives of infants, children and families in the Pittsburgh region.

We would like to close by recognizing and thanking YOU, our community supporters, advocates, volunteers, and donors. It was because of concerned community members that The Children’s Home was founded as an orphanage more than 120 years ago. It is because of you that we can continue to serve infants, children, and families through the three programs of The Children’s Home today. Maintaining this commitment to the community is a proud part of our history and at the core of our philosophy, but we can only continue to follow this mission with your continued support.

Sincerely Yours,

Pamela R. Schanwald, R.N., M.H.S.A. Julie I. Kline Chief Executive Officer President, Board of Directors

The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh 2013 – 2014 Board of Directors

My twins were born 10 weeks early and needed extended care prior to Julie I. Kline – President coming home. When they were ready for transfer from the NICU at Magee-Womens Hospital, the home-like atmosphere and the personal attention Theresa L. Heck – Vice-President of the nurses and staff at The Children’s Home were such a gift. I had never taken Marvin S. Yu – Secretary care of infants, let alone 3lb. babies with oxygen and other monitoring devices, Alissa A. Meade – Treasurer but they helped my husband, my parents and of course me feel comfortable “ caring for such fragile babies. I was so grateful that after a scary first few months Amy Bass of parenthood, we were able to have such good experiences as a new family at The Children’s Home. We were well prepared to be capable parents when we Eric Boughner left. The Children’s Home is such special place that when I was approached to be David H. With the help and expertise of the Adoption Program staff, Rebecca was reunited with her birthfather and his family. Since this initial reunion in 2012, Rebecca, her adoptive family, and her birthfather’s family have continued to develop their relationships, celebrating holidays and special occasions together, as well as just spending time getting to know each other. Guided by the supportive staff of the “ Adoption Program, Rebecca was able to establish a lifelong connection with her birthfather.

“…We met for the first time at The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh … I will never forget the feeling of him walking through the door and the first hug that lasted about 15 minutes. Neither of us wanted to let go. I finally got to hear bits and pieces of how I came to be… I knew from the beginning this was going to be a great experience.”

Dr. Erika Friehling is a pediatric physician specializing in oncology and hematology who is familiar with The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh both professionally and personally.

In Erika’s words: “As a pediatric specialty physician, I always knew what a wonderful resource The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh & Lemieux “ Family Center was for patients and families. However, as a mother, I got to experience it firsthand. In 2012, my son developed severe epilepsy that required a multitude of medications as well as a specialized diet to help control the seizures. He had many medical needs after his diagnosis so I took an extended leave of absence from work. I was only able to eventually return to work because of Child’s Way. The nurses and caregivers at Child’s Way provided my son with meticulous medical care, in addition to showering him with love and affection all day long! They have an amazing way of encouraging each child’s development and supporting families. I am so grateful for Child’s Way and the remarkable staff and leadership of the organization.”

Jessica and Nate Kaushansky welcomed their first child, Judah, on September 10, 2012. On the next day, Judah was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect called Truncus Arteriosus and was immediately admitted to the Cardiac ICU at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. Judah’s journey has included two open heart surgeries, a tracheostomy, and countless more procedures; Judah’s journey also brought him and his family to the Pediatric Specialty Hospital at The Children’s Home for two separate stays totaling two months.

In Jessica’s words:

“ “Before all this happened, I didn’t even realize that babies could have a tracheostomy, or that G-tubes even existed. My husband and I had a lot to learn. At The Children’s Home, Nate and I handled dozens of trach changes as well as equipment troubleshooting and - most importantly - watching Judah for signs of distress and problems. We had a college-level training course in Judah’s medical care from some of the best nurses I’ve ever met. And those nurses always said, “We’re here when you need us, but we stay out of your way.” It was like being at home, but with a care team right by your side. And the team made it clear that Judah’s care was OUR responsibility and ultimately in OUR hands.

The team at The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh gave our family the strength and courage to handle Judah’s medical needs at our home. The insightful guidance they gave us helped ensure a safe and well-prepared environment for Judah.

There is no other place for medically fragile children and their families to find a home and heal in Pittsburgh. Frankly, I’m quite sure there is no place like The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh in any other city in the U.S. Our family is deeply grateful for the important work done by this organization.” Jessica & Nate’s Story and Testimonial 9 The Children’s Home 2014 Annual” Report
