3 of 71 Dunn DUNN Much of the Dunn family research is available through LDS records – thanks to Dunn Descendant, John Johnson Dunn (1824-1890), whose conversion to the Mormon faith led to the recording of a lot of family information – but at the cost of expulsion from his family, at the time. In addition, records from the National Society Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution provide supporting documentation of Dunn family ancestry. It is commonly stated that the first Dunn ancestor of this research to immigrate to the was Thomas Dunn1 of Yorkshire, England. Thomas voyaged to the U.S., at the age of 14 in 1620 – reportedly mustering as servant to Sir George Yearley and arriving at James City, Virginia in 1624.2 There are a number of family line versions available on the internet based on personal accounts, will records and bible records. Some errors and differences have been noted but it is generally accepted that Thomas had a son William who was born circa 1665 in Virginia. William married Alice Gray and they had 10 children and reportedly settled in the region of Essex/Surry County, Virginia – on land given to him by his father, Thomas. William died in 1752. William’s son, John Dunn (1719-1792), is the forefather of many of the Albemarle Dunn’s that will be included within this text. John united with Anna Marion Martin some time before the December 10, 1759 birth of their son, James. The family is well documented at this point due to James and his brother, Martin Dunn’s recognition as Revolutionary War Patriots and listing in the National Society of Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution. The brother’s report being born in Orange County, VA and moving within a few miles of Charlottesville, Virginia, in Albemarle County, as children. James married Sarah (Dolly) Harvey around 17803. There are at least 10 children recorded for this union; and a number of them have extensive research that can be found on the internet. My wife’s line follows from James and Sarah’s son, John Willis Dunn (1782-1847) of Albemarle County, Virginia. John Willis Dunn had a son, Willis Dunn, and Willis’ daughter, Roberta Alice Dunn Davis was my wife’s great-grandmother. Terry Davis – Dunn researcher, husband of Marge Ramsey Davis.

1 A book titled “Musters of Inhabitants of Virginia” lists a Thomas Dunn as the servant of Sir George Yeardley living in James City, Va. 2 It is commonly reported as fact that Thomas married Ann Burgess around 1639 and she died around the time of birth of their only son William. I found it interesting that there was another servant on board his same ship named Ann Willis – Willis being a name that carried down through many generations of male Dunn’s. 3 There are lots of different marriage dates reported for James and Sarah Harvey – still need proof on this union. 4 of 71 Dunn Dunn Ancestor Trees

James Dunn (1759-1846) Abstract from application to National Society Sons of the American Revolution Submitted by Dr. Samuel Gilmer Dunn, of Lubbock Texas, 27 Nov 1946 and recommend by Nelson L. Dunn

Lineage information provide… American Revolution ancestor, James Dunn of Virginia was born in Orange County, Virginia on 10th of December 1759 and died in Spotsylvania County, VA on the 15th of Jun 1846. James Dunn was a soldier in various units of Virginia during various periods of the American Revolution.

Samuel Gilmer Dunn was born in Cresson, Tarrant County, Texas on 21 December, 1900. (1) Samuel stated he is son of Robert Franklin Dunn born 1855 died 1929 and his wife Mary Lou Spruill born 1860 died 1936. Robert and Mary were married 1884 and came to Texas in 1865. (2) He is grandson of William4 Dunn of Virginia was born 7/9/1825 and died 5/15/1897 and his wife, Martha Shelar was born (left blank) and died 1913. William and Martha married in 1850. (3) He is great-grandson of John Dunn of Virginia born 1782 died 18485 and his second wife, Elizabeth Johnson was born 1790 and died 9/17/1848. John and Elizabeth married 11/11/1822. (4) His is the great-grandson of James Dunn (American Rev. Patriot) who was born 12/10/1759 died 6/15/1846 and his wife was Sarah Harvey born (left blank) died 1848 (no marriage date) (5) He is great-grandson of John Dunn born 1719 died 1812 and his wife, Ann Martin born 1739 died 1812. John and Ann married about 1752.

4 I have seen no other record that shows Willis Dunn as William Dunn – this may be an error by Samuel. 5 This date is in error (along with a lot of other dates in this application). Elizabeth Johnson died in 1884. According to a John Johnson Dunn biography – John visited his mother when she was in her 80’s.

Martin Dunn (1763-1846) Abstract of VIRGINIA REVOLUTIONARY PENSION APPLICATIONS, Volume Thirty-Two, and Abstracted and compiled by John Frederick Dorman, Washington D. C., 1979 DUNN, Martin. R. 3146. 13 Oct. 1845. Louisa Co., Va. Martin Dunn of said county four miles from the Court House, aged 82 last March, declares in Jan. 1781 he was drafted in a militia company for three months and served in the counties in and about Williamsburg under Capt. John Hunton of Albemarle Co., Va., in which county he was born and raised. There were in the company two lieutenants, both of them acquaintances of his. Isaac Davis was first lieutenant and Zachariah Mills second lieutenant, and Joseph Mills was sergeant. Isaac Davis was the father of Capt. Thomas Davis, representative from Orange and Greene counties His company marched to Richmond to protect the people in that section from the enemy then scattered over the adjoining counties. In going to Richmond his company passed through Louisa, Hanover and Henrico counties after remaining a short time they marched below Little York to the Half Way House where they were stationed four weeks. They then marched back to Williamsburg for six weeks. The draft under which the soldiers were raised having expired, they were discharged at Williamsburg and he came home to Albemarle Co., Va., about April 1781. He did not remain home longer than two weeks before he was again drafted in the militia for another tour under Capt. John Henderson of Albemarle County, then living in the southern part of the county. Spencer Norvell was lieutenant. They marched through Louisa, Hanover and Henrico counties to Bottom’s bridge about twenty miles below Richmond, where they were stationed a considerable time awaiting the enemy, he thinks about six weeks. The drafts of privates in Henderson’s company expired there and all hands were discharged. Before reaching Malvern Hill they were stationed a few days at Holt’s Forge where large quantities of iron were manufactured at that day. The soldiers suffered much from want of wholesome victuals. Among his associates were Johnathan Monday of Albemarle, George Beavir, Micheus Carr, Edmund Foster and Anthony Foster; and John Hall of the same county, if alive, can prove his service. He served another tour as substitute for his brother William Dunn, he being weakly and having a family on his hands, under Capt. Harry Burke of Albemarle County. He marched from his native county to Mount Pleasant below Richmond, but after some few weeks his company was marched up to Richmond and stationed there two weeks. From Richmond they marched to Garland Anderson’s Bridge in the eastern part of Louisa County over the Pamunkey River and remained some time. The tour expired and the men were discharged and he returned home to Albemarle County about the middle of Oct 1781. He was born near Barboursville in Orange County in 1763. Albemarle and Orange joined near the point where he was born and his father lived on the Albemarle side He has no record of his age. His father’s children and their ages were kept by him. He believes his brother James Dunn has the Bible. After the war he married Mary or Molly Hughes of Louisa County and took up his residence in Louisa and has lived in his present neighborhood about sixty years. He was over 21 when he married. He frequently saw regular soldiers. They were tall men and appeared to be slim. He did not see a fleshy regular during all the time of his service. During his second tour he saw an Indian warrior and squaw at Holt’s Forge. They wished to join our troops and it was said they were refused admission into the army. He heard the warrior or chief offered 500 of his men to our officers.

7 of 71 Dunn 13 Oct 1845. Louisa Co., Va. Martin Dunn declares in 1832 he directed his son James Dunn to make inquiry whether he was entitled to a pension and was informed the law required service of more than twelve months. Mr. Meade recently informed him his claim was legal. 8 Nov 1845. Albemarle Co., Va. James (X) Dunn, a pensioner, declares Martin Dunn, now of Louisa Co., Va., was also in the war from Albemarle County in 1781. He served two tours in the earlier part of the year and served a third time in place of William Dunn commencing about 1 Aug. 1781. He marched in the company of John Henderson one tour, Capt. John Hunton one tour, and under Capt. Burke of Albemarle his last tour. Witnesses: Benjamin F. Dunn, Jas. W. McMullan. Sworn before Thomas R. Dunn, J. P. 8 Nov. 1845. Albemarle Co., Va. John (X) Hall, a pensioner, declares Martin Dunn served two full tours from Albemarle County in the militia in 1781, and afterward entered another tour but Hall did not serve with him that tour. John Hunton of Albemarle was and Isaac Davis lieutenant the first tour and Capt. Henderson of Albemarle was his first officer the second tour. 13 April 1846. Louisa Co., Va. Martin Dunn of said county, aged 84 in Mar 1847, declares his first captain was John Hunton of Albemarle Co., Va., who lived at the time in a neighborhood known as the “Glebe” near the residence of old Parson Murray. After this tour he (Hunton) was taken prisoner by the British and kept in confinement some considerable time. This capture was made in Charlottesville when a portion of the British under Tarleton had gone. This event occurred toward the last of his second tour in the summer of 1781. While at Malvern Hills during his third tour he again saw his former captain who he understood had been paroled by his captors to return home to see his family. He was riding a bay pony and did not tarry over three minutes, he thinks. He is almost positive his tour began 1 Jan. 1871 as it was a few days after Christmas and was at the time of the burning of the rope work by the British in Richmond. A few days after the burning his company marched out under Hunton and went direct to Richmond. While there he saw cannons spiked which was said to have been done by the British during their invasion. Among the privates with him under Hunton were John Shiflett, Richard Shiflett, James White, John Hall, Johnathan Monday, Laban Rothwell, William Johnston, Mickeus Carr, George Beaver, Thomas Shiflett and others. John Hall still resides in Albemarle County. He believes Hall went home at the end of two months. After service at the Half Way House and Williamsburg the company came up to Richmond and there left their arms an drew provisions and came home. As they went down their arms were gotten at Richmond and on their return the brought a few prisoners, he thinks only two, who were said to be sailors and were left at Richmond for safe keeping. During this tour he associated with another company from Albemarle under Capt. Harriss. Maj. Armstead of Hanover County was attached to the company under Hunton. He knew Capt. Burke before that tour, having mustered as a private under him in Albemarle County. He lived at that time near the mountains in Albemarle County near Brown’s Cove and marched to the lower country the last of April 1781 as substitute for his brother William Dunn. They marched 1 May 1781 through Louisa and Hanover to Mount Pleasant, five miles below Richmond and remained a considerable time, and returned to Richmond and took up quarters at Bacon’s branch (?) where they were stationed a considerable time, and then retreated into the country toward Fredricksburg and retreated as far as Anderson’s Bridge over the Pamunkey River. The enemy were on foot and followed very close. Their vessels then lay at Jamestown, to which they hastened after hearing of the approach of regulars. A great many soldiers were quartered at the Bridge. Among the privates under Capt. Burke were Henry Chester, Thomas Davis, Stephen Murray and Allen

8 of 71 Dunn Crow. Col. Lindsay of Albemarle County was of the division. Joseph Mills was orderly sergeant and Peter Toler was lieutenant. All were raised not far apart. He thinks he returned home about the last day of August. The company met at Richard Woods’ house in the extreme southwest part of the county near the mountains. Spencer Norvell was lieutenant. His tour under Henderson was the second reinforcement in the county and embraced every well man in the county capable to go on duty. A relief company had gone down just before their time and apprehensions of danger were so great reinforcement was called from the county. James Dunn, a pensioner, was under another officer but he saw him daily. Samuel Dalton was also a private with him under Henderson. (There is much repetition in this declaration.) He is under the impression his father’s Bible was bought by his brother James in the division of the estate. 6 Feb. 1786. Louisa Co, Va. Marriage bond: Martin Dunn to Molly Anderson Hughes Security, William Hughes Wit: John Nelson. 28 Dec 1854. Louisa Co., Va. Thomas R. Dunn, a son and one of the heirs of Martin Dunn of said county, gives power of attorney to secure a pension for his services in the Revolution.

10 of 71 Dunn Albert G. B. Dunn Biographical Sketch HISTORY OF TEXAS Supplemented with Biographical Mention of Many Prominent Persons and Families of the State. Chicago The Lewis Publishing Company 1896 (Page 296) G. B. Dunn, a retired physician who is now living near Selden, Texas, where he is successfully engaged in agricultural pursuits, is one of the esteemed and valued citizens of Erath County. He comes of an old Virginian family, the Old Dominion having long been the ancestral home of the Dunn’s. His grandfather, James Dunn received from King James a patent for a tract of land in Virginia. He married a miss Harvey, also a representative of one of the old families of Virginia, and their son James became the father of the Doctor. He married Elizabeth Collins, a native of Virginia and of Irish descent. Our Subject was born in Albemarle County, Virginia in 1837 and spent his childhood days there. His early educational privileges were supplemented by a course in the high school at Standardville and in Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia. Before he was graduated the civil war was inaugurated, and he laid aside his text-books and volunteered for service in the Confederate army. He joined the boys in gray in 1862 and was stationed at Camp Lee where he was assigned to duty in connection with the hospital. It was his experience in this way that probably influenced him to take up the study of medicine. He attended medical lectures at Richmond Virginia and was there equipped for practice. When the war was over Mr. Dunn returned to his old home, where he arrived the night of General Lee’s surrender. For two years he remained in Virginia, and in 1867 removed to Lincoln County, Missouri, where he engaged in the practice of medicine until coming to Texas in 1880. His first location in the Lone Star state was in Grayson County whence the following year he came to Erath County, taking up his abode upon his present farm. He purchased sixty-one acres partially improved land, and with characteristic energy began its further development. He has prospered in his undertakings and as his financial resources have increased has extended the boundaries of his farm until it now comprises six hundred and eighty-five acres, of which one hundred and ten acres is under cultivation. The improvements upon the place are modern in style and in keeping with the progressive spirit of the nineteenth century. His residence is a commodious structure of a pleasing style of architecture, and its furnishings are tasteful and comfortable. The house stands in the midst of a well cultivated farm, which is justly regarded as one of the best in this section of the state. In 1870 was consummated the marriage Dr. Dunn and Miss Virginia A. Gentry., the estimable daughter of Reuben and S. E. Gentry. They have one child, Alva E. In his political views the Doctor is a Democrat, and socially he is an esteemed member of the Odd Fellows lodge in Stephenville. He is a gentleman of pleasing personality and courtly address, and is the possessor of that quiet and inborn dignity which commands attention and respect everywhere. He is a man of broad general information, well versed in the current affairs of the country and being an agreeable conversationalist is regarded as a welcome addition to any circle.

Willie Dunn Harrell Letter Our Dunn family originally came from Surrey County, Virginia. The first of whom we have any record is John Dunn and his wife Patience Burgess, the daughter of Robert Burgess, a native of Surrey who was in Bacon’s Rebellion. In 1690 this John Dunn was a landed proprietor of Surrey Co. We find that on one occasion he was fined for not attending church. John and Patience Burgess Dunn at a son William Dunn from whom we are descended. This William Dunn died, leaving a will probated in Essex County, Virginia in 1731. His wife was a Grey – have forgotten the first name. He had a large family of children, among them our John Dunn who married Ann-, not sure of last name, possibly Martin. John Dunn and Ann came to Albemarle County and established their residence as shown by deeds, before the Revolution. First, John and Ann came from Essex to Orange County and lived there as his son James Dunn states that he was born in Orange (1759) County Virginia and at the age of six years moved to within six miles of Charlottesville, Va., and at the age of thirteen removed within eighteen miles of Charlottesville, Va., and at the age of sixteen was drafted for the Revolution The Dunn’s lived on the original tract until after the death of Elijah Dunn, Thomas Dunn and others in 1900. Donnlora the original home of John Dunn was owned by John B. Moon. It is said that John Dunn moved there because of the continual yearly overflow of the river, and to get away he went further toward the mountains. All of this family showed their original Quaker qualities. They were quiet, intelligent, well educated and peace loving, never meddlesome. Willie Dunn dau. George Dunn George Dunn son Elijah J. Willis Dunn (1825-1897) In Memory of Willis Dunn (By Rev. J. D. Jackson) Know ye not that there is a prince and a great man fallen this day in Israel. Second Samuel iii. 38. Abner, the subject of this text was doubtless a brave, gallant, dashing young soldier, one upon whom King David had fixed the mantle of good opinion and doubtless that he looked down the future with a fond hope that he would soon crown himself with well merited greatness., but alas his career was cut short with the deadly knife in the hand of Joab. It was at the time of the occurrence of this bloody deed that David spake into existence the language of our text. Like David we weep tonight a gloom hangs over our little household like a pall, caused by the death of a great man today in Israel, and that man was Willis Dunn. An humble Christian is the greatest piece of greatness ever wrought by the divine hand of God. The greatness of a quiet, humble Christian cannot be excelled, by sailor, soldier, or statesman. We know where we speak when we place the name of Willis Dunn in the scales of Christian greatness. The subject of this sketch was born in the state of Virginia July 9th, 1825, hence he had advanced his three score and ten when he laid his armor by. The deceased was a proud, highminded old Virginia family, and when peace was crushed out by the heavy tramp of the cruel war, he like a true noble son of Virginia, was among the first to unsheathe his sword in behalf of the sunny south; fought in a number of hard battles under the immortal Gen. Rosser around Richmond. Petersburg, Chancerlesville and Harper’s Ferry; was wounded in the seven day’s fight in the wilderness by a sword in the hand of a federal soldier and was carried to Washington City a prisoner. As a soldier his memory lives among his comrades without a blemish. Bro. Dunn attached himself to the Methodist church about twenty years ago and has lived with the whole armor of God on until the Master bade him come up higher. During the past ten years he has been our nearest neighbor, and as a Christian the confidence we had in him grew stronger and stronger. During that time we have never heard him speak a smutty word, but was at all times pleasant and agreeable. As for honesty, no king that ever set upon his throne had more honor in his bosom than Willis Dunn. He was worth a hundred cents on the dollar, in all of his promises and was as prompt as clock work to pay back anything he would borrow of his neighbors. During these ten years that we have lived within five hundred yards of him we have never heard one of his neighbors speak ought against him or doubt his honesty of Christianity. But, alas, alas, our esteemed friend and neighbor has gone the way of all the earth, he will live in reality with us no more, but his name and kindness toward us will live in our memory as long as we exist. The deceased (unreadable text), which he had several months ago. He leaves a widow and six children to mourn his death. His eldest son, Rev. R. F. Dunn, Methodist minister of state reputation, who is the station preacher at Brackinridge, was at his bed side when he past away, and I voice the sentiment of all my neighbors when I say to the Rev. R. F. Dunn that in his sad bereavement he carries with him back to his home their undivided sympathies. Well might I say, know ye not that there is a prince and a great fallen this day in Israel. His remains were buried (rest of this obit was cut off in our copy.)

Martha (Shelor) Dunn (1833-1914) DUNN—Mrs. Martha J. Dunn (nee Shelor) was born In Green County, Virginia, November 17, 1833. On September 12, 1850, she was married to Willis Dunn. Their marriage was blessed with seven children, six of whom still live. In 1870 she and her family moved to Texas, and in 1874 they settled in Erath County, near Stephenville. In 1896 her husband was called home to heaven, but she was spared for seventeen years longer to lead a sweet Christian life in the presence of her sons and daughters and many friends. In the early part of 1914 she was taken ill; and, after a series of improvements and back-sets, she finally succumbed to the call of death on July 20, 1914, in the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. H. Williams, in Stephenville, Texas. She is survived by four daughters and two sons—Mrs. B. F. Davis, of Oklahoma; Mrs. C. C. Meek, of Arcadia, Texas; Mrs. W. H. Williams, of Stephenville, Texas; Mr. J. A. Dunn, of California, and Rev. R. F. Dunn, of Central Texas Conference. When Sister Dunn was but a young girl she was converted and joined the Methodist Church, and ever after led a devoted Christian life. She was known among her acquaintances as a woman of much prayer. During the Civil War her husband was in the army and she was left alone with three children for the entire four years; but she bore the responsibility bravely and was sustained by dauntless courage and unwavering faith in God. Her entire life was well spent and the world is richer because of her having lived in it. Her pastor, ERNEST L. LLOYD.

Mary Dunn (1888-1972) Miss Mary Dunn, Area Music Pioneer, Dies (Continued from page 1) The city’s population was 4,051 and there were three schools. Daughter of Minister She was one of 10 children of pioneer circuit-riding Methodist minister, the Rev. R. F. and Mrs. Dunn. He was active in the formation of the first Methodist churches in several West Texas towns; he visited the site of present-day Lubbock when the only evidence of the town-to-be was Singer’s store, located about three miles northwest of Miss Dunn’s present- day studio home on 9th St. The Dunn family lived in Tarrant County, in Bosqueville, Tahoka, Crosbyton, Lorenzo and Meridian during Miss Dunn’s early years. Once she was committed to her life’s work as music educator as well as piano teacher, she devoted her untiring efforts in promoting music and setting standards of excellence in the cultural development of West Texas and beyond. Due to great part to her unflagging efforts the State Department of Education granted the whole applied music course of study to their public school program in November, 1939. Charter Music Instructor The first organization of music instructors, the South Plains Music Teachers Association, was organized a year after she took up residence in the city. She was a charter member and was president of the group in 1924-25 and 1925-26. This is now known as the Lubbock Music Teachers Association. She was also a charter member of the Lubbock Music Club. Her leadership in music extended far beyond the local scene, for she was state chairman of the Tri-State Festival in 1932 and in 1936. She became president of the Texas Teachers Association in 1937-1938. One of her special projects was the Student Affiliate ranking for piano students and in June 1935, the State Affiliated Credit for Applied Music was granted. Established Own Studio In 1936 she established her own studio for private piano instruction. From this studio her many students rose to high recognition in musical as well as other fields. One of her contributions to the civic scene in Lubbock was her being instrumental in initiating the Sunday Twilight Music Hour series which enjoyed great popularity. It brought professional as well as student talent to the fore in free afternoon concerts for the public at the West Texas Museum on the Texas Tech campus. Miss Dunn was co-chairman for the Whitlock Theory for the Texas Music Teachers Association in 1965. Her contributions in the form of articles and books dealing with piano, music and theory are recognized on the state and national level. Enhanced Music Here She never yielded in her determination to bring to Lubbock and the South Plains outstanding musicians of national and international caliber for the education of music students as well as the enlightenment of the general public. While she attended sessions at the famed Matthay School in London, England in the 1930’s, she met concert pianist- instructor Miss Marion Keighley Snowden and the outstanding conductor-teacher Dr. Stanley Chapple, who was to become head of opera and orchestra at the University of Washington, Seattle. It was her determination that resulted in many visits for the instruction of master classes as well as performances by the two musicians to Lubbock over a long period.

38 of 71 Dunn Long-Time Leader Down through the years there was hardly any form of music testing, completion, festival or appearance by piano students that Mary Dunn was not chairman or guide in some form. She worked diligently for advancement of music on all levels. As long as her health permitted, she was a constant attendant at musical programs, both amateur and professional, in the city, as well as an enthusiastic patron of all the performing arts. In 1965, Miss Mary Dunn began to reap honors and recognition on the local and state front for her ceaseless pursuit of musical development. She was named “Texas Music Teacher of the Year” in 1965 by the Music Teachers National Association, meeting in Biennial convention in Dallas. Honored By Lubbock On March 30, 1968, Miss Dunn was recognized in her home city with a special day in her honor, “Mary Dunn Day,” by Mayor’s proclamation. The then Mayor W. D. (Dub) Rogers, Jr. referred in his citation to the fact that “Miss Mary Dunn has been the prime mover of music and music education in Lubbock and on the South Plains. Today her influence is felt in all of the activities which promote music. Her contribution to music throughout the length and breadth of this land cannot be adequately measured because her students have reached their heights in many other areas of the United States. The lady’s record of service, tireless and selfless, marks her as a real champion; she is a frontier woman in music.” Confined to her home due to ill health during most of the past year, Miss Mary Dunn made one of her last formal public appearances at the Lubbock Women’s Club where on March 22 last year, she was awarded the Phi Sigma Alpha Assembly annual Jack Sheridan Cultural Achievement Award.

Fern Williams (1894-1907) WILLIAMS—Fern, the 14-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hunter Williams, died in Stephenville, Texas, June 26, 1907 She was a patient sufferer for five weeks. All was done that loving hands and medical skill could do, but all in vain. She was converted early in life and united with the M. E. Church, South, in August, 1902 She was baptized by Bro W J. Hearon. She was a bright Christian, ever ready to work for the Master when called upon. She was in here place every Sunday at Sunday—school, her presence shedding happiness and sunshine upon all around her. Just how much we miss her-God alone knows! The vacancy she has left in her class is indeed a sad one, yet we bow in submission—“Thy will, O Lord, not ours, be done.” At school she stood foremost in her classes; her associates there and many friends feel their loss very keenly. Around the home circle there is the saddest tinge of sorrow; hearts of father and mother all broken, but “weep not as those who have no hope,” look to God above and he alone will comfort you and some day in the sweet beyond you will meet your precious girl, never to part again. Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today In the First Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Paul M. Bumpers, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in City of Lubbock Cemetery under direction of Rix Funeral Directors. The memorial service for the public will be concluded at the church, with private rites for the family at the cemetery. Longtime Area Resident Pallbearers will be Dr. Clifford B. Jones, Owen W. McWhorter, James G. Allen, Retha R. Martin, Ruel C. Martin, Parker F. Prouty and Chas. A. Guy. Honorary pallbearers will be the medical staff at West Texas Hospital and members of the Lubbock Crosby-Garza County Medical Society. Dr. Dunn known nationally in medical circles and active in civic and business affairs, had lived in the West Texas area for half a century, with time out for his higher education. Had Treated Thousands During the more than 40 years since he had chosen Lubbock in which to begin medical practice, Dr. Dunn had treated and performed surgery on countless thousands of patients. He was a stockholder and director of West Texas Hospital and for 10 years its chief surgeon. When he was taken into the American College of Surgeons in 1934, he was the youngest doctor ever taken into the ACS from Texas. He was “tapped” for the Texas Surgical Society in 1934. He was a Rotarian 40 years, a Methodist, former president of West Texas Museum Association, former president of South Plains Scottish Rite Club and Lubbock Country Club, and a member of Phi Chi medical fraternity. He was a director of Sabine Royalty Corp. Became Ill On Trip He was among those active in securing the Peter Hurd mural in West Texas Museum. At the time he became ill last spring, Dr. Dunn was on a trip to the Middle East with his wife and their older daughter and her family, Mr. and Mrs. Ray J. Dickemper and three children. He was on a boat on a trip to a Grecian Island. His illness was diagnosed as diverticulitis at a hospital in Athens. Dr. and Mrs. Dunn returned to the United States by plane and examination was made at Baylor Hospital, where the diagnosis was confirmed. Suspecting malignancy, Dr. Dunn suggested exploratory surgery. When surgery was performed, malignancy was found. After about five weeks at Baylor Hospital, he and Mrs. Dunn returned to their home in Lubbock and stayed a short time and then went to their vacation home in the mountains north of Woodland Park, Colo. Later, they returned in the family home in Lubbock. In addition to his wife, survivors are two daughters, Mrs. William D. Armstrong and Mrs. Dickemper, both of Lubbock; one son, Robert J., a junior in the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston; six grandchildren; and three sisters, Miss Mary Dunn and Mrs. Beulah Turner, both of Lubbock , and Mrs. Lee Quillen, Dallas. 41 of 71 Dunn Born in Tarrant County

The family has requested that memorials in the form of donations may be made in the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, to establish a lectureship on “Medicine and the Humanities” or for cancer research at the medical branch. Samuel Gilmer Dunn was born Dec. 21, 1900 at Cresson, Tarrant County. He was the ninth of 10 children of the Rev. and Mrs. R. F. Dunn. His father was active in formation of the first Methodist churches in several West Texas towns. His father visited Lubbock when the only evidence of the town-to-be was Singer’s Store, located about three miles northwest of present downtown Lubbock. Finished School At Tahoka The family lived progressively in Bosqueville, Morgan, Killeen, and McGregor, where Dr. Dunn started to school. His father was transferred to the Northwest Texas Conference and they lived in Tahoka, then Crosbyton, Lorenzo and Meridian. Dr. Dunn finished high school in Tahoka in 1918, attended Meridian Junior College in 1919 and 1920, did his premedical work at the University of Texas in Austin and was graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He interned at City County Hospital in Fort Worth, finished residency at King’s County Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y. He came to Lubbock Sept. 10, 1926, and began practice as an employee of Dr. Charles J. Wagner. He went “on his own” in 1931. On Jun 28, 1927, he was married to Miss Kara Moore of Matador, whom he had met when living in Matador in his early teens. Mrs. Dunn is a daughter of the late J. Rufus Moore, pioneer Motley County rancher, and the late Mrs. Moore. Worked Long Hours Dr. Dunn first took an active interest in surgery at Matador as he watched Dr. A. C. Traweek, pioneer Motley County physician, perform emergency surgery on a woman who had been gored by a bull. Dr. Dunn recognized “on the run” in his practice. It was not unusual for him to work 12 to 18 hours a day. Although he left himself only limited time for recreation, he like to hunt and fish. He was an enthusiastic football spectator. When in college at Meridian he played football. Had Boundless Energy He collected old guns, arrows and trophies of hunts and kept them at the family home. A fireplace at the home contains old well rock from General Sherman’s home; a part of the old main building from the first fireplace Mrs. Dunn’s parents had constructed in Motley County; and other rocks with history significant to the family. Part of his energy was attributed to his early life. He worked on farms, on a railroad section gang, and in lumber yards before he entered medical school. After his graduation fromTahoka High School he worked on a railroad paint gang several summers. He spent the summer of 1924 working in West Texas Hospital during his study at Galveston and resolved to return to Lubbock for his medical career and permanent home.

Notes for Benjamin Franklin Davis: One of my favorite stories was that Benjamin was a "United States Deputy Marshall!!" I would get a kick out of that every time my Dad would say that. He would say it with such enthusiam and with importance. From what I gather, Benjamin was quite a story teller and loved to talk about his days as a Deputy Marshall. He shot from the hip and was a good aim. One time he took my Dad hunting and they both saw a rabbit and by the time my Dad could get his rifle up to aim, Benjamin had already shot the rabbit from his hip. That amazed my Dad so much that he told that story over and over up into his 80's. Benjamin's daughter, Lelah married George Ramsey, George and Lelah were my Dad's parents. I have a letter that was written by Benjamin to George, they were trying to find out more information on Benjamin's ancestors who came from Wales. Supposedly the Davises from Wales lived in a castle or mansion and were supposed to have inherited a fortion but didn't get to collect it for some reason. This would have been back in about the 1700's. Benjamin wanted to find out about it so he was writing a letter to my Grandfather George with the information that he had about it. I'll type that up and send it to you. I have misplaced my data that a Davis cousin typed up for her relatives back in 1978, she sent a copy to my Dad and we found it at his house when we were cleaning up. That's where we got most of our Davis information and from there, my husband and I

Notes for Gracie Phadelia Davis: 228 so. 10th St. Montebello, Ca. 90640 July 4, 1980

Dear Allison, Anita, and Jim:

We received your Xmas greeting and photo of Allison and must apologize for not having acknowledged them earlier. My middle name should have been Procrastinatlon--originally the initial "P." stood for Phadelia.

I am glad to learn, Jim, that you are working on your family tree. It Just so happens that I was planning to send you the enclosed information on the Davis branch: now I know you will really appreciate having it. The photo of Grandfather Davis (with whom Rovena lived after her mother died) is the only one I have ever seen--some snapshots of him were taken occasionally, but they would only be recognizable by the person who took them. I've been wanting for quite some time to dispose of what few family mementos I have, for I know from experience what a task it is for someone else to get them into appreciative hands later. The little apron was Grandfather's Masonic "uniform" (?) and you will notice under the flap the dates on which he received various degrees - or however you say it. I have a pocket watch that was passed on to my father, which I understand was originally Uncle Sidney's and became Grandfather's when Uncle Sid died. I meant to give it to Gregg when he was here in 1978 but forgot lt.

Now, about the doll, Allison: I call her "Vena," the name we called your daddy's "Grammy". I was told that "Rovena" was a coined name, combining those of her two grandmothers, Roberta and Bervena. I sent this little Vena's sister, Gracie, to Jennifer for her birthday last April; and like Gracie, Vena is wearing a petticoat that I once wore. Yes you will find later, mothers are great for hanging on to their babies' possessions--they're usually a very sentimental breed.) The doll's wig I made and it is slipstitched on, so that if necessary it can be removed and washed; you will find it can be brushed into different styles, but I would not recommend using a comb. I hope you will enjoy playing with Vena for a long time.

It has been nearly two years since Grace Perry wrote us--we've had Just one letter since her visit with us. I phoned them a couple of months ago and she promised to write soon. Could it be this was another letter that got mailed "in the desk drawer"?

I'm sure your trip to Mexico City was interesting and that the five days you spent there were filled with experiences you will long remember. No doubt you found the
