COUNTRY COUSINS VOLUME 1 DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM DAVIS (WELSHPOOL, MONTGOMERYSHIRE, WALES) RELATIVES OF JERALD, LOWELL, AND BOYD DAVIS BY ERA JOSEPHINE MORGAN DAVIS (EDITED BY JERALD MORGAN DAVIS) 1 December 2013 Version 1.0 A MEMORIAL This volume of Country Cousins is dedicated, as all of the many subsequent volumes of the family history will be, as a memorial to Curron David Davis and Era Josephine Morgan (parents of Jerald Morgan Davis, Lowell Kenneth Davis, and Thomas Boyd Davis) for the excellent genes they passed on to their children, the superb values they instilled in us (sometimes forcefully if that was needed), and their dedication to assuring that we were well prepared to face the challenges of life with a constructive, positive, can do attitude that has permitted us to meet the challenges of life and enjoy life with confidence and a smile. These volumes are also a memorial to the lifelong passion of Era Josephine Morgan Davis to discover and preserve our family history and to help others do the same with theirs. We did not get to vote on any of these things before we were born but we are deeply indebted to our parents for who they were, what they stood for, and what they did for us with the limited resources they were dealt in life. It is with love and affection and with deep respect and admiration that we dedicate these volumes of our family history to them. Our parents and all of our extended family of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and close cousins were experts at doing the very best they could with the cards that life dealt them while accepting the things they could not change, changing the things they could, and trying hard to understand the difference between them. They all made us a part of their lives so we could learn how to do the same and do the best we could with the challenges we would face in life with a pragmatic, positive attitude. In the last decade of their lives, Curron and Era Davis frequently spoke (with love, pride, respect, and admiration) of what their sons had accomplished (in spite of their humble beginnings) and how they had lived their lives, faced the challenges thereof, provided for their families, and instilled in their descendants the virtues and skills they needed to live happy, productive, and successful lives. They also spoke of their 2 grandchildren and great-grandcildren with the same love, pride, respect, and admiration. In our parents’ latter years, their guidance to us was to “remember us when we are gone but you must get on with your lives and enjoy them because life is only for the living”. Although that is difficult for anyone to do, we have done our best to do exactly what they wished. 3 PREFACE Since the future is built on the past we need to know as much of our past as we can. The health, longevity, cause of death, physical traits, physical features, and personalities of our ancestors are in part reflected in us, be that good or be that bad. It is up to us to know this so that we can profit from it or cope with it for our betterment and avoid our downfall. The information in this volume was gleaned over many years. It is not compiled for its literary worth or for monetary compensation. It is compiled so that those who come after these may know part of "From Whence They Came". DAVIS FAMILY ORIGIN AND COAT OF ARMS MOTTO; "We tentes, ont perfice" (Do not attempt, or else accomplish) ARMS: Gules a chevron ermine in chief two mounds or, in base a talbot passant of the last. CREST: Two arms enbowed, habited ermine cuffs azure, hands proper supporting a mount, as in the arms. When surnames were adopted during the time of William the Conqueror in 1066, many were derived from baptismal names such as in this case, David. The original family Davis seems to have lived in the north of Wales in the shire of Carmarthen. This family has an ancient history that connects through the marriage of James Conway Davis and Mary Elizabeth Carter and others to the European Royal families in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France and almost all of the other countries in mainland Europe and some in the Holy Land. These ancestors include William “The Conqueror”, Charlemagne “Roman Emperor of the West”, King Malcolm of Scotland (Shakespeare’s play Macbeth), the Plantagenet Kings of England, Robert I of Scotland “Robert The Bruce” featured in the movie Braveheart, and many, many other prominent and famous nobles. The first surname immigrant of this family is John Davis who was born in Gloucester England in 1599 and came with his brother, Captain Thomas Davis, to the Jamestown Colony on the ship “John and Francis” in 1623 shortly after the massacre in 1622 by the Powhatan Indians. His brother was a Captain in the militia at Jamestown which was a high rank in the Colonies militia at that time. Another of his brothers was Captain James Davis who helped found the colony in Maine and settled in Jamestown in 1609. This Davis family connects through marriages to many of the prominent families that were in America in the early 1600’s including the Carter, Cave, Conway, Dale, David, Dean, Fielding, Garvin, Hall, Kempe, Moore, Parsons, Randolph, Rees, Skipwith, and Underwood families. ********************* SOURCES OF INFORMATION ****************** GENERAL REFERENCES: Bible records. NUMBERING SYSTEM USED HEREIN The numbering system used in this document, when understood, shows a person’s ancestors and descendants in number form. For example, person number 2.6.3. has a grandfather who was 2. and a father who was 2.6. and all of his descendants would begin 2.6.3. In other words, his children would be 2.6.3.x. and grandchildren would be 2.6.3.x.y. and great-grandchildren would be 2.6.4.x.y.z. This numbering system permits someone to use the Microsoft Word Search feature to find all of the descendants of a particular person. For example, if you search for person 2.6.3. you will find all of the descendants of that person. 5 ADDITIONS, DELETIONS, AND CORRECTIONS. Based on family tradition and other information, it appears that this line of descent begins with William Davis in 1530 at Welshpool, Montgomeryshire, Wales who moved to Gloucester, England and one of his grandsons immigrated to the Jamestown Colony in 1609 and two others immigrated there in 1623. William Davis was born about 1530 in Welshpool, Montgomeryshire, Wales and died about 1595 in Acton Turville, Whitshire, England. Sir Thomas Davis was born about 1550 in Welshpool, Montgomeryshire, Wales and died 6 Nov 1622 at Jamestown, Elizabeth City County, VA. Sir Thomas Davis was one of the founding members of the Virginia Company of London that founded the Jamestown Colony. John Davis Sr (Queenes Creek) was born in 1599 at Strod, Gloucestershire, England and died 14 Sep 1646 in Marston Parish, Queenes Creek, York County, VA. John Davis Sr immigrated to Jamestown with his brother Captain Thomas Davis in 1623 on the ship John and Francis. Thomas Davis (Queenes Creek) was born in 1638 in Marston Parish, Queenes Creek, York County, VA and died about 1674 [possibly 4 Dec 1672] in York County, VA. John Davis (Stafford County) was born 8 Aug 1663 at Queenes Creek, York County, VA and died about 1698 in Prince William County (previously Stafford County), VA. He married Susannah Mathena [widow of Solomon Day] who was born about 1664 in Charles County, MD and died after 1694 in Prince William County, VA. Susanna Mathena was a daughter of Daniel Mathena and Sarah Wentworth. Daniel Mathnea was the son of William Matheny (a French Huguenot refugee) who descended from Guy de Vaudrey (a knight) who was Seigneur (Lord) de Mathenay in 1180 near Leon, France. Daniel Mathena immigrated to Jamestown around 1663 and settled in Charles County, Maryland before moving to Stafford County, Virginia.
