I thought it was the perfect combination of funny and cringe- worthy. So I picked up one of his early short story compilations How We Are Hungry wanting to know how similar it would be to Hologram. I enjoyed the stories a great deal but didnt find the two to be similar. There are about 13 stores in the book but in truth a few of them are 2-3 pages long so I dont really count those. None of the stories I found to be funny--but many were touching and felt very real to me. My most favorite was The Only Meaning of Oil Wet Water which was a story about two old friends who reunited in Costa Rica for a vacation of fun and eventual sex. The last story in the book where a woman attempts to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro with a travel group was super good as was a shorter story about a man riding a horse on a tour of the sites in Egypt. Overall if you are a short story fan and an Eggers fan I definitely recommend this collection to you. Actually, thousands of other freshmen were also reading books over the summer in preparation for their first days on campus. Many colleges and universities across the nation have instituted First Year and/or Campus reading programs, but why? There are many reasons for having students – and faculty and staff – read a common book. As a new student, you are entering a community of other learners with a variety of life experiences. A common reading program allows incoming students to have at least one thing in common and something to talk about right from move­in day. Reading a common book provides numerous opportunities to connect with, engage in, and contribute to your new community. Common reading programs also set the tone for college academic expectations. College will be work and will demand that you challenge yourself in many ways; participating in a shared reading program is one way to start this academic journey. According to a 2007 report from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), among seventeen­year­olds, the percentage of non­readers has doubled, from nine percent in 1984 to nineteen percent in 2004. The fact is that Americans of most age levels are reading less, which, according to the study, results in lower reading scores and civic, social, and economic implications. The NEA also found that “literary readers are more likely than non­readers to engage in positive civic and individual activities – such as volunteering, attending sports or cultural events, and exercising.” Overall, reading literary fiction and non­fiction, not just the latest issue of People or checking the news on CNN.com, is an important part of being a college student and in being a thoughtful, engaged citizen of your community and your world.

ON SEPTEMBER 6, 2005, IN AN AMERICAN CITY CONVULSING WITH chaos, an American citizen oF Middle-Eastern descent was detained without charge by the U.S. Army, imPrisoned indeFinitely in a make- shiFt jail, and there conFronted by an American soldier who Peered at him through the bars oF his cell and snarled the accusation: “Tali- ban” (223). The name of the prisoner was Abdulrahman Zeitoun, and his cell in that jail was one oF dozens oF demountable iron cages assembled by the Army in the Union Passenger Terminal in down- town New Orleans. At that time, in that Particular SePtember, the city was still engulFed by the Floodwaters oF Hurricane Katrina. Most residents had already been evacuated or had otherwise abandoned their homes and escaPed. OF those who chose to remain behind, some had Further ravaged the city with vandalism and looting so widesPread that the Bush Administration had disPatched the Army to restore the Peace. Yet For those like Abdulrahman Zeitoun, whose ethnicity recognisably matched the ProFile oF the Army‟s des- ignated Foreign enemy, the Price to be Paid For salvation From anar- chy was Punitive Persecution by Army oPeratives indulging in over- zealous authoritarianism. With “no questions [asked], no evidence seized, no charges levelled [against him],” Abdulrahman Zeitoun became “collateral damage in a war that had no discernible Fronts, no real shape, and no rules” (262).
