The filmmakers. It is because of the generosity of these visionary companies Awards are also a chance to take that Film Independent has the resources to assist independent filmmakers stock of where independent film is and to think about where it might throughout the entire year. be headed. As we celebrate our twenty-seventh Spirit Awards, here Sean Mc Manus Josh Welsh are a few observations: PREMIER SPONSORS Independent cinema thrives in tough times. As tough as the economy has been, creatively, this was an outstanding and encouraging year for independent film. Just look at the broad spectrum of nominated films and you’ll witness a staggeringly strong collection of work. As a community, we sometimes get consumed with the business end of things: what sold at festivals, how much a film grossed, which release platform was used and so on. While those metrics are important, today we are celebrating FILM as ART—the storytelling, the craft and the performances that move us as film lovers. Independent cinema is global. While the Spirit Awards has always recognized international films, boundaries feel ever more porous as American independent filmmakers traverse beyond national borders. Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, Michel Hazanavicius’ The Artist, Maryam Keshavarz’s Circumstance, Jarreth Merz’s An African Election and Eric Strauss and Daniele Anastasion’s The Redemption of General Butt Naked are but a few works that demonstrate filmmakers, and their art, are not limited by geography. Independent cinema is new – and old. Film Independent has always been focused on developing and celebrating new talent. First-time PRINCIPAL SPONSORS directors, emerging producers and screenwriters whose work is just being discovered; these are the hallmarks of the Spirit Awards. But, the Spirit Awards also celebrate work from established artists— those in the creative community who choose to tell personal stories and create films that push the boundaries of cinema. While it is true that much of the independent landscape has changed (and will continue to evolve), there is something about the Spirit Awards that does not change—our mission. We celebrate original, provocative films, made with an economy of means and a unique vision. And, we’re back here at the Santa Monica beach, already looking forward to the year ahead and all the films and and filmmakers yet to be discovered. • Wanting, Not Waiting
WINNERSdateline OF THE OVERSEAS PRESS CLUB AWARDS 2011 Wanting, Not Waiting 2012 Another Year of Uprisings SPECIAL EDITION dateline 2012 1 letter from the president ne year ago, at our last OPC Awards gala, paying tribute to two of our most courageous fallen heroes, I hardly imagined that I would be standing in the same position again with the identical burden. While last year, we faced the sad task of recognizing the lives and careers of two Oincomparable photographers, Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros, this year our attention turns to two writers — The New York Times’ Anthony Shadid and Marie Colvin of The Sunday Times of London. While our focus then was on the horrors of Gadhafi’s Libya, it is now the Syria of Bashar al- Assad. All four of these giants of our profession gave their lives in the service of an ideal and a mission that we consider so vital to our way of life — a full, complete and objective understanding of a world that is so all too often contemptuous or ignorant of these values. Theirs are the same talents and accomplishments to which we pay tribute in each of our awards tonight — and that the Overseas Press Club represents every day throughout the year. For our mission, like theirs, does not stop as we file from this room. The OPC has moved resolutely into the digital age but our winners and their skills remain grounded in the most fundamental tenets expressed through words and pictures — unwavering objectivity, unceasing curiosity, vivid story- telling, thought-provoking commentary.
