The Film Independent Spirit IN SUPPORT Awards are a time to celebrate, to see old friends and new and to The sponsors of the Film Independent Spirit Awards provide generous raise a glass to the finest artist- financial support in honor of the innovative work of talented independent driven cinema of the last year. As we celebrate our

twenty-seventh Spirit Awards, here Sean Mc Manus Josh Welsh are a few observations: premier sponsors

Independent cinema thrives in tough times. As tough as the economy has been, creatively, this was an outstanding and encouraging year for independent film. Just look at the broad spectrum of nominated films and you’ll witness a staggeringly strong collection of work. As a community, we sometimes get consumed with the business end of things: what sold at festivals, how much a film grossed, which release platform was used and so on. While those metrics are important, today we are celebrating FILM as ART—the storytelling, the craft and the performances that move us as film lovers. Independent cinema is global. While the Spirit Awards has always recognized international films, boundaries feel ever more porous as American independent filmmakers traverse beyond national borders. Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, Michel Hazanavicius’ The Artist, Maryam Keshavarz’s Circumstance, Jarreth Merz’s An African Election and Eric Strauss and Daniele Anastasion’s The Redemption of General Butt Naked are but a few works that demonstrate filmmakers, and their art, are not limited by geography. Independent cinema is new – and old. Film Independent has always been focused on developing and celebrating new talent. First-time principal sponsors directors, emerging producers and screenwriters whose work is just being discovered; these are the hallmarks of the Spirit Awards. But, the Spirit Awards also celebrate work from established artists— those in the creative community who choose to tell personal stories and create films that push the boundaries of cinema. While it is true that much of the independent landscape has changed (and will continue to evolve), there is something about the Spirit Awards that does not change—our mission. We celebrate original, provocative films, made with an economy of means and a unique vision. And, we’re back here at the Santa Monica beach, already looking forward to the year ahead and all the films and and filmmakers yet to be discovered.

27 Written by Michael Moore IN Memoriam I met Bingham Ray in 1989 at the first screening of my first film, Roger & Me. He became an instant supporter of my work, just as he had become for so many other first time or yet-to-be-known filmmakers. His passing last month has been met with great sadness by many of us in the independent film community. Bingham Ray Bingham Ray was, as wrote, one of the modern independent film movement’s “most heroic figures.” He brought so many of us filmmakers to a much wider audience than we ever thought possible. He distributed Mike Leigh’s great films Life is Sweet and Secrets & Lies, Gus Van Sant’s Drugstore Cowboy, Jane Campion’s first film, Sweetie, and Lars van Trier’s Breaking the Waves. Filmmakers from David Lynch to Robert Altman to Jim Jarmusch all had their films distributed by Bingham Ray. Other films he championed include The Moderns, Prick Up Your Ears, Sid and Nancy, The Last Seduction, The Apostle, Happiness, The War Room, Hotel Rwanda, and so many others. He ran Avenue Pictures, then he co-founded October Films, after which he ran United Artists. But he once told me his favorite job was his first – as projectionist, then programmer, then manager of the legendary art house, the Bleecker Street Cinema. It was there, night after night, projecting Fellini, and Truffaut, and Kurosawa on the screen in Greenwich Village that he fell in love with the movies. In 2002, Bingham picked up and distributed my film when no one else would -- Bowling for Columbine. He devoted nearly a year of his life to this film, and because of his success in making it, at that time, the largest grossing nonfiction film ever, he kicked open the doors so that many other documentaries that followed would receive a serious theatrical release. Bingham was a fighter for the little guy in this indie world, and the list is long of those whose lives were touched by his. He would not be compromised, and his belief in cinema as an art form – and not just another commodity to be bought and sold like a pair of socks – was what made him stick out. In my last conversation with Bingham a few months ago, he was concerned about the house arrest of acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi and wanted to know what he could do to help. He knew Panahi because, well, many years ago he thought Americans should see Iranian films, so he brought Panahi’s The White Balloon to the United States, marking the first time an Iranian film had a nationwide theatrical release here. That’s the kind of guy Bingham was – search out the gems hidden in the dark, and bring them to glorious light. Photo courtesy of Jeff Vespa, WireImage We will all sorely miss Bingham Ray, and we will be the poorer for his absence, but we will never forget him.

Donations in Bingham Ray’s name can be made to the San Francisco Film Society or the Jacob Burns Film Center Education Fund. 28 29 IN Memoriam
