The Middle Jurassic of Western and Northern Europe: Its Subdivisions, Geochronology and Correlations
The Middle Jurassic of western and northern Europe: its subdivisions, geochronology and correlations John H. Callomon The palaeogeographic settings of Denmark and East Greenland during the Middle Jurassic are outlined. They lay in the widespread epicontinental seas that covered much of Europe in the post-Triassic transgression. It was a period of continuing eustatic sea-level rise, with only distant connections to world oceans: to the Pacific, via the narrow Viking Straits between Greenland and Norway and hence the arctic Boreal Sea to the north; and to the subtropical Tethys, via some 1200 km of shelf-seas to the south. The sedimentary history of the region was strongly influenced by two factors: tectonism and climate. Two modes of tectonic movement governed basinal evolution: crustal extension lead- ing to subsidence through rifting, such as in the Viking and Central Grabens of the North Sea; and subcrustal thermal upwelling, leading to domal uplift and the partition of marine basins through emergent physical barriers, as exemplified by the Central North Sea Dome with its associated volcanics. The climatic gradient across the 30º of temperate latitude spanned by the European seas governed biotic diversity and biogeography, finding expression in rock-forming biogenic carbonates that dominate sediments in the south and give way to largely siliciclastic sediments in the north. Geochronology of unrivalled finesse is provided by standard chronostratigraphy based on the biostratigraphy of ammonites. The Middle Jurassic saw the onset of considerable bioprovincial endemisms in these guide-fossils, making it necessary to construct parallel standard zonations for Boreal, Subboreal or NW European and Submediterranean Provinces, of which the NW European zonation provides the primary international standard. -

This methodology tests the assumption that cultures form homogeneous, coherent and discrete social entities by using a practice model to examine how human agents use decorative style in particular social contexts. -

The Evolution of the Jurassic Ammonite Family Cardioceratidae
THE EVOLUTION OF THE JURASSIC AMMONITE FAMILY CARDIOCERATIDAE by J. H. CALLOMON ABSTRACT.The beginnings of the Jurassic ammonite family Cardioceratidae can be traced back rather precisely to the sudden colonization of a largely land-locked Boreal Sea devoid of ammonites by North Pacific Sphaer- oceras (Defonticeras) in the Upper Bajocian. Thereafter the evolution of the family can be followed in great detail up to its equally abrupt extinction at the top of the Lower Kimmeridgian (sensu onglico). Over a hundred successive assemblages have been recognized, spanning some four and a half stages, twenty-eight standard ammonite zones and sixty-two subzones, equivalent on average to time-intervals of perhaps 250,000 years. Material at most levels is sufficiently abundant to delineate intraspecific variability and dimorphism. Both vary with time and can be very large. They point strongly to an important conclusion, that the assemblages found at any one level and place are monospecific. Morphological overlap between successive assemblages then identifies phyletic lineages. Evolution was on the whole gradualistic, with noise, although the principal lineage can be seen to have undergone phylogenetic division at least twice, followed by a major geographic migration of one or both branches. WRIGHT4 Key words: ammonites, biostratigraphy, Boreal zonation, Subboreal zonation, Submediterranean zonation, correlation, Oxfordian/ Kimmeridgian boundary. Abstract. The Mikhalenino section on the Russian Platform has yielded numerous ammonites from the Middle and Upper Oxfordian and lowermost Kimmeridgian, collected bed by bed. The ammonites belong mostly to the Boreal family Cardioceratidae, but also to the Sub- boreal family Aulacostephanidae; additionally at some levels there were collected various Submediterranean ammonites (Perisphinctidae, Oppeliidae and Aspidoceratidae). The co-occurrence of ammonites representative of different faunal provinces makes possible recognition of the Boreal, Subboreal, and partly also Submediterranean standard zonations. In consequence, it is possible to make a close correlation between these zonal schemes. The Oxfordian/Kimmeridgian boundary at the Pseudocordata/Baylei zonal boundary of the Subboreal zonal scheme corresponds precisely to the Rosenkrantzi/Bauhini zonal boundary. This boundary of the stages defined well faunistically in the Flodigarry section (Isle of Skye, Scotland) and proposed as a candidate for the uniform Oxfordian/Kimmeridgian boundary, can be also recognized in the Russian sec- tion studied. The boundary can be traced in the Mikhalenino section using the same criteria as used at Staffin: the appearance of the first representatives of Pictonia [M]–Prorasenia [m] (Subboreal), and the first appearance of Amoeboceras (Plasmatites) (Boreal). This indi- cates the large correlation potential of the boundary defined in this way. The research on the Mikhalenino section has provided the new palaeontological findings described in this study. -
