Suicide in the Music Industry By: Carlee Ayers On January 7, 2019, rapper Elizabeth Eden Harris, who goes by the name of CupcakKe, made a post that shocked many. She wrote,“I am about to commit suicide” on her Instagram page. She reposted this on Twitter and added, “Thank you for everything y’all have done for me I really appreciate it.” Many people were shocked by her post and immediately tried to ask her if she was ok. Many celebrities and people from the Youtube community such as Shane Dawson and Charlie XCX have shown her support and attempted to reach out. While love was being spread to the rapper, there was also a group of people encouraging her to commit suicide and accusing her of faking suicide in order to promote her music. Twitter user Chewiechae posted, “Am I the one faking suicide and triggering thousands so people can buy my music? No” after getting called out for all of her harsh words. CupcakKe’s tweet impacted many people and fans all around the world. A lot of people struggle with depression and suicidal thoughts and when they see someone they know and support struggling as well, they will do what they can to reach out and show them love. Some people made the Suicide Hotline available to CupcakKe and anyone else who needed it. Most people were very shocked and scared about what she posted on her social media. There were little to no updates on the rapper’s condition for hours, so nobody actually knew if she was all right and that scared most of her supporters even more. I asked Adrian Lago their thoughts on CupcakKe’s post and they said, “It made me sad and it concerned me. Even though I don’t know her personally, it still made me feel sad that anyone would feel that way and I hope she gets better soon.” A Youtuber and friend of CupcakKe named Elijah Daniel began texting her team, mother and mutual friends. He got a hold of the Chicago PD, who did a wellness check on the rapper and took her to the hospital. Elijah was one of the first people to give any updates on the rapper’s condition after her post was made stating that she was in the hospital and receiving help. CupcakKe later posted an apology to all of her fans on social media stating, “I’ve been fighting with depression for the longest... sorry that I did it public last night but I’m ok. I went to the hospital & im finally getting the help that I need to get through, be happy, & deliver great music. thanks for all the prayers but please don’t worry bout me.” This of course was a huge relief for her fans who are continuing to show her support through her journey towards recovery. .
