Copyright 2016 Robert Louis Friedman ! ! Abstract This thesis investigates the techniques of Rudyard Kipling and his influence on my “novel of short stories”. How did Kipling advance the short story form over a half-century of experimentation? How did his approaches enliven the reader’s experience to such a degree that his greatest works have remained in print? Beginning in 1888 with Plain Tales From the Hills, Kipling utilized three innovative techniques: the accretion of unrelated stories into the substance of a novel; the use of tales with their fantastical dreamlike appeal (as opposed to standard fictional styles of realism or naturalism) to both salute and satirize characters in adult fiction; and the swift deployment of back story to enhance both the interwoven nature and tale-like feel of the collection. -

The Rees and Carrington Extracts From the diaries of ` Caroline Kipling 1910 1910 Jan. Engelberg. No entries till John leaves for school with Ellen, 26 Jan. Their first week at Engelberg (they left Bateman’s on 30 December 1909) was not much fun: Carrie had been ill at home – it had been a very wet autumn – and remained ill for at least the first week of their stay at Engelberg. Kipling wrote to his mother-in-law describing their tribulations (PINNEY, Letters, Vol. 3, p. 404-5). Ellen was evidently one of the maids at Bateman’s. LYCETT, (p. 404) lists a maid named Ellen among the Bateman’s staff who attended a parish memorial service for King Edward VII later that summer. It must have been quite an adventure for her to travel out to Switzerland at her employer’s expense, and something of a responsibility to take charge of his 12-year-old son to take back to England, though John was quite a seasoned traveller. Jan. The only entry between December 19h 1909 and February 20th 1910 is on Jan. 26 stating that John left for school with Ellen. Letters, however show that the Ks left home for Engelberg on 30 Dec. `09. 16 Feb. (An allusion to the Baldwins – with them.) There’s a further confirmation of the presence of the Baldwins at Engelberg in the letter to John cited immediately below. 26 Feb. To Geneva. Saw Mr . Feb. 26 Leave Engelberg 10 a.m. Arrive Geneva 7.30 p.m. They were on the first leg of a long cross-country journey from Engelberg to Vernet-les-Bains (see below). -

AND HIS CONTEMPORARIES Few authors of note have seen so many and frank judg- ments of their work from the pens of their contemporaries as Stevenson saw. He was a ^persona grata ' with the whole world of letters, and some of his m,ost admiring critics were they of his own craft—poets, novelists, essayists. In the following pages the object in view has been to garner a sheaf of memories and criticisms written—before and after his death—for the most part by eminent contemporaries of the novelist, and interesting, apart from intrinsic worth, by reason of their writers. Mr. Henry James, in his ' Partial Portraits,' devotes a long and brilliant essay to Stevenson. Although written seven years prior to Stevenson's death, and thus before some of the most remarkable productions of his genius had appeared, there is but little in -i^^^ Mr. James's paper which would require modi- fication to-day. Himself the wielder of a literary style more elusive, more tricksy than Stevenson's, it is difficult to take single passages from his paper, the whole galaxy of thought and suggestion being so cleverly meshed about by the dainty frippery of his manner. Mr. James begins by regretting the 'extinction of the pleasant fashion of the literary portrait,' and while deciding that no individual can bring it back, he goes on to say It is sufficient to note, in passing, that if Mr. Stevenson had P 226 STEVENSONIANA presented himself in an age, or in a country, of portraiture, the painters would certainly each have had a turn at him. -

THE WAY THROUGH THE WOODS They shut the road through the woods Seventy years ago. Weather and rain have undone it again, And now you would never know There was once a road through the woods Before they planted the trees. It is underneath the coppice and heath, And the thin anemones. Only the keeper sees That, where the ring-dove broods, And the badgers roll at ease, There was once a road through the woods. Yet, if you enter the woods Of a summer evening late, When the night-air cools on the trout-ringed pools Where the otter whistles his mate, (They fear not men in the woods, Because they see so few.) You will hear the beat of a horse's feet, And the swish of a skirt in the dew, Steadily cantering through The misty solitudes, As though they perfectly knew The old lost road through the woods… But there is no road through the woods. Rudyard Kipling A cigarette card Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay in 1865, but was sent by his parents to England when he was 5, and then to school at the United Services College, Westward Ho!, North Devon, which he famously depicted in the schoolboy tales Stalky & Co. He worked as a journalist in India, and many of his early poems and short stories were published in newspapers or for the Indian Railway Library. He married an American, Carrie Balestier, and lived with her in Vermont for six years, before they returned to England and settled in Bateman’s, a beautiful 17th century house in Sussex.
