2. Cinema Politica Fredericton presents Blood On The Mobile Sept 28

Our screening of the 2010 documentary will be held at 180 St. John St., Fredericton, at 7pm on September 28. Blood on the Mobile is an 82-minute Danish documentary film by director Frank Piasecki Poulsen that examines the current need for rare minerals.

In many places, cell phones are an essential part of daily life. The constant production of new models has never been greater but the production of cell phones for mass consumption has a dark, bloody side. Most of the minerals used to produce cell phones are coming from the mines in the Eastern DR Congo. These so-called conflict minerals finance a civil war that, according to human rights organisations, has been the bloodiest conflict since World War II. This film won the 2011 Cinema for Peace Justice Award (Berlin).

This screening is co-hosted with East and Central African Association for Indigenous Rights (ECAAIR) and we will have the presence of special guest Freddy MweneNgabo, a Congolese human rights activist and refugee who has been living in Canada since 2009.

For the 2012/2013 season, we will be keeping our prices for memberships and admissions the same as last year. Please check out the film line-up on our website: http://www.nbfilmcoop.com/fs.htm

October 1, 7:30pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus WHERE DO WE GO NOW? Director: Nadine Labaki Cast: Claude Baz Moussawbaa, Layla Hakim, Nadine Labaki Run Time: 100 minutes Country: FRANCE/LEBANON/ITALY /EGYPT Year: 2011 Language: Arabic and Russian with English subtitles

A Special Presentation at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival and winner of the Festival’s 2011 Cadillac People’s Choice Award, Where Do We Go Now? is director Nadine Labaki’s charming and heartfelt follow-up to her successful debut feature Caramel, a Film Circuit favourite in 2008.

A rousing musical fable addressing the charged topic of religious differences in the Middle East, Where Do We Go Now? is set in a small Lebanese village isolated from the surrounding world by the hundreds of landmines buried all around it — the morbid legacy of a conflict that has claimed so many lives. When a series of misunderstandings raises tensions between the town’s Muslim and Christian communities, three of the local women — Amal (played by Labaki herself), Takla (Claude Baz Moussawbaa) and Afaf (Layla Hakim) — take it upon themselves to protect their homes from more strife.

To distract the village’s men, who are spoiling for a fight, the three women hatch a series of schemes that boldly defy conventions and taboos — from beguiling the men with a chorus line of Ukrainian showgirls to serving hash cookies at a dance party. But when a skirmish between Christians and Muslims outside the village results in a young man’s accidental death, the already fraught situation is brought to its boiling point and the women realize a more radical tactic is required.
