ARTSnews THE FREDERICTON ARTS ALLIANCE September 27, 2012 Volume 13, Issue 39 Serving the Arts in the Fredericton Region In Memory of Bruno Bobak 1923-2012 The Fredericton Arts Alliance mourns the loss of Bruno Bobak, the legendary Canadian war artist. Our deepest condolences go out to Molly his wife and all the Bobak family. New Brunswick has lost a legendary artist. Bruno was also a teacher, fund-raiser, arts advocate and contributed greatly to the artistic and cultural community in New Brunswick and beyond. He was widely respected for his contribution to art around the world. A book of condolences has been placed at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery for people to sign. The Beaverbrook Art Gallery is home to many of Bobak's works, as well as paintings by his wife Molly Lamb Bobak. Mr. Bobak was Canada's youngest official war artist during the Second World War. He was born in Wawelowska, Poland in 1923, and his family moved to Canada two years later. He began painting as a teenager, studying under Arthur Lismer of the Group of Seven in Toronto. Bobak enlisted in the Canadian Army during the Second World War and was made an official war artist in 1944. He travelled with the 4th Canadian Armoured Division through France and Germany. Bobak moved to Fredericton in 1960, where he remained for the rest of his life, while pursuing an active life as a painter. He had recently contributed to a show at Gallery 78 in April of this year. The Bobaks were named members of the Order of Canada in 1995. We echo the sentiment of many to say that “Mr. Bobak’s passing is a great loss to our community." Bruno will always hold a special place in our hearts. In this issue Upcoming Events 1. FAA High on the Arts Fundraising Gala Sept 27 2. Cinema Politica Fredericton presents Blood On The Mobile Sept 28 Our screening of the 2010 documentary will be held at 180 St. John St., Fredericton, at 7pm on September 28. Blood on the Mobile is an 82-minute Danish documentary film by director Frank Piasecki Poulsen that examines the current need for rare minerals. In many places, cell phones are an essential part of daily life. The constant production of new models has never been greater but the production of cell phones for mass consumption has a dark, bloody side. Most of the minerals used to produce cell phones are coming from the mines in the Eastern DR Congo. These so-called conflict minerals finance a civil war that, according to human rights organisations, has been the bloodiest conflict since World War II. This film won the 2011 Cinema for Peace Justice Award (Berlin). Film trailer and for more information: http://www.cinemapolitica.org/screening/fredericton/blood-mobile This screening is co-hosted with East and Central African Association for Indigenous Rights (ECAAIR) and we will have the presence of special guest Freddy MweneNgabo, a Congolese human rights activist and refugee who has been living in Canada since 2009. All the Cinema Politica documentaries are followed by a discussion about the film and its themes for those who wish to stay.
