    A critical analysis of the effect of copyright infringement on the UK film and cinema industries Stephen R Perrin Submitted in partial fulfilment for the degree LLM by Research School of Law University of Sheffield September 2017 ABSTRACT Film studios and major cinema operators strongly contend that copyright infringement, commonly known as piracy, is costing the worldwide industry many billions of dollars in lost revenue. A number of senior industry figures, as well as other commentators, foresee the industry’s slow death due to illegal consumption. Consequently, for the past two decades the industry has lobbied governments and legislators to provide legislation that restricts illegal online access to their product. During this period, however, the industry has witnessed significant growth in worldwide box office returns, admissions, film production investment and in the number and quality of cinema available for the exhibition of films. These two observations appear to be at odds. Arguing that film, and especially cinemas, provide socio-cultural as well as economic benefits, this thesis critically examines the industry and academic evidence pointing to the quantum of revenue loss, as well as academic evidence examining the effectiveness of the legal measures that the industry has been successful in establishing. The thesis reaches two conclusions. First, the equivocal nature of research findings regarding revenue losses suggests that estimates of infringement revenue effects appear to have been overstated. Second, the effectiveness of legal measures appears to be in doubt, with any positive effects being short-lived. However, it is argued that the equivocality of the evidence does not permit the counterfactual conclusion that the industry is totally unaffected by copyright infringement, or that legal measures are totally ineffective.

Playing out like M*A*S*H meets Orange is the New Black, Talya Lavie's brilliant debut details the power struggles of three women with different agendas and very little to do. Pencil-pushers in the Human Resources Office, best friends Zohar (Dana Ivgy) and Daffi (Nelly Tagar) spend their time playing video games, singing pop songs, jousting with stationery and dreaming of Tel Aviv. The indolent twosome are watched over by their aspiring senior officer, Rama (Shani Klein), who dreams of a higher position and a significant military career, but with a platoon of unskilled, idle, female soldiers without any drive under her charge, her ambitions for promotion are constantly thwarted. With shifts of tone that go from slapstick to satiric to horrifying with fluid ease, and with a superb supporting cast of characters, Zero Motivation is destined to be one of the most talked about films of the year. DIRECTOR’S NOTE During my mandatory military service as a secretary, I dreamed of making an army movie with the pathos and epic proportions of classic war-films, but about the gray, mundane experiences that my office mates and I had, hardly ever getting up from our chairs.

In a rare public appearance Mr. Walsh will attend the 8 pm screening of "Gentleman Jim," his 1942 film in which Errol Flynn portrays the boxing champion James J. Corbett. One of the giants of American filmdom, Walsh has worked in all genres — Westerns, gangster films, war pictures, adventure films, musicals — and with many of Hollywood's greatest stars — Victor McLaglen, Gloria Swanson, Douglas Fair­ banks, Mae West, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Marlene Dietrich and Edward G. Robinson, to name just a few. It is ultimately as a director of action pictures that Walsh is best known and a growing body of critical opinion places him in the front rank with directors like Ford, Hawks, Curtiz and Wellman. Richard Schickel has called him "one of the best action directors...we've ever had" and British film critic Julian Fox has written: "Raoul Walsh, more than any other legendary figure from Hollywood's golden past, has truly lived up to the early cinema's reputation for 'action all the way'...." Walsh's penchant for action is not surprising considering he began his career more than 60 years ago as a stunt-rider in early "westerns" filmed in the New Jersey hills.

After challenging the absolute power of President Vladimir Putin in the name of an open society, his oil company, YUKOS, was seized, followed by a trial that caused international outrage. He remains defiantly imprisoned and is currently being tried on new charges of having stolen a larger sum from YUKOS than its annual gross receipts. Khodorkovsky’s life, the way in which he rose to prominence and the dramatic circumstances of his fall, are a chilling metaphor for the violent political and socioeconomic changes occurring in Russia in the last two decades.
