Barney Casey came from a large family in Oak Grove, Wisconsin. At the age of 21, he entered St. Francis Seminary in —where he found the studies difficult. He left there, and in 1896, joined the Capuchins in , taking the name Solanus.

On July 24, 1904, Solanus was ordained to the priesthood, but because his knowledge of theology was judged to be weak, he was not given permission to hear confessions or to preach. His first 14 years as a priest were spent in , where Father Solanus served at parishes in Manhattan and .

He then went to Detroit, where he was porter and sacristan for 20 years at St. Monastery. Every Wednesday afternoon he conducted well-attended services for the sick. On the average day, over 200 people came to see Father Solanus in the front office for consolation and to receive his blessing. Many people considered him instrumental in cures and other blessings they received.

In failing health, Solanus was transferred in 1946 to the Capuchin novitiate in Huntington, where he lived for ten years until needing to be hospitalized in Detroit. Father Solanus died on July 31, 1957. An estimated 20,000 people passed by his coffin before his burial in St. Bonaventure Church in Detroit.

On November 18, 2017, Father Solanus Casey was declared blessed!

PRAYER FOR THE CANONIZATION OF BLESSED SOLANUS CASEY

O God, I adore You. I give myself to You. May I be the person You want me to be, and may Your will be done in my life today. I thank You for the gifts You gave to Father Solanus. If it is Your Will, bless us with the canonization of Blessed Solanus so that others may imitate and carry on his love for all the poor and suffering of our world. As he joyfully accepted Your divine plans, I ask You, according to Your Will, to hear my prayer for (your intention) through Christ our Lord. Amen.
