THIS WEEK’S JERRY-ATRICS

In last weekend’s bulletin, reference was made to five ‘guideposts’ from Archbishop Vigneron’s pastoral letter Unleash the Gospel. The Archbishop has stated that we are at a pivotal moment in the history of the Archdiocese of . He is exhorting parishes to move beyond a “business as usual” mindset. The five guideposts mentioned last weekend were: 1. Living out our Catholic faith with the vigor of a new Pentecost; 2. Encountering and being in relationship Fr. Jerry Slowinski with Christ; 3. Regularly making use of the Sacrament of Reconciliation/Confession and Pastor Ext. 101 reception of the ; 4. Putting our talents and gifts to use as a means of proclaiming the Gospel; 5. No by-standers, no free passes - all Catholics share the responsibility to unleash the Gospel. Listed below are the five remaining guideposts.

GUIDEPOST 6: PERSON-TO-PERSON ENGAGEMENT It is not enough to wait for people to come to church. We are in a world where many will not cross the threshold of a church or, after a period of time, have stopped coming to church all together. The new evangelization is an invitation to reach out to people, to accompany them on whatever journey of faith they have been on, to be an instrument of healing rather than division, and to use all tools available which are at our means. Younger people, through things such as texting and use of social media, do this so much better than those of the baby-boomer generation (myself included). Every personal encounter, such as a reminder that we are praying for someone, an invitation to come to a faith related event, being a good neighbor – all of these examples are part of a new evangelization.

GUIDEPOST 7: FAMILY Special emphasis in Unleash the Gospel is placed on families – helping them to embrace and grow in the faith. A parish can do this by offering quality Catholic education and formation programs and by providing opportunities for supporting couples in their marriage. In today’s world many families are struggling and wounded. How are we, as a parish, offering families support and welcome? Do we appreciate the tremendous witness given by marriages and families who are perhaps going through troubled and challenging times, yet are relying on their faith in striving to overcome the obstacles and difficulties they are facing? ST. JANE FRANCES de CHANTAL PAGE 3 STERLING HEIGHTS,

GUIDEPOST 8: BEING A JOYFUL (Continued from page 1) Effective witness to Jesus has attractive qualities: exuberance, generous service to the poorand marginalized” (p.26). The sharing of the Gospel cannot be grounded in condemnation and exclusion. If we do not give witness to the joy in being disciples of Christ, why would anyone be interested? How do we exhibit our joy in being called to follow Christ?

GUIDEPOST 9: ENCOUNTER, GROW, WITNESS This guidepost captures the never-ending but ever-deepening cycle that a disciple of Christ must

Fr. Jerry Slowinski embrace. Again and again, we must continue to grow and more intensely appreciate our relationship Pastor with Christ, especially when we are called to confront the hardships of life and embrace the cross. The Ext. 101 maturing of our faith gives us the ability to witness to the Gospel in an authentic way. This is sometimes done by words, but more often than not, by our actions. How does our every activity, as a parish and also as a disciple of Christ, manifest our love and faith in Jesus Christ?

GUIDEPOST 10: CALLING ON THE ADVOCATE The final guidepost reminds us that we need to rely on the support and creativity of the Holy Spirit at all times. The Holy Spirit is oftentimes the most overlooked and least appreciated person of the Trinity. It is the Holy Spirit, who descended uponthe Apostles on Pentecost, which served to inspire and guide the early Church in the work of evangelization. We need to rely on the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, the Advocate, to lead and direct us in unleashing the Gospel in both our personal lives and as a parish.

PRAYER TO UNLEASH THE GOSPEL God our Father, you have called us to be witnesses to Jesus and have commissioned us to lead all people to encounter him. Send your Holy Spirit to enlighten our minds so that your will may be clear to us and that we may accept it.

Dwell within our souls and make our hearts your own. Transform us into a band of joyful missionary dis- ciples embracing the fruits of Synod 16 so as to share the good news of Jesus Christ in Southeastern Michigan through joyful evangelization and service.

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love. Amen.

Saint Anne, pray for us.
