Re lection on Sunday’s Readings
November 19, 2017 The responsibility of talent
First Reading (Prov 31:10-13.19-20.30-31). This is a poem in praise of the ideal wife. Even though it implies that a woman’s place is in the home, nevertheless, it is a noble tribute to womanhood. By today’s standards the woman would hardly be called a talented person. Yet she is held up as a model of someone who uses her talents to live an industrious and virtuous life.
Second Reading (1 Thess 5:1-6). Paul had assured the Thessalonians of the certainty of Christ’s coming. It seems that the community had speculated as to exactly when that would happen. Paul tells them that he himself doesn’t know that. All he can tell them is that it will happen unexpectedly. He impresses on them the need to be always ready lest they be caught unawares.
Gospel (Mt 25:14-30). The parable of the talents is another extract from Ma hew’s Eschatological Sermon (24:1-25:46). Ma hew has accepted that the Parousia would be delayed. Since the day of the Lord’s coming is unknown, he stresses the necessity of being watchful. In the parable of the talents he spells out what this watchfulness consists in: it consists in carrying out the Lord’s instruc ons to the best of one’s God-given ability. The first two servants are congratulated and rewarded for their enterprise and fidelity. Though their responsibility had been unequal, their reward is the same. What ma ers is not accomplishment, but wholehearted commitment. The third servant receives blame and condemna on-because he has done nothing. Instead of blaming himself, the servant blames his master, calling him ‘a hard man’. In the parable we are dealing with man’s response to God’s gi . Ma hew seems to present God as a stern taskmaster. The parable is meant as a warning to the lazy and inac ve disciple to shape up lest he lose everything. The warning is an expression of love and concern. Catholic News Service: Venerable Solanus Casey, an American -born Capuchin priest who died in 1957, will be bea fied at a Nov. 18 Mass in Detroit. Who was Fr. Solanus Casey? Known for his great faith, a en on to the sick, and ability as a spiritual counselor, he will be the second American-born male to be bea fied. Born Bernard Casey on Nov. 25, 1870, he was the sixth child of 16 born to Irish immigrants in Wisconsin. At age 17 he le home to work at various jobs, including as a lumberjack, a A Filipino Advent hospital orderly, and a prison guard. Re-evalua ng his life a er witnessing a drunken sailor Tradition brutally stab a woman to death, he decided to act on a call he felt to enter the priesthood. Because of his lack of formal educa on, however, he struggled in the minor seminary, and was eventually encouraged to become a priest through a Saturday, religious order rather than through the diocese. So in 1898, he joined the Capuchin Franciscans in Detroit th and a er struggling through his studies, in 1904 was ordained December 16 a “sacerdos simplex” – a priest who can say Mass, but not publicly preach or hear confessions.
