You have been with me every step of the way, and I and this dissertation are better for it. iv ABSTRACT “Of Wilderness, Forest, and Garden: An Eco-Theory of Genre in Middle English Literature” proposes a new theory of genre that considers the material elements of the natural environment in Middle English literature composed between 1300-1450 CE. Instead of treating the setting as just a backdrop for human activity, I posit that the components of the environment play a role in the deployment of the narrative by shaping the characters and influencing the action. More than an acknowledgement of the particular natural features, this study explores the role that these components play and how they give us a deeper understanding of the text. This project presents a view of the text that both engages and augments the traditional genre classification, offering a way to study a lesser considered subject in medieval literature—the material world of the setting—by reassessing the genre classification of the texts. By teasing out the material details of the setting, an eco-theory of genre cuts across conventional genres and offers another way to connect medieval texts. I argue that, instead of romance, Breton Lai, ballad, and fabliau, the texts examined in this dissertation are wilderness, forest, or garden poems. The eco-theory of the genre wilderness sees the adversarial elements in an untamed environment. The forest genre is a space of rules and regulations that circumscribe the environment and, in turn, manage the resources found there. The genre of the garden focuses on the conflict between what is manmade and what is natural and considers which of these is more real. When he finds it, he triggers a storm that rivals any he has ever seen: The weder wex than wonder-blak, And the thoner fast gan crak. Thare come slike stormes of hayl and rayn, Unnethes I might stand thare ogayn; The store windes blew ful lowd, So kene come never are of clowd. I was drevyn with snaw and slete, Unnethes I might stand on my fete. In my face the levening smate, I wend have brent, so was it hate, That weder made me so will of rede, I hopid sone to have my dede; And sertes, if it lang had last, I hope I had never thethin past. (369-82) All of the phenomena that Colgrevance lists are naturally occurring: rain, sleet, snow, thunder, and lightning, and anyone who has been caught out in the open during a severe thunderstorm recognizes the drama Colgrevance describes. A conventional critique of this episode as part of a medieval romance poem considers how Colgrevance exposes his vulnerability to the elements of very foul weather to see if he can survive and therefore affirm his identity as a knight in that survival. 1 This dissertation project proposes a new theory of genre that considers the material elements of the natural environment in Middle English literature composed from 1300-1450 CE.     Te Bulletin of the International Association for Robin Hood Studies Volume 1, Issue 1 2017 ROBIN HOOD AND THE FOREST LAWS Stephen Knight The University of Melbourne The routine opening for a Robin Hood film or novel shows a peasant being harassed for breaking the forest laws by the brutal, and usually Norman, authorities. Robin, noble in both social and behavioral senses, protects the peasant, and offends the authorities. So the hero takes to the forest with the faithful peasant for a life of manly companionship and liberal resistance, at least until King Richard returns and reinstates Robin for his loyalty to true values, social and royal, which are somehow congruent with his forest freedom. The story makes us moderns feel those values are age-old. But this is not the case. The modern default opening is not part of the early tradition. Its source appears to be the very well-known and influential Robin Hood and his Merry Men by Henry Gilbert (1912). The apparent lack of interest in the forest laws theme in the early ballads might simply be taken as reality: Barbara A. Hanawalt sees a strong fit between the early Robin Hood poems and contemporary outlaw actuality. Her detailed analysis of what outlaws actually did against the law indicates that robbery and assault were normal and that breach of the forest laws was never an issue.1 The forest laws themselves are certainly medieval.2 They were famously imposed by the Norman kings, they harassed ordinary people, stopping them using the forests for their animals and as a source for food and timber, and Sherwood was one of the most aggressively policed forests—but this did not cross into the early Robin Hood materials.

    Trust, Relationships & Friendly Feelings in Thomas Chestre’s Sir Launfal1 Deborah Seiler University of Western Australia The fourteenth century Breton lai Sir Launfal, written by Thomas Chestre, has been approached from several different direction: honour, gender, knightly ideals, just to name a few; trust, however, has not yet been employed to look at the lai. As a category of historical analysis, trust is very promising, as it is inherent in all human relationships. In Sir Launfal, Chestre uses trust – expressed through wealth and the lack of it – to highlight Launfal’s inherent worth. By formulating a context-based definition of trust, and then applying it to the text of Sir Launfal, this article shows that trust can be a useful category for historical analysis. In the context of society, there is perhaps nothing as necessary as trust. It is, as the Russian historian George Hosking has noted, ‘one of the most pervasive – and perhaps for that reason least noticed – aspects of social life.’ In order to live, he states, we need to display trust.2 Once one starts focusing on trust as a category of historical analysis, it becomes clear how integral it is to everyday life: nearly every action and reaction is based on some form of trust. This is seen both in personal relationships, where trust is established over a period of time, as emotional boundaries are removed or shifted, and in public relationships that are based on social assumptions, as when a person’s clothing indicates a social status that comes with a level of trustworthiness. Literature in particular can reveal a great deal about how trust has been viewed historically, since it allows for an expression of ideology relatively unrestrained by the strictures – moral, literal, social, physical – of reality.

    EC 24/10/2013 Chapter Two The Limits of Translation in the Writing of Marie de France Like some of the authors mentioned in the previous chapter, the writer known today as ‘Marie de France’ ranks among a not inconsiderable number of women writing in Anglo-Norman England in the late twelfth century.1 It is by no means to be taken for granted that the same author composed all of the works conventionally attributed to Marie, though there are certainly some interesting similarities in the way this signature is associated with posterity and memory in different texts.2 Though I will for the sake of convenience retain this authorial designation in the present chapter and will examine together texts identified with ‘Marie’, I shall also emphasize the extent to which some of the concerns with remembrance and written posterity often associated with Marie de France’s work are shared with contemporary writers working in the French of England. I will also tease out differences as well as similarities between the attitudes to translation in different works associated with Marie. As I will suggest, there is, I think, a case to be made for seeing certain elements of the engagement with translation and memory in works attributed to Marie as distinctive, but this does not amount to a single attitude to translation and the distinctiveness of the approaches taken in these texts comes into better perspective when considered as part of the wider literary context in which they were produced. Attributed to Marie are several French works, all of which make some reference to translation: the Lais (which claim to derive from oral Breton stories), the Fables (translated from Latin, or possibly from a lost Anglo-Saxon text) and the Espurgatoire (a translation of an identifiable Latin source).

    A REVIEW OF THE YEAR’S PUBLICATIONS IN ROBIN HOOD SCHOLARSHIP Mikee Delony Abilene Christian University Peer-reviewed Robin Hood scholarship published in 2015 includes two single-author books, two edited book chapters, and eight journal articles. These publications examine specific texts from the matter of Robin Hood, providing new approaches to familiar texts and further exploration of less-familiar materials. Many scholars also comment on the tradition’s capacity for seemingly endless adaptation and highlight the similar ideological and political threads woven through the materials. Shining an academic light upon five centuries of Robin Hood texts that celebrate political resistance and public activism against oppression takes on new importance in light of contemporary global resistance to government overreach and systemic oppression. Since Robin Hood scholarship also tends to resist categorization, I have loosely grouped these reviews by literary chronology and genre. GENERAL STUDIES In Reading Robin Hood: Content, Form, and Reception in the Outlaw Myth,1 Stephen Knight revisits the Robin Hood literary tradition from his position as one of the early pioneers in the field of Robin Hood studies. In his survey, which ranges from medieval oral ballads to twenty- first film and television adaptations, Knight notes the multivalent, “unhierarchial, nonlinear” (10) nature of the tradition and suggests that Deleuze and Guattari’s rhizomatic “model of multiplicity” (234) might best describe the “various, porous, [and] richly labile” legend (10). Writing that the Robin Hood tradition “renews itself in turns of current political forces and media of dissemination and consistently has as scant a respect for literary and formalistic authority as it has for social and legal forces of order” (253), Knight celebrates the characteristics that prevent the tradition from achieving canonical status at the same time they have remained relevant for centuries.

These primordial substances, which make possible all life on earth, are the subject of Hiroshi Sugimoto’s Seascapes series. For over thirty years, Sugimoto has traveled the world photograph- ing its seas, producing a body of work that is an extended medita- tion on the passage of time and the natural history of the earth. Sugimoto has called photography the “fossilization of time,” and the Seascapes photographs simultaneously capture a discrete mo- ment in time but also evoke a feeling of timelessness. This volume, the second in a series of books on Sugimoto’s art, presents the com- plete series of over 200 Seascapes, some of which have never before been reproduced. All are identical in format, with the horizon line precisely bifurcating each image, though at times the sea and sky almost merge into one seamless unit. Each photograph captures a moment when the sea is placid, almost flat. Within this strict format, however, he has created a limitless array of portraits of his subjects. An essay by Munesuke Mita, Professor of Sociology at the University of Tokyo, examines contemporary art through a socio- logical lens, comparing the recent history of art with mathematical predictions of population growth.
