Citation An extract from "The London Gazette," No.31012, dated 15th Nov., 1918, records the following: "For most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty. When the right flank of his company was held up by a nest of enemy machine guns, he, with great courage and initiative, rushed forward under heavy fire with his Lewis gun and engaged the position single-handed, capturing two machine guns and twelve prisoners and killing one officer and two men. Later in the day he again rushed another enemy machine-gun position, capturing the gun under heavy fire. He was killed immediately after. His courage and dash were beyond all praise, and it was entirely due to the very gallant conduct of Lce. Cpl. Seaman that his company was enabled to push forward to its objective and capture many prisoners."     !1 remembrance ni Unique memorial to 36th Ulster Division In Belfast Cathedral there is a unique war memorial to the 36th (Ulster) Division. It is a lectern which was presented by the Division O"cers’ Old Comrades’ Association. The war memorial lectern was dedicated on 10/11/1929, the same remembrance ni Issue 19 !2 weekend as the opening of the Cenotaph in the City Hall’s Garden of Remembrance. # The Cathedral was packed. The Queen’s Island Band, under George Dean, late of the, Norfolk Regiment, took part in the Service. The Dedication was performed by Bishop Grierson at the request of Col H A Packenham, CMG, on behalf of the donors. # The lectern contains Ireland’s Memorial Records, 1914-1918, in eight volumes which record the names of more than 49,000 Irishmen. The Records and the bronze statuette which surmounts the lectern were the gift of the Irish National War Memorial Committee. # The statuette is the work of Morris Harding and was designed by the architect of the Cathedral Sir Charles Nicholson, and for whom Maurice Harding had carried out many of the sculptured elements in the building. A contemporary Belfast Telegraph photograph of the lectern shows it covered in poppies. # In his sermon Revd A A Luce, MC, DD, who had served as a Captain, 12 Batt, RIR, pointed out that abstainers in the Ulster Division stuck to their principles, even refusing their rum ration in the front-line trenches! # remembrance ni Issue 19 !3 Arthur Aston Luce.     Victoria Cross in België Het Victoria Cross is de hoogste Britse militaire onderscheiding.Het kruis kan worden toegekend voor "most conspicuous bravery, or some daring or pre-eminent act of valour or self-sacrifice, or extreme devotion to duty in the presence of the enemy" ,vrij vertaald door "zeer bijzondere dapperheid, of bijzondere daad van moed of opoffering of extreme plichtsbetrachting in de aanwezigheid van de vijand". Er wordt geschat dat slechts ongeveer 1 op de 10 heldendaden die voor het VC in aanmerking zouden komen, door de betrokkene wordt overleefd. Een laureaat mag de letters 'VC' achter zijn naam zetten. De medaille is een bronskleurig kruis met in het midden een gekroonde leeuw boven een Britse koninklijke kroon. Het motto is "For Valour" (Engels: Voor heldhaftigheid). Het lint is wijnrood. De onderscheiding werd na de Krimoorlog in 1856 ingesteld door koningin Victoria en is sindsdien 1355 maal uitgereikt, waarvan slechts 16 maal sinds de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Drie mensen kregen het Victoria Cross tweemaal toegekend. Dit waren de twee Britse artsen Noel Chavasse en Arthur Martin-Leake die hun tweede kruis postuum toegekend kregen voor het redden van gewonden onder vijandelijk vuur. De Nieuw-Zeelander Charles Upham kreeg zijn twee kruisen voor gevechtsacties en heeft deze ook beide keren overleefd. Een andere arts, William Manley, is de enige man die zowel het Victoria Cross als het IJzeren Kruis kruis toegekend kreeg. Het Victoria Cross kreeg hij tijdens de Maorioorlog in Nieuw-Zeeland en het IJzeren Kruis tijdens de Frans-Duitse Oorlog van 1870–71.     Great War in the Villages Project In early April 2014, some months after we published this article about Ernest, Fred was contacted on behalf of Scole Parish Council who wanted to name a street after Ernest. You can find out what happened by returning to the “Memories Passed Down” page and following the link to “Ernest Seaman VC” Ernest Seaman V.C. Dene Valley U3A member Fred Turner who lives in Wellesbourne writes, “I was brought up in Norfolk, and my mother often spoke about "Uncle Ernie" . She lived as a young girl in the village of Scole in Norfolk, where Uncle Ernie had lived.” Fred did some research and found the following report about his uncle on Wikipedia Ernest Seaman VC MM (16 August 1893 – 29 September 1918) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Ernie was born in a small village near Norwich, then while he was still a young boy his mother remarried and his family moved to Scole. On leaving school he worked for a while as a page boy in the Grand Hotel in Felixstowe. He had a few other jobs before signing up to go and fight for his country. Classified as unfit for active front line service he ended up as a baker in the Army Service Corps of the British Army. It was not until late in the war that he was allowed to join a front-line unit.
