LA FOCALISATION DANS LA RUE CASES NEGRES : UNE ANALYSE DU ROMAN DE JOSEPH ZOBEL ET DU FILM D’EUZHAN PALCY by KERRI ELIZABETH MCCOY (Under the Direction of Doris Kadish) ABSTRACT This thesis treats the social problems of Martinique in the 1930s. In this work, I will analyze the novel La rue Cases-Nègres by Joseph Zobel and the film adaptation by Euzhan Palcy, with the theory of focalization, in four chapters. I will study focalization, a theory that treats the problem of who sees ? in a texte, as opposed to who speaks?, which is a problem of narration. By the internal and unique focalization of a young Martinican in these two works, we will see the social hierarchy that was present between blacks, mulattos and whites during this time period, as a result of French slavery and colonialization. In Zobel’s novel and Palcy’s film, we will see the struggles that the people of Martinique experience in a country that is influenced by a mixture of African, Creole and French cultures. We will also see hope for improvement through the eyes of José, the internal and only focalizer in the two media. Pan-Africanism and the Black Festivals of Arts and Culture: Today’S Realities and Expectations

D) & Michael Olusegun Fajuyigbe (M. Phil) Department of Fine and Applied Arts, Obáfémi Awólówò University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria . Abstract: The first two editions of the Festivals of Blacks arts and culture which owed much to the ideologies of the Pan-Africanism and Negritude that preceded them, no doubt laid legacies that have continued to serve as strong reference points in the discussion of Africans and African descent relationship. Apart from providing an unusual forum that brought to light the diverse contributions of Blacks and African peoples to the universal currents of thought and arts, both editions drew attentions to the expected relationship between the continental Africans and their offspring in the Diaspora. The events reassert the African identity thus creating the platform for continental Africa and the Diaspora to move through the borders of nation state and the psychosocial borders of racism which is central to all Pan-Africanist freedom movements. It is however worrisome that forty eight years after the maiden edition of the festival (FESMAN) and thirty seven years after the second (FESTAC), the achieved cultural integration is yet to translate into much expected economical, political, educational, philosophical and technological advancements of African nations and that of the Diaspora. This paper therefore attempts a review of the Black Festivals of Arts with a view to highlighting how the achieved cultural integration through the arts could be further explored for today’s realities and expectations. -

And how many reviewers balked at (while others kindly acquiesced to) the new practice of many publishers sending out review copies exclusively in digital form? When Négritude Was In Vogue: Critical Reflections of the First World Festival of Negro Arts and Culture in 1966 by Anthony J. Ratcliff, Ph.D. [email protected] Assistant Professor, Department of Pan African Studies California State University, Northridge Abstract Six years after assuming the presidency of a newly independent Senegal, Leopold Sédar Senghor, with the support of UNESCO, convened the First World Festival of Negro Arts and Culture in Dakar held from April 1-24, 1966. The Dakar Festival was Senghor’s attempt to highlight the development of his country and “his” philosophy, Négritude. Margaret Danner, a Afro-North American poet from Chicago and attendee of the Festival referred to him as “a modern African artist, as host; / a word sculpturer (sic), strong enough to amass / the vast amount of exaltation needed to tow his followers through / the Senegalese sands, toward their modern rivers and figures of gold.” For Danner and many other Black cultural workers in North America, the prospects of attending an international festival on the African continent intimated that cultural unity among Africans and Afro-descendants was rife with possibility. What is more, for a brief historical juncture, Senghor and his affiliates were able to posit Négritude as a viable philosophical model in which to realize this unity. However, upon critical reflection, a number of the Black cultural workers who initially championed the Dakar Festival came to express consternation at the behind the scenes machinations which severely weakened the “lovely dream” of “Pan-Africa.” 167 The Journal of Pan African Studies, vo.6, no.7, February 2014 Following Senegal’s independence from France in 1960, the poet-statesman Leopold Sédar Senghor became the county’s first African president. -

One of the first Caribbean books I read was Joseph Zobel’s Et si la mer n’était pas bleue, his 1982 collection of short stories. It was taught in a first-year French literature class, and was chosen, I think, because it was a relatively “light” read, accessible to students at that level, and yet with enough substance to warrant serious critical study. There were stories of childhood, of the Nardal sisters in Paris, of a narrator figure relocated from Martinique to Senegal. There was certainly a lightness of touch, but one sensed also a seriousness, one wrought from experience, and that the apparent lightness was a means of distilling that experience, its frustrations, disappointments, its bitterness, even. In short, the book signaled that reading Caribbean literature was not a simple affair, that it would be an error to mistake surface sweetness or lightness for an absence of real, hard-won wisdom and insight, much as one should not take the sweet melodies of Caribbean music as signs of carefree living or an easy relationship with history. I saw the film of La Rue Cases-Nègres before I read the novel. Somewhat against the way that the short story collection was taught, the general feeling among scholars toward the novel and film was that it was light, lacking the critical weight or the stylistic innovation of the prominent Francophone Caribbean authors of the time—Glissant, the créolistes, or even Césaire, who was a contemporary of Zobel, and whose more impenetrable, more difficult work arguably overshadowed Zobel’s. -
