In the modern world, where violence is gaining ground, and the quiet ones are cruelly trampled upon, we had long felt the need to male known the presence of Negro men of culture. The number, quality and variety of talents should be the first assertion to the world of our presence. The preparatory work for this Congress, which was planned eighteen months in advance, was difficult, and sometimes even des- perate. It was our faith that saved us. Obviously, we were bound to suffer from the modesty of our resources. There were not many of us to make the Congress arran- gements. The limited possibilities of an overworked Secretariat compelled us to throw the programme into some degree of confusion. Thus, some Papers which should have been presented on the First Day (Taking Stock) had to be adjourned until later, and the third and last Part (Future Prospects) was, for lack of time, not followed by discussion. Finally, and this is most important, about thirty Papers were not presented ; it was impossible to find time for everyone . They are being published in a second Volume . We are very happy to realize that our expectations were exceeded, and that our appeal found an echo from various sources, which were more numerous than we expected . But we have been more than consoled for our regrettable short- comings (in the face of heavy and unpredictable tasks) by the fervent attention with which the public (and especially African Youth) has followed our proceedings. During those days at the Sorbonne we went through some exhilarating hours of fervour and enthusiasm - and, in spite of the diversity of our origins, backgrounds and convictions, the unanimity which emerged had nothing artificial about it. This Congress was a great event in the conscience of the world. The Congress was welcomed with very lively interest by the Press in France, from the progressive and atheistic organs, to the Christian papers of every shade. Outside France, in the U.S.A., in the French-speaking Antilles and the English-speaking West Indies, in Brazil, in Nigeria and the Gold Coast, in the Arab coun- 4 PRESENCE AFRICAINE tries, and as far as South Africa (as well as the countries of Central Europe and Asia), the Press, the Radio and the Cinema News reels commented at length, and are still commenting on the event. In Number i i of this Review, we shall return in detail to the reactions of the World Press. We may say, on the whole, that we are not greatly embarrassed by the few criticisms which have been levelled . The texts which are published here are sufficient answer to them. We may, however, perhaps be permitted to revert to the justi- fication for our preoccupation with culture. Every people in every age has known some form of culture. The men who, tens of millions of years ago, decorated the walls of their caves with frescoes, which are still astonishing in their freshness, already had their culture, because it is the very nature of man to be cultured (i) . To man (who thinks) the call to culture is rather what instinct is to the bee (who perhaps does not think) . But culture has not always had such a wide and precise meaning as it has to-day; it has not been imposed with so much rigour in the life of society. Culture is no longer a distinctive decoration reserved for them- selves by a handful of elect, nor an activity for the luxurious alone . This is because modern culture has acquired a number of dimensions and has accentuated its old ones. It is more widely diffused than ever, thanks to rapid printing, automatic reproduction, radio and television, the cinema, and increas- ingly speedy means of communication. All social strata now share not only in acquiring the products of culture, but also, directly or indirectly, in cultural creation itself. It may be said that the under-developed countries are manifestly beginning to take part. Individualistic culture, particularly that form whose object was to glorify the individual singularity of an exceptional case, is yielding place, little by little, to culture inspired by society. Under the pressure of events creative artists are coming down from their ivory tower and giving thems°lees up to social problems. To-day, whether they are believers or unbelievers, they are all more or less " committed " The result is that they are not indifferent either to alien cultures or to the achievements ofscience or to political options. That means that we are tending towards the totalisation of cultural consciousness. However paradoxical it may seem, the (i) A study should one day be made, from the point of view of the ethnogra- pher, the sociologist and the historian, of those abnormal beings, peculiar to the {'civilised" world, who are called uncultured . They are beings who have been wrongfully deprived of the means of communicating with those who surround them in their own community. MODERN CULTURE AND OUR DESTINY 5 acquisition of traditional knowledge is sometimes less important than the creation (or the action, or the work) which answers to some of the current problems of mankind. It appears in effect that the extent of these problems (upon which the consciousness of the people is nou- rished) is beyond the range of traditional Western ideas and values . These ideas and values, far from being renounced, will be widened, strengthened and supplemented by the aspirations, anguish and passions of the new social strata and the new peoples . But what si common to the conscience of all mankind is the feeling that certain problems are gravely urgent and dangerously interdependent . Thus, atomic power lays an unimagined new emphasis upon questions of social justice, national sovereignty and international concord . In this way, whatever may be the level of our modern equip- ment, we are still concerned with world culture . In effect, culture becomes a formidable instrument of political action at the very moment when it has the ambition and the vocation to inspire policy. Culture in the service of ordinary politics is not a new pheno- menon. Politicians have always made use of culture as well as spirituality to find a foundation and a buttress for their authority . Princes and emperors have everywhere made certain of the fidelity, if not the docility, of the masters of their times. In our own times we know the importance of doctrine and system to the political parties. Every government, moreover, has a cultural policy which determines the trend of education as well as of the arts . According to the values selected, the destiny of under-developed peoples is . oriented in one direction or the other without any need to consult them. We are therefore under the duty to pay attention to all cultural production, to assess its trends and its possible effects, and to react accordingly . But creative culture rejects any subordination and is determined to discharge to the full its own responsibilities, of which the main one is to maintain freedom ofexpression . We know from experience that there is no authority which can permanently confine the cultural vitality of a people within the limits of a specific law. It is enough for men of culture to be vigilant for their own liberty.

Goldenberg In 1604 Fray Prudencio de Sandoval had this to say about the Jew and the Black: Who can deny that in the descendants of the Jews there persists and endures the evil inclination of their ancient ingratitude and lack of understanding, just as in the Negroes [there persists] the inseparable quality of their blackness. 1 His linking of Jew and Black was not unusual. Indeed, the explicit and implicit comparison of these two peoples is found throughout western literature over many centuries. Leslie Fiedler may have been right when he said, “Surely the Negro cannot relish...this improbable and unwanted yoking any more than the Jew.” Nevertheless, yoked they are, at least in the minds of the rest of the world. At various times and in various places, both peoples were said to be genetically diseased, physically and intellectually inferior, cursed by God, oversexed, more animal than human, ugly, smelly, and, of course, associated with the devil. From Jerome and Augustine, who saw biblical Ham as typologically the Jew while biologically the Black, to the 1930’s American graffito “A nigger is a Jew turned inside out,” these two peoples have been typecast as reflections of one another, and as substitutes for one another in society’s categorization of the Other.

O’Donnell (2020) Jacob Lawrence, Library, 1966 Apologia— Several exceptions notwithstanding (e.g., some titles treating the Reconstruction Era), this bibliography begins, roughly, with the twentieth century. I have not attempted to comprehensively cover works of nonfiction or the arts generally but, once more, I have made— and this time, a fair number of—exceptions by way of providing a taste of the requisite material. So, apart from the constraints of most of my other bibliographies: books, in English, these particular constraints are intended to keep the bibliography to a fairly modest length (around one hundred pages). This compilation is far from exhaustive, although it endeavors to be representative of the available literature, whatever the influence of my idiosyncratic beliefs and 1 preferences. I trust the diligent researcher will find titles on particular topics or subject areas by browsing carefully through the list. I welcome notice of titles by way of remedying any deficiencies. Finally, I have a separate bibliography on slavery, although its scope is well beyond U.S. history. * Or, if you prefer, “self-fulfillment and human flourishing (eudaimonia).” I’m not here interested in the question of philosophical and psychological differences between these concepts (i.e., self- realization and eudaimonia) and the existing and possible conceptions thereof, but more simply and broadly in their indispensable significance in reference to human nature and the pivotal metaphysical and moral purposes they serve in our critical and evaluative exercises (e.g., and after Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum, in employing criteria derived from the notion of ‘human capabilities and functionings’) as part of our individual and collective historical quest for “the Good.” However, I might note that all of these concepts assume a capacity for self- determination.

    religions Article Ancient Egyptians in Black and White: ‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’ and the Hamitic Hypothesis Justin Michael Reed Department of Biblical Studies, Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY 40205, USA; [email protected] Abstract: In this essay, I consider how the racial politics of Ridley Scott’s whitewashing of ancient Egypt in Exodus: Gods and Kings intersects with the Hamitic Hypothesis, a racial theory that asserts Black people’s inherent inferiority to other races and that civilization is the unique possession of the White race. First, I outline the historical development of the Hamitic Hypothesis. Then, I highlight instances in which some of the most respected White intellectuals from the late-seventeenth through the mid-twentieth century deploy the hypothesis in assertions that the ancient Egyptians were a race of dark-skinned Caucasians. By focusing on this detail, I demonstrate that prominent White scholars’ arguments in favor of their racial kinship with ancient Egyptians were frequently burdened with the insecure admission that these ancient Egyptian Caucasians sometimes resembled Negroes in certain respects—most frequently noted being skin color. In the concluding section of this essay, I use Scott’s film to point out that the success of the Hamitic Hypothesis in its racial discourse has transformed a racial perception of the ancient Egyptian from a dark-skinned Caucasian into a White person with appearance akin to Northern European White people. Dixon. pp. I**1* The theme of the twentieth century "wasteland" began with T. S. Eliot's influential poem, and has reached its present culmination point in the literature of the Absurd. In a wasteland or an Absurd world, man is out of harmony with his universe, with his fellow man, and even with himself. There is Nothingness in the center of the universe, and Noth- ingness in the heart or center of man as well. "God Is Dead" in the wasteland and consequently it is an Iconoclastic world without religion, and without love; a world of aesthetic and spiritual aridity and ster- ility. Most writers, critics, and students of literature are familiar with the concept of the wasteland, but many do not realize that this is not a twentieth century thematic phenomenon. The contemporary wasteland has its parallel in the early and middle nineteenth century with the Romantics; with such writers as Byron, Baudelaire, and Melville. The disillusionment of western man at the end of World War I was similar in many respects to that experienced by the Romantics at the end of the French Revolution. Furthermore, the break-up of the old order, and the disappearance of iod from the cosmos in the closing years of the eighteenth century, along with the shattering of many illusions by the discoveries of science, the loss of both religious and secular values, and the break-down in the political order in the early nineteenth century, left man alienated, isolated, homeless, and friend- less.

    A Musical Education: Lee Morgan and the Philadelphia Jazz Scene of the 1950s Byjeffery S. McMillan The guys were just looking at him. They couldn't believe what was coming out of that horn! You know, ideas like . where would you get them? Michael LaVoe (1999) When Michael LaVoe observed Lee Morgan, a fellow freshman at Philadelphia's Mastbaum Vocational Technical High School, playing trumpet with members of the school's dance band in the first days of school in September 1953, he could not believe his ears. Morgan, who had just turned fifteen years old the previous July, had remarkable facility on his instrument and displayed a sophisticated understanding of music for someone so young. Other members of the ensemble, some of whom al- ready had three years of musical training and performing experience in the school's vocational music program, experienced similar feelings of dis- belief when they heard the newcomer's precocious ability. Lee Morgan had successfully auditioned into Mastbaum's music program, the strongest of its kind in Philadelphia from the 1930s through the 1960s, and demon- strated a rare ability that begged the title "prodigy." Almost exactly three years later, in November of 1956, Lee Morgan, now a member of die Dizzy Gillespie orchestra, elicited a similar response at the professional level after the band's New York opening at Birdland. Word spread, and as the Gillespie band embarked on its national tour, au- diences and critics nationwide took notice of the young soloist featured on what was often the leader's showcase number: "A Night in Tunisia." Nat Hentoff caught the band on their return to New York from the Midwest in 1957.
