Cyborgs und Androiden Aspekte des Post- und Transhumanismus in The Six Million Dollar Man Silvia Woll The Six Million Dollar Man ist eine US-amerikanische Fernsehserie, die von 1973-1978 produziert wurde. Es entstanden fünf Staffeln mit insgesamt 108 Folgen zu jeweils 60 Min. Länge, die ab dem 18.01.1974 in den USA auf dem Sender ABC ausgestrahlt wurden. In Deutschland war die Serie erstmals am 18.07.1988 auf RTL Plus zu sehen. Sie basiert auf dem Roman Cyborg von Martin Caidin. Ausgestrahlt wurde der Pilot The Moon And The Desert 1972; er er- zielte so hohe Einschaltquoten, dass man ihn in eine Serie umsetzte, die ursprünglich nicht geplant war (vgl. http://www.imdb.com/title/ tt0071054/; 01.03.2014). Um den Anteil an spannungssteigernden Elementen zu erhöhen und die technikaffinen Motive zu verstärken, wurden im Vergleich zur Romanvorlage die durch Bionik bedingten Fähigkeiten des Protagonisten Steve Austin ausgebaut. So verfügt der Protagonist des Romans beispielsweise über eine Kamera in seinem rechten Auge, ist auf diesem aber blind (Caidin 1972, 15); in der Serie kann Steve Austin dagegen sehen und er hat im bionischen Auge zusätzlich eine Zoom- und eine Nachtsicht-Funktion (01/01, 00:09:10-00:10:30). -

Pro- grams such as the Apollo missions or even current speculation about manned missions to Mars, whatever scientific benefits might be expected, simultaneously generate a host of less obvious outcomes that are nonethe- less useful from the point of view of social control, nation building, and ideological reinforcement. Collecting moon rocks might have added to the storehouse of human knowledge, but the Apollo missions were also immensely useful to the U.S. government for providing a unifying goal by which to capture the national imagination in the midst of such legitima- tion crises as those related to Vietnam, the Cold War, and environmental destruction. We might go further, with Caffentzis and Federici, and discern in the asceticism and other-worldliness required by space exploration a way of disciplining the terrestrial labour force: “The launch of today’s high-tech industry needs a technological leap in the human machine—a big evolutionary leap in creating a new type of worker to match capital’s ESC 42.1–2 (March/June 2016): 89–114 investment needs” (61). Supervisor: Lissa Holloway-Attaway Khan 2 Machine Integration into Human Life: Mankind and Cyborgization There are particular ways through which people may get information and embrace technology so they can progress in their lives. However, considering technology as a ladder towards success and its usage in everyday life also makes people dependent on it to some extent. The integration of machines into human life has been explored in the novel Cyborg by illustrating its benefits, but the film Gamer reveals its dark side. A review of contemporary digitalized/mediated culture in relation to these two works shows that the availability of too much information quickly is a more of a dilemma than a beneficial facility. There is a significant difference between these two works: In the novel, man’s relationship with machines has been explained as the machine being man’s shield or strong defense, and the film makes it clear to the audience that being dependent on technology would give humanity nothing but severe consequences. As discussed by Steve Mizrach, “When human beings are offered by chances to use computers and electronic technologies within their lives to achieve certain goals then they will embrace them regardless of the risks” (Mizrach HTML). As a matter of fact, examples to prove this reality are not far away from us to observe in our everyday life where we can witness, for example, a sports personality accused of taking steroids, a teenager playing video games all day, massive increases in purchase, and the usage of different mobile gadgets and countries spending countless money every year to built deadly weapons. -

The main objectives of the study were to review the past and present science-fiction literature, artwork and films in order to identify and assess innovative technologies and concepts described therein which could possibly be developed further for space applications. In addition, it was hoped to garner imaginative ideas, potentially viable for long-term development by the European space sector, which could help in predicting the course of future space technologies and their impact. Those involved in the study (scientists, engineers, SF writers, laymen) reviewed and brain-stormed on the technologies in SF literature and came up with a list of technologies which an expert team is assessing to see whether they might be worthy of greater in-depth evaluation. -

Because of these similarities, the figure of the child and the figure of the cyborg frequently become linked in popular culture. Although the figure of the cyborg offers many liberating opportunities for alternative hybrid identity formations (as posthumanist Donna Haraway has pointed out), linking the figure of the child with regressive constructions of the cyborg can have many harmful consequences. Often, the figure of the cyborg becomes a site for the fears and phobias of adults afraid of the future. And since children are already sometimes marginalized in adult texts, or get used as adults experiment with their own anxieties about the present or the future, linking the figure of the child with the figure of the cyborg in some situations can theoretically create a doubly-differentiated “other.” -

Cyborgs: short incursions into Science-Fiction literature Olivier Simioni publié dans "CSI communications", 31(1), 2007, pp. 25-28 Computer Society of India Introduction Cyborg , a novel by American Science-Fiction author Martin Caidin was published in 1972. In 1974 the novel was adapted for a television serial and gained a certain renown. Indeed, one might easily remember the adventures of Steve Austin, the Six million dollar man . However, such a superhero figure seems today completely out of date. In 2003, Der letzte seiner Art , a novel by Science-Fiction author Andreas Eschbach, somehow sanctioned the end of the cyborg as a hero, his decline but also his return to humanity. Indeed, the cyborg is no longer a superhuman endowed with stupefying powers and capable of all achievements. He’s rather become a suffering man, still extraordinarily powerful but whose cogwheels are seized up, getting rusty, and whose life is becoming increasingly painful. This evolution shows to what extent Science-Fiction literature is not homogenous. Although often despised, this literary genre can approach the issue of the development of science and technology in an adult, serious and original perspective. The specific structure that characterises novels also offers a different though not less pertinent approach than science. By bringing humanness and often political aspects into the reflection about science and technology, Science-Fiction literature is able to adopt a different perspective on these matters and it puts forward questionings that are often neglected. This is precisely what we are about to endeavour here. Our task is not to enumerate Science-Fiction studies on cyborgs. -
