M.si³ ¹Ilmu Komunikasi, Fakultas Komunikasi Dan Bisnis, Universitas Telkom Abstrak Bandung yang merupakan salah satu kota besar di Jawa Barat dikenal sebagai kota kreatif di Indonesia yang memiliki banyak komunitas. Salah satunya adalah adanya komunitas ELF Bandung yang terbentuk akibat dari fenomena Korean wave yang terjadi di Indonesia. Komunitas tersebut merupakan perkumpulan dengan para anggota yang menggemari boyband dari Korea Selatan, Super Junior. Dengan adanya komunitas tersebut, tentunya para penggemar Super Junior di Bandung yang disebut ELF Bandung memiliki pengalaman sebelum hingga setelah menjadi ELF. Penelitian kualitatif ini menggunakan jenis pendekatan fenomenologi dengan paradigma konstruktivisme didukung teori interaksionisme simbolik. Teknik pengumpulan data yang dilakukan berupa wawancara mendalam tak terstruktur, observasi partisipatif moderat, serta analisis dokumen. Teknik analisis data dilakukan dengan menggunakan tahap-tahap reduksi fenomenologi menurut Creswell. Dengan adanya enam orang dari komunitas ELF Bandung yang bersedia menjadi informan, akhirnya penelitian ini berjalan dengan baik. Hasil penelitian yang diperoleh adalah keenam informan mencapai status identitas berupa achievement dimana mereka mengeksplor serta berkomitmen menggemari Super Junior dengan cara menjalin pertemanan dengan sesama ELF, membeli pernak-pernik, serta mengisi waktu luang dengan kegiatan yang berhubungan dengan Super Junior. Kesimpulan yang didapat dari hasil penelitian ini adalah adanya perubahan yang terjadi terhadap informan dari sebelum menggemari Super Junior hingga setelah menjadi ELF seperti mereka lebih loyal dalam membelanjakan uangnya dan meluangkan waktunya,sebagai ELF untuk Super Junior, faktor pendorong seperti bias di Super Junior, orangtua, serta komunitas ELF Bandung. -

(Signature, Date) Abstract This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis about the growing popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop) worldwide in recent years. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological. -

B.A. CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY DOMINGUEZ HILLS, 2000 "FUNK IS ITS OWN REWARD": AN ANALYSIS OF SELECTED LYRICS IN POPULAR FUNK MUSIC OF THE 1970s Advisor: Professor Daniel 0. Black Thesis dated July 2008 This research examined popular funk music as the social and political voice of African Americans during the era of the seventies. The objective of this research was to reveal the messages found in the lyrics as they commented on the climate of the times for African Americans of that era. A content analysis method was used to study the lyrics of popular funk music. This method allowed the researcher to scrutinize the lyrics in the context of their creation. When theories on the black vernacular and its historical roles found in African-American literature and music respectively were used in tandem with content analysis, it brought to light the voice of popular funk music of the seventies. This research will be useful in terms of using popular funk music as a tool to research the history of African Americans from the seventies to the present. The research herein concludes that popular funk music lyrics espoused the sentiments of the African-American community as it utilized a culturally familiar vernacular and prose to express the evolving sociopolitical themes amid the changing conditions of the seventies era. BAB I PENDAHULUAN 1.1 Latar Belakang Masalah Kemajuan teknologi yang semakin berkembang membuat masyarakat dapat dengan mudah mengakses berita-berita terbaru dari seluruh lapisan dunia. Pertukaran berita, budaya, hingga ide-ide kreatif dapat terjadi dengan cepat dan mudah. Sudah cukup banyak kreatifitas budaya dan seni yang mendunia seperti dari Amerika dan Jepang, tetapi pada masa sekarang ini, budaya Korea Selatan yang sedang menjadi lokomotif utama budaya kaum muda di seluruh kawasan lingkaran pasifik. Hampir seluruh masyarakat dunia merasakan “demam” Korea Selatan yang sedang mewabah ini. “Demam” Korea ini disebut dengan Korean Wave. Korean Wave adalah istilah yang dibuat oleh warga China sebagai arti kemajuan dari budaya Korea Selatan di dunia. Pada awalnya Korea Selatan terkenal dengan dunia film dan drama, namun sejak mewabahnya lagu “Gangnam Style” di tahun 2011, bidang musik Korea Selatan mulai menjadi pusat perhatian masyarakat dunia. Istilah musik populer asal Korea Selatan disebut dengan Korean Pop atau K-Pop. Jenis musik yang menarik ditambah dengan fisik artis-artis Korea Selatan yang tampan dan cantik membuat K-Pop sangat digemari. Begitu banyak jenis girls group dan boyband K-Pop berbakat yang muncul dengan berbagai kemampuan, jenis lagu, dan tarian. Dengan demikian, sulit untuk mengetahui 1 Universitas Kristen Maranatha 2 kelompok musik seperti apa yang menjadi idola. Beragam acara penghargaan dilakukan untuk memilih kelompok musik yang terbaik. Pada Agustus 2015, penghargaan Internasional The Teen Choice Award yang dilakukan di Los Angeles memberikan penghargaan kepada boyband asal Korea Selatan Super Junior sebagai Best International Artist. Situs SBS menambahkan, Super Junior bahkan mengalahkan boyband asal inggris yaitu One Direction. Kemenangan Super Junior membuktikan bahwa mereka behasil menjadi kelompok musik terbaik dari berbagai kelompok musik berbakat di Korea Selatan bahkan di dunia. -

THE SOUNDS OF LIBERATION: RESISTANCE, CULTURAL RETENTION, AND PROGRESSIVE TRADITIONS FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE IN AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSIC A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Professional Studies by Luqman Muhammad Abdullah May 2009 © 2009 Luqman Muhammad Abdullah ABSTRACT The cultural production of music in the Black community has traditionally operated as much more than a source of entertainment. In fact, my thesis illustrates how progressive traditions for social justice in Black music have acted as a source of agency and a tool for resistance against oppression. This study also explains how the music of African Americans has served as a primary mechanism for disseminating their cultural legacy. I have selected four Black artists who exhibit the aforementioned principles in their musical production. Bernice Johnson Reagon, John Coltrane, Curtis Mayfield and Gil Scott-Heron comprise the talented cadre of musicians that exemplify the progressive Black musical tradition for social justice in their respective genres of gospel, jazz, soul and spoken word. The methods utilized for my study include a socio-historical account of the origins of Black music, an overview of the artists’ careers, and a lyrical analysis of selected songs created by each of the artists. This study will contribute to the body of literature surrounding the progressive roles, functions and utilities of African American music.
