Transit from lock to lock has to be calculated with approx. 8 hours depending on the traffic situation and including time needed for passing the locks of Kiel-Holtenau and Brunsbüttel. There are no special documents required for the Kiel-Canal transit. Our waterclerks will board the vessel upon arrival locks for clearance. The Master is requested to present the original International Tonnage Certificate, having a copy of same available and a copy of crewlist for Immigration officers. Tug-assistance is generally not compulsory, but sometimes ordered by the Master in order to ensure a safe approach - especially in Brunsbüttel due to current/tide in River Elbe. Vessels transitting in traffic group 6 (vessel's dimensions exceeding a length of 200 metres and/or a breadth of 27 metres) have to accept tug-assistance when approaching Brunsbüttel locks from River Elbe. • From Emden (East Frisia) Through the Kiel Canal to Kiel
From Emden (East Frisia) through the Kiel Canal to Kiel Sun 03 June 2018 – Fri 08 June 2018 Our sailing trip begins in the seaport town of Emden. This is where the Emder Matjestage (literally translated as Soused Herring Days) – a colourful folk festival celebrating the long tradition of herring fishing – will be taking place before we set sail. With our 'tall ship' we will sail along the East Frisian island chain and then head for the locks to the Kiel Canal, which links the North Sea to the Baltic sea. Depending on weather conditions and the progress of our journey, there will be time for a short shore leave in Bremerhaven. At the end of the Canal passage, we will moor in Kiel. This busy part of the sea offers exciting and eventful days with many maritime encounters and experiences. Enjoy relaxing days on board, following the rhythm of the North Sea tides and between the banks of the Canal in the middle of Schleswig-Holstein! No previous knowledge or experience is required to sail on our windjammer. This is where you will go on board: Emden, East Frisia Our crew will welcome you on board in the seaport town of Emden. Embarkation will take place at 19:00 hours. Afterwards, you will have dinner together in the comfortable lounge, where you will quickly feel at home on the Eye of the Wind's deck and get to know your fellow sailors. On the weekend before we arrive in Emden, everything will be revolving around small fish: the Matjestage (literally translated as Soused Herring Days) will be celebrated for the 29th time in the seaport town.

... through the scenic Kiel Canal “Tall Ship Taster Trip” from Hamburg to Kiel Tue 11 May 2021 Sat 15 May 2021 Join the Eye of the Wind's crew on a sailing trip between Hamburg and Kiel – right through the middle of Schleswig-Holstein. First, we will explore the territory of the Lower Elbe. On the Kiel Canal, we pass under ten high bridges and will experience the endless shipping traffic of container ships, cruise liners, pleasure boats and ferries on the world's busiest artificial waterway. At the end of the trip, we will set sail towards the Kiel Fjord. Something to enjoy: Sailing the waterways through the Kiel Canal Every year, around 40,000 ships pass through the exits of the Kiel Canal (in German: Nord-Ostsee-Kanal, literally 'North-to-Baltic Sea canal'). The canal was opened by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1895 – later on, the construction costs were raised by a tax on sparkling- wine introduced by the Kaiser. The journey will take us right through Schleswig- Holstein, along green banks and under high railway bridges which almost seem to touch the top of our mast. During this cruise, you will have time to make yourself comfortable on deck or in the comfy lounge and browse through the extensive on-board library or the DVDs, read a book, explore the ship and enjoy delicious culinary creations from the on-board kitchen. Overnight stay in Rendsburg We plan an overnight stay in Rendsburg, the charming town between the river Eider and the Kiel Canal. For the Eye of the Wind, this stay is a kind of nostalgic journey into her own past, as the builder and contractor who had the ship built in 1911 was a captain from the Rendsburg area.

  • Guidelines for Using the Index of Persons and Places
Guidelines for Using the Index of Persons and Places The index contains the names of more than 15,000 persons and places mentioned in Witt’s diary. In addition, it contains over 1,000 references that are meant to assist the reader in finding specific persons and places. The comments below are intended to help facilitate use of the index and to explain the possibilities and limits for indexing of names of persons and places mentioned in Witt’s diary. Page numbers and volumes in the index refer to page numbers and volumes of the manuscript. The page numbers of the manuscript are inserted in brackets in the present text. Persons The index encompasses all specifically named real individuals. Indirect mention of or allusion to a person, where the person’s name is not mentioned, have not been included (thus, for example, the mention of a person by indication of his/her family relationship or formal office − e.g. ‘his brother,’ ‘the mayor of Lima’). A person’s name is likewise not indexed if the name itself is not mentioned but rather only an artifact named after the individual (e.g. ‘Trajan’s Column’). However, the person’s name is indexed if it is part of the name of a business firm, such as ‘Antony Gibbs and Sons,’ although ‘and sons’ here would not be included in the entry. If families, spouses, or the children of a family are indexed as a couple or a group, wherever possible they are indexed individually with their first name as well. If the first name is not known, then wherever possible an addition is included (such as the word ‘family’ or ‘Mr., Mrs., Miss, Ms.’) in order to indicate whether the referent is a family, a man or boy, a woman or girl.

The Visits of the German War Cruiser Karlsruhe By Simone Santiago Ramos The use of ships for training cruises is a German tradition that goes back to the Prussian corvette Amazone in the mid-1850s which visited ports along the North Sea. 1 After the unification of Germany in 1871, the Imperial German Navy continued the practice. By the late nineteenth century, Germany possessed a colonial empire scattered around the globe, and “showing the flag” was essential. These cruises not only strengthened the ties between the emigrants and the homeland, but also helped improve relationships with the visited countries. During the Great War the training ceased, and it took several years for the new German government, the Weimar Republic, to restart them.
