Guidelines for Using the Index of Persons and Places Guidelines for Using the Index of Persons and Places The index contains the names of more than 15,000 persons and places mentioned in Witt’s diary. In addition, it contains over 1,000 references that are meant to assist the reader in finding specific persons and places. The comments below are intended to help facilitate use of the index and to explain the possibilities and limits for indexing of names of persons and places mentioned in Witt’s diary. Page numbers and volumes in the index refer to page numbers and volumes of the manuscript. The page numbers of the manuscript are inserted in brackets in the present text. Persons The index encompasses all specifically named real individuals. Indirect mention of or allusion to a person, where the person’s name is not mentioned, have not been included (thus, for example, the mention of a person by indication of his/her family relationship or formal office − e.g. ‘his brother,’ ‘the mayor of Lima’). A person’s name is likewise not indexed if the name itself is not mentioned but rather only an artifact named after the individual (e.g. ‘Trajan’s Column’). However, the person’s name is indexed if it is part of the name of a business firm, such as ‘Antony Gibbs and Sons,’ although ‘and sons’ here would not be included in the entry. If families, spouses, or the children of a family are indexed as a couple or a group, wherever possible they are indexed individually with their first name as well. If the first name is not known, then wherever possible an addition is included (such as the word ‘family’ or ‘Mr., Mrs., Miss, Ms.’) in order to indicate whether the referent is a family, a man or boy, a woman or girl. In indexing married couples, two entries with the same family name are included in order to indicate that husband and wife are referred to. Names are reproduced in the index in the specific manner of spelling in which they appear in the diary. If the name of a person is written incorrectly, it also appears in the index in this same way. If the name of a person is given in variant spellings in the diary, it appears in the index in the current customary manner of spelling today. If all the spellings today are incorrect, it appears in the manner of spelling most frequently used Ulrich Muecke - 9789004307247 Downloaded from Brill.com10/04/2021 07:47:12AM via free access 398 Guidelines for Using the Index of Persons and Places by Witt. In any event, all the variant spellings of the person’s name are given in the entry, with the deviating spellings listed as variants in parentheses. This is done for both all first and family names. In the case of first names that appear in different languages in the diary, as a rule the main entry utilizes the language that was the mother tongue of this given individual (the other spellings are given as variants). If Witt does not give the name in the mother tongue of the person referred to, the name is given in the index in the language most frequently used in the diary. Titles of nobility are indexed if they appear in the text. If a person of nobility also appears mentioned by their civil name, then as a rule the name is included in the index under the civil name, and the title of nobility is listed there as a variant. Persons mentioned in the text only by first name are also indexed accordingly, only by first name, unless the family name can be inferred from the context with relative certainty. Persons mentioned in the text only by family name are indexed with their family name and ‘Mr. or Mrs./Miss/Ms.’ (if the gender is identifiable from the context) and depending on how Witt refers to a person of female gender. If the gender is not identifiable, only the family name is given. Since not all of the names of persons mentioned by Witt can be unambiguously identified, a family name in the index can refer to several different individuals, or to a person who also appears in the index elsewhere with first name as well, or indexed elsewhere only by his/her first name. To facilitate identification of persons, ecclesiastical, military and academic titles and ranks are given in the case of individuals whose first names do not appear (such as ‘Bishop, General, Colonel, Dr.’, etc.). Married women mentioned in Witt’s diary only or principally by their married name are indexed under their married name, and their maiden name is given in parentheses. Married women referred to by Witt mainly using their maiden name (because in the diary they are mentioned principally as unmarried persons), are indexed under their maiden name, and their married name is added in parentheses. Women who, due to several marriages in the course of their life, appear mentioned in the diary under more than one married name, are indexed under their maiden name, and their married names are added in the entry in parentheses. The only exception is Witt’s wife, who is indexed as ‘Witt, Maria Teodora del Patrocinio (born Sierra, married von Lotten) (Mariquita),’ the first names and family names used by Witt in his diary. In the case of persons who can be indexed under various different names (e.g. women with a maiden name and married name[s]; persons of nobility Ulrich Muecke - 9789004307247 Downloaded from Brill.com10/04/2021 07:47:12AM via free access Guidelines for Using the Index of Persons and Places 399 with their title or their civil name; persons whose name in the diary is written in variant spellings, etc.), there are entries for all ways of spelling the individual’s name, along with a reference to that entry where the volume and page number are given. There are no separate entries in the case of differing ways of spelling or variant names which happen to be similar that they would be included in the index very close one to the other. But in this case as well, variant ways of spelling and variant names for one and the same individual are given as variants in the entry in parentheses. Places The index includes those place names that during the time of composition by the writer or the time period described were administrative units, i.e. countries, provinces, duchies, localities, states, confederations of states, etc. In addition, geographical units such as continents, regions and islands are also indexed. Not included are valleys, mountains, rivers, bays, seas, oceans and the like. In the case of place names, they too are not indexed if reference is not to the place itself but to an event that occurred there (e.g. ‘Berlin Congress’) or an associated artifact (‘Altona Kiel Railway,’ ‘guide book Holstein Tourist’) or another place bearing that name (‘Trafalgar Square’). Places that were separate or independent units in the 19th century are indexed with their own entry even if today they no longer officially constitute such an administrative unit (such as ‘Altona’). Confederations of states or empires are indexed by their name (e.g. ‘Perú-Bolivian Confederacy’), or they appear in the entry for the components making up the confederation (for example, ‘United Kingdom of Sweden and Norway,’ indexed both under ‘Sweden’ and ‘Norway’), or they appear under their name common in references in everyday language, without a separate entry of their own (such as ‘North German Confederacy’ included under the entry ‘Germany’). Place names are reproduced in the index in the specific manner of spelling in which they appear in the diary. If the name of a place appears in various ways of spelling, then it is indexed in the manner of spelling closest to the most common current spelling in English. If no English manner of spelling is used in the text, then in the event of variant spellings, the entry is given in the spelling most similar to that in the language spoken in that locality or place. Thus, German places are indexed in their English manner of spelling if this way of spelling actually occurs in the diary. If it does not, then they appear in the German spelling, not the Spanish one. If there are variant spellings, they are included in parentheses.

Brussels PRINTED FOR MELINE, CANS A.ND C"., EOILEVARD DE WATERLOO, Zi. M DCCC XXXIX. MR V. un:ve PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION. To assist in the detection of spurious and the correction of inaccu- rate pedigrees, is one of the purposes of the present publication, in which respect the first Volume has been of acknowledged utility. The two together, it is hoped, will form a comprehensive and tole- rably correct Register of Pedigrees. It will be observed that some of the Mares which appeared in the last Supplement (whereof this is a republication and continua- tion) stand as they did there, i. e. without any additions to their produce since 1813 or 1814. — It has been ascertained that several of them were about that time sold by public auction, and as all attempts to trace them have failed, the probability is that they have either been converted to some other use, or been sent abroad. If any proof were wanting of the superiority of the English breed of horses over that of every other country, it might be found in the avidity with which they are sought by Foreigners. The exportation of them to Russia, France, Germany, etc. for the last five years has been so considerable, as to render it an object of some importance in a commercial point of view.
