Adele Shaw Category Manager BC LIQUOR STORES 1 2 Islay Scotch 1. BUNNAHABHAIN 1980 CANASTA FINISH This limited edition bottling was matured in Oloroso sherry casks before finishing in Canasta sherry casks. Notes of rich oak, dried fruit, figs, raisins and sultanas, balanced with treacle toffee, dark chocolate and vanilla. 165600 1 bottle limit $3,450.00 3 2. BOWMORE 27 YEAR OLD THE VINTNER’S TRILOGY The Third in the Vintner’s Trilogy from Bowmore. A meticulously double-matured scotch with a luxurious balance of sweet, spice, salt and peat smoke from the home of the world’s oldest scotch maturation warehouse, the legendary No. 1 Vaults. Double-matured, first for 13 years in ex-bourbon barrels, then for 14 years in port pipes resulted in a deep mahogany and perfectly balanced liquid.. 243764 1 bottle limit $650.00 3. BRUICHLADDICH RARE CASK SERIES 1984 32 YEAR OLD “…aged in twelve bourbon barrels and re-casked into fresh bourbon wood in 2009. …nose of canned peaches, dates, marzipan, and a hint of milky coffee. Rich fruit flavours lead on the palate: …with vanilla and nutty oak. Slowly drying in the finish, with warming spices. Sometimes good bourbon casks are all you need.” 93 pts – Whisky Advocate 2018 220382 1 bottle limit $1,550.00 4 4. BRUICHLADDICH RARE CASK SERIES 1985 32 YEAR OLD “…filled into 22 third-fill bourbon casks, this 32 year old was re-casked into first-fill bourbon barrels in 2012, then finished in French oak wine barrels…Fruity and spicy on the luscious palate …Long in the finish, with ever-present fruitiness, plus prickly chili notes.” 92 pts – Whisky Advocate 2018 220387 1 bottle limit $1,550.00 5. BRUICHLADDICH RARE CASK SERIES 1986 30 YEAR OLD “…distilled in December 1986 and filled into seven oloroso sherry butts. In 2012 the whisky was transferred to Pedro Ximénez butts for finishing. The nose yields sultanas, figs, old leather, and white pepper. Very sweet fruit notes on the palate… with background rich sherry, dates, and treacle. Long and warming in the finish, with a wisp of smoke and fruit spices.” 91 pts – Whisky Advocate 2018 211596 1 bottle limit $1,550.00 5 6. BRUICHLADDICH BLACK ART 6.1 The mysterious Black Art series continues with the 6.1 release. It is an unpeated 26 year old whisky distilled in 1990. Expect rich berry and jammy notes with robust fruit and spice. The flavour is balanced with dark chocolate and the underlying sweetly fruity Bruichladdich character. 211602 2 bottle limit $425.00 7. BRUICHLADDICH OCTOMORE 09.3 One of the latest editions of the Octomore super heavily peated range, 09.3 is peated at 133ppm. Just 52 tonnes of precious Islay barley were malted to produce this single farm Octomore 09.3 edition. Raised in Irene’s Field on Octomore Farm in 2011, this uber-provenance single malt was later distilled and filled into 134 casks. Predominantly second-fill, the gentler influence of the wood allows more of the locally grown barley flavours to cut through the legendary peat smoke. 177715 $289.99 6 8. BRUICHLADDICH OCTOMORE 09.1 Octomore 09.1 is peated at 156ppm and is one of the latest editions to Octomore’s super heavily peated malts range. Octomore 09.1 questions the fundamentals of superior single malt scotch. Confident in its five year age statement, their Head Distiller demonstrates how a focus on raw ingredients and considered distillation can definitively debunk the myth that older is better. Distilled in 2012 from 100% Scottish barley, the 09.1 is matured full-term in top-tier ex-American whiskey casks. 177712 $209.99 9. BRUICHLADDICH PORT CHARLOTTE MRC: 01 Port Charlotte MCR: 01 is a limited release in Bruichladdich’scask exploration series which showcases the influence of wood on heavily peated spirit. It is always bottled at cask strength and in limited numbers. Maturation in 50% first- fill American whisky casks and 50% in second-fill French wine casks and then vatted and further aged in French oak Bordeaux wine casks for a year long finish. A whisky that has a superb combination of fruit-laden French oak, strong peat smoke and Islay maturation. 211605 $149.99 7 10. BUNNAHABHAIN 29 YEAR OLD CELEBRATION OF THE CASK A Càrn Mòr bottling of 29 year old single malt from Bunnahabhain, a single cask single malt, is independently bottled as part of the Celebration of the Cask range. This was aged in a single hogshead from November 1988 to March 2018, producing just 146 bottles of excellent Islay whisky that is un-chill filtered and bottled at natural cask strength. The whisky has lovely white grape and ginger aromas that transform into spiced cherry compote with a whiff of sandalwood on the palate. 225964 $645.00 11. LAPHROAIG CAIRDEAS FINO CASK Cairdeas showcases a special double-maturation in first-fill ex- bourbon casks then fino sherry casks. Notes of toasted almond, dried fruit and sea salt perfectly complement the peatiness. An unique expression to be savoured. 140158 1 bottle limit $94.99 8 12. PORT ASKAIG 100 PROOF ISLAY “…Astonishing, the sugars melt in the mouth on impact. Just a light oiliness coats the mouth… citrus phenols… what perfect oak must have been deployed. …vanilla/butterscotch… spice and smoke… a must experience malt. If you find a more beautifully paced, weighted and elegant Islay this year, I’d really like to hear it…” 96.5 pts – Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2018 189776 $99.99 9 Speyside Scotch 13. ABERLOUR 18 YEAR OLD “Thick milkshake with various fruits and vanilla; immediate fresh juice which curdles beautifully as the vanilla is added, …wonderful fruit chocolate fudge development: long, and guided by a gentle oiliness; another high performance distillery age- stated bottling.” 91 pts – Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2018 611558 $209.99 14. CAPERDONICH 29 YEAR OLD CELEBRATION OF THE CASK From the closed Caperdonich distillery, this scotch was aged in a single hogshead from June 1988 to March 2018. It is then bottled as part of the Celebration of the Cask range. Un-chill filtered and bottled at natural cask strength with just 203 bottles produced. This rarely seen single malt has lovely old oak and buttered pancake aromas that come alive in the palate in the form of tropical fruit flavours mixed with cinnamon buns, creamy vanilla and spice. 215539 $650.00 10 15. CONVALMORE 32 YEAR OLD “Distilled in 1984, just a few months before the distillery closed. A whiff of early earthiness gives way to pear drops, honey, vanilla… Pears, pineapple, caramel, and vanilla on the slightly waxy, spicy palate. Slowly drying in the medium-length finish, with peppery licorice and a hint of char.” Whisky Advocate 2017 119444 $1,600.00 16.

  • Before Johnny Walker Black Label and Chivas Regal Took the Indian
Before Johnny Walker Black Label and Chivas Regal took the Indian whisky market by storm there was a malt whisky being produced in India for quite some time, since 1855 in fact! Also this distillery is situated in the foothills of the Himalayas!! The brewing, distillation and maturation processes followed at the distillery are very similar to that of Scotch whisky. Yes I am referring to Mohan “Meakin’s Solan No 1”. The distillery is situated in Kasauli, a small town in Solan district in the state of Himachal Pradesh. So if you are one of those who believe that water plays a major role in the outcome of the distilled spirit then this location has perhaps some of the best streams of fresh water in the world. Pic. (1)Location of Solan district, 65 Kms from Chandigarh Now we are not talking about one of the multiple dubious whiskies produced in India, this one is a “legitimate” whisky even by Scottish standards! In fact this was considered the “only whisky” produced in India for a very long time, as this is a “Malt” whisky produced from barley unlike most other whiskies produced in India which use molasses. This distillery is well known for the “OLD MONK” rum, which most readers from the subcontinent will be familiar with. Till recently I had a misconception that it was a single malt whisky, which is what Wikipedia also states (have submitted a correction) but a little more research/ observation has shown me that this is a blended malt whisky. Pic. (2)Solan No 1 Bottle So why am I drinking this and writing about it? And most importantly what has Bangalore got to do with this?? Solan number 1 was one of the most popular whisky back in the 80’s and largely supplied its products to the defense services of India.
