Résumé L’objet de notre travail a porté sur l’étude de Teucrium polium L. Capitatum une plante médicinale très répandue dans les steppes algériennes. Plusieurs volets d’étude ont été touchés tels que l’aspect morphologique, les constituants physio-biochimiques, et les effets biologiques . Les analyses morphologiques ont porté sur dix populations échantillonnées dans différents biotopes de l’Est algérien. Cette étude a montrée que les feuilles ont le plus faible nombre (cinq sur dix) de types de trichomes, suivies par les calices et les corolles avec huit types chacun . Ce qui confirme l’absence d’une variabilité intraspécifique chez les populations examinées . D’autre part, l’analyse des relations entre les caractères morphologiques et les facteurs du milieu d’origine, ont permis de montrer que le biotope intervient sur la longueur des trichomes. L’utilisation de la technique d ’électrophorèse monodimensionnelle sur gel polyacrylamide en présence d ’un détergent (SDS-PAGE) a permis de déterminer les profils des protéines totales des dix populations. Les coefficients de similitude des bandes polypeptidiques obtenus montrent des similitudes élevées entre les populations étudiées. Les analyses biochimiques sur les trois phénotypes de Teucrium polium L. Capitatum ont montré que les extraits des phénotypes mauves sont les plus riches en anthocyanines, en sucres solubles et en caroténoïdes par rapport aux phénotypes rose et blanc mettant ainsi l’importance de la couleur de la fleur. La combinaison de certaines méthodes d’analyses chimiques; spectrophotométrie (UV) et chromatographique (CLHP) ont pe rmis d’identifier 3 flavonoïdes dont un majoritaire la cyanidine et deux autres flavonoïdes; la quercétine et l’acide caféique. L’évaluation du pouvoir antioxydant qui a été réalisée en utilisant les méthodes du piégeage du radical libre DPPH et celle de l a réduction du fer FRAP a indiqué que l’extrait de la population de Biskra a montré une meilleure capacité réductrice par rapport à celui de Sétif et un fort piégeage des radicaux DPPH● . En ce qui concerne l’activité antibactérienne, il apparait que les ex traits des deux populations possèdent des propriétés antibactériennes acceptables. L’évaluation de l’effet pharmacologique de Teucrium polium L. Capitatum a mis en évidence une propriété diurétique intéressante. Mots clés: Teucrium polium L. Capitatum ، ﺍﻟﻌﺎﺋﻠﺔ ﺍﻟﺸﻔﻮﻳﺔ ، ﺍﻷﻭﺑﺎﺭ ، ﺍﻟﻔﺼﻞ ﺍﻟﻜﻬﺮﺑﺎﺋﻲ، CLHP، ﺍﻟﻮﻅﻴﻔﺔ ﺍﻟﻤﻀﺎﺩﺓ ﻟ ﻸﻛﺴﺪﺓ، ﺍﻟﻮﻅﻴﻔﺔ ﺍﻟﻤﻀﺎﺩﺓ ﻟﻠﺒﻜﺘﻴﺮﻳﺎ ، ﻓﻌﻞ ﺍﺩﺭﺍﺭ ﺍﻟﺒﻮﻝ. ii ABSTRACT The purpose of our work has focused on the study of Teucrium polium L. Capitatum , which is a widespread medicinal plant in algerian steppes. Several study topics were investigated such as the morphology, physio-biochemical constituents and biological effects. The morphological analysis consisted of ten populations sampled at different habitats in eastern Algeria. This study revealed that the leaves have the lowest number (five out of ten) of types of trichomes, followed by the calyx and corolla with eight types for each. This confirms the absence of intraspecific variability within the study populations. Furthermore, the analysis of relationships between morphological characteristics and environmental factors of their habitat showed that the latter influences the length of trichomes. The use of one-dimensional electrophoresis technique on polyacrylamide gel in the presence of detergent (SDS-PAGE) allowed to determine the total protein profiles of the ten study populations. The similarity coefficients of polypeptide bands indicated high similarity between populations. Biochemical analyzes of the three phenotypes of T. polium L. Capitatum showed that extracts of purple phenotypes were richest in anthocyanins, soluble sugars and carotenoids compared with pink and white phenotypes enlightening there by the importance of flower color. The combination of certain chemical analysis methods, spectrophotometry (UV-visible) and chromatographic (HPLC) have identified three flavonoids including mostly the cyanidin and two other flavonoids, quercetin and caffeic acid. The evaluation of the antioxidant potency, that was conducted using the method of trapping the free radical DPPH and that of iron reduction FRAP, revealed that the extract of Biskra population showed higher reducing capacity compared to that of Sétif, with a strong trapping of DPPH● radicals. As regards to the antibacterial activity, it appears that extracts from two populations have acceptable antibacterial properties. The pharmacological effect of T. polium L. Capitatum showed an interesting diuretic property. Keywords: Teucrium polium L. (Lamiaceae) is a perennial aromatic herb, which is widespread in the high altitude areas of the central and eastern parts of South Africa and also occurs in southwest Botswana and central Namibia. It is closely related to Salvia runcinata L. f. and Salvia repens Burch, ex Benth., with which it forms a species complex. The most recent revision of southern African Salvia species is that by Codd (1985). In this revision, the most important characters used in delimiting the three taxa were corolla size, calyx size and trichome density. As a result of intergrading morphological characters, the specific limits between the three taxa are not clear and positive identification of typical material is often difficult. Taxonomic delimitation through use of chemical characters was therefore the principle objective of this study. The taxa represented in this species complex are known in folk medicine and plant extracts have been used in the treatment of urticaria, body sores, and stomach ailments and as a disinfectant.

This enzyme is further implicated in the involvement of melanin in malignant melanoma, the most life- threatening skin tumors. Although, synthetic products were found effective to combat this menace, nevertheless, overtime detrimental effect on human skin is a challenge. Investigation of natural tyrosinase inhibitors from methanol extracts of medicinal plants of Lamiaceae family using L-tyrosine as substrate on three different complementary assays (TLC bio-autography, spectrophotometry and cyclic voltammetry) was carried out accordingly. The result indicated Salvia chamelaeagnea, Salvia dolomitica, Plectranthus ecklonii, Plectranthus namaensis, and Plectranthus zuluensis, with significant zone of inhibition against tyrosinase on TLC bio-autography, spectrophotometry result showed that extracts of Plectranthus ecklonii (IC50 = 21.58 휇g/mL), Plectranthus zuluensis (IC50 = 23.99 휇g/mL), Plectranthus madagascariensis (IC50 = 23.99 휇g/mL) and Salvia lanceolata (IC50 = 28.83) demonstrated good anti-tyrosinase activity when compared with kojic acid (IC50 = 3.607 μg/mL). On the other hand, cyclic voltammetry are in consonant with above results thereby supported the nomination of some of the extracts as strong anti-tyrosinase agents.

    1 Chapter 4 Phytomorph and Geomorph Identification © This Chapter is based on three published works: (1) a paper by Hugh O Neall (1944) that identifies two New World plants (sunflower and chili peppers) in the Voynich manuscript; (2) a paper of Tucker and Talbert (2013) which identified 39 plants in the Voynich as indigenous to the New World; (3) a paper by Tucker and Janick (2016) which extended the list to 59 species. Although many of the illustrations of the Voynich Codex on first blush could be considered bizarre or whimsical (See Figure in Chapter 14) most contain morphological structures which permit botanical identification. Many enthusiasts have attempted to analyze the plants of the Voynich Codex, but few are knowledgeable plant taxonomists or botanists, despite their large web presence. Most of the plant identification has been predicated on the conclusion that the Voynich is a 15th century European manuscript (Friedman 1962). The principal reports in a web report by non botanists Edith and Erica Sherwood (http:www.edithsherwood.comn/coyhnich_botanical_plants) who identifies he plants as Mediterranean based on their premise that Voynich is a 15th century Italian manuscript and claims to find signature of Leonardo da Vinci in voynich drawings. We respectfully disagree with both assertions. The first exception to the conclusion that the Voynich plants were European is a short remarkable 1944 paper in Speculum (a refereed journal of the Medieval Academy of America) by the distinguished plant taxonomist, the Rev./Dr. Hugh O’Neill (1894–1969), former Director of the Herbarium (official acronym LCU) at the Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington, D.C.

This review focuses on the well-known phenolic antioxidant rosmarinic acid (RA), an ester of caffeic acid and (R)-(+)-3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl) lactic acid, describing its wide distribution in thirty-nine plant families and the potential productivity of plant sources.

Their ability to produce aromatic volatile oils has made them valuable sources of materials in the cosmetic, culinary, and pharmaceutical industries. A thorough account of the taxonomic diversity, chemistry and ethnobotany is lacking for southern African Lamiaceae, which feature some of the region’s most notable medicinal and edible plant species. We provide a comprehensive insight into the Lamiaceae flora of southern Africa, comprising 297 species in 42 genera, 105 of which are endemic to the subcontinent. We further explore the medicinal and traditional uses, where all genera with documented uses are covered for the region. A broad review of the chemistry of southern African Lamiaceae is presented, noting that only 101 species (34%) have been investigated chemically (either their volatile oils or phytochemical characterization of secondary metabolites), thus presenting many and varied opportunities for further studies. A Residual Maximum Likelihood (REML) procedure was used to construct a database of relative 103/106Ru concentrations in 114 species of flowering plants including 106 species from experiments and 12 species from the literature (with 4 species in both). An Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), coded using a recent phylogeny for flowering plants, was used to identify a signif- icant phylogenetic effect on relative mean 103/106Ru concentrations in flowering plants. There were differ- ences of 2465-fold in the concentration to which plant species took up 103/106Ru. Thirty-nine percent of the variance in inter-species differences could be ascribed to the taxonomic level of Order or above. Plants in the Orders Geraniales and Asterales had notably high uptake of 103/106Ru compared to other plant groups. Plants on the Commelinoid monocot clades, and especially the Poaceae, had notably low uptake of 103/106Ru. These data demonstrate that plant species are not independent units for 103/106Ru concentrations but are linked through phylogeny. It is concluded that models of soil-to-plant transfer of 103/106Ru should assume that; neither soil variables alone affect transfer nor plant species are independent units, and taking account of plant phylogeny might aid predictions of soil-to-plant transfer of 103/106Ru, especially for spe- cies for which Transfer Factors are not available.
