Besides fibre, seeds and oil, hemp contains high quantity of essential oil (EO). Hop (Humulus lupulus L., Cannabaceae) is a high- climbing, perennial vine, largely utilized in the brewing industry to add flavour and bitterness to beer. While it is known that hop also contains α- and ß-acids, and terpenes that have been found to be toxic, anti- feedant, and repellent for insects and mites, little is known about the bioactivity against problematic species of the hemp essential oil. In this study, the chemical composition of the EOs from C. sativa and H. lupulus was evaluated by GC-MS, and their acute toxicity was assessed against, the Asian tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus (Skuse) (Diptera Culicidae) and, the freshwater bladder snail Physella acuta (Draparnaud) (Mollusca Physidae), two problematic invasive species. Furthermore, we evaluated the toxicity of both EOs against a non-target insect, the mayfly Cloeon dipterum L. -

Po završetku Gimnazije, 2008. godine, upisuje osnovne akademske studije na Prirodno-matematičkom fakultetu Univerziteta u Nišu, na Departmanu za biologiju i ekologiju. Osnovne akademske studije završava 2011. godine sa diplomom osnovnih studija i zvanjem ,,biolog“. Iste godine upisuje master akademske studije na Departmanu za biologiju i ekologiju Prirodno- matematičkog fakulteta u Nišu, smer Ekologija i zaštita prirode. -

(Lamiaceae) is a perennial aromatic herb, which is widespread in the high altitude areas of the central and eastern parts of South Africa and also occurs in southwest Botswana and central Namibia. It is closely related to Salvia runcinata L. f. and Salvia repens Burch, ex Benth., with which it forms a species complex. The most recent revision of southern African Salvia species is that by Codd (1985). In this revision, the most important characters used in delimiting the three taxa were corolla size, calyx size and trichome density. As a result of intergrading morphological characters, the specific limits between the three taxa are not clear and positive identification of typical material is often difficult. Taxonomic delimitation through use of chemical characters was therefore the principle objective of this study. The taxa represented in this species complex are known in folk medicine and plant extracts have been used in the treatment of urticaria, body sores, and stomach ailments and as a disinfectant. -

UNIVERSITÀ DEGLI STUDI DI PISA Dipartimento di Farmacia CORSO DI LAUREA MAGISTRALE IN FARMACIA Tesi di Laurea Analisi dei costituenti volatili emessi in vivo da specie del genere Salvia facenti parte di una collezione dell'Orto Botanico di Pisa mediante la tecnica SPME in GC-MS Relatore Candidata Dott. Guido Flamini Roberta Ascrizzi Correlatrice Dott.ssa Lucia Amadei Anno Accademico 2013-2014 Ai miei genitori. Riassunto Trenta specie del genere Salvia, facenti parte di una collezione dell’Orto Botanico di Pisa, sono state analizzate in vivo tramite la tecnica della Head-Space Solid Phase Micro-Extraction (HS- SPME) abbinata alla GC-MS (gas-cromatografia accoppiata alla spettrometria di massa). Sono stati identificati oltre 300 composti organici volatili (VOC). Il profilo di emissione di tali composti è stato sottoposto ad analisi statistica mediante il clustering gerarchico, effettuato sia sui singoli VOC, sia sulle classi chimiche dei composti. È emersa una discreta correlazione tra le similitudini rilevate dal clustering gerarchico e la provenienza geografica delle specie raccolte. In ragione dell’habitat originario delle diverse specie, infatti, il profilo di emissione in vivo dei VOC muta: piante provenienti da una stessa area geografica tendono ad avere pattern di emissione simili tra loro, sia in termini di prevalenza di composti individuali sia di classi chimiche. Non ho rintracciato nella letteratura studi effettuati su un numero così esteso di Salvie, né studi sulle emissioni volatili spontanee da parte di campioni analizzati in vivo, non sottoposti ad alcun trattamento di essiccamento, macinazione o distillazione. 1. DETECTION OF SELECTIVE TYROSINASE INHIBITORS FROM SOME SOUTH AFRICAN PLANT EXTRACTS OF LAMIACEAE FAMILY By Ninon Geornest Eudes Ronauld ETSASSALA A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science Department of Chemistry Faculty of Natural Sciences University of the Western Cape Supervisor: Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Co-supervisor: Prof. Emmanuel Iwuoha AUGUST 2016 ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Various dermatological disorders, such as formation of black pigmented patches on the surface of the skin arise from the over-activity of tyrosinase enzyme’s degenerative action. This enzyme is further implicated in the involvement of melanin in malignant melanoma, the most life- threatening skin tumors. Although, synthetic products were found effective to combat this menace, nevertheless, overtime detrimental effect on human skin is a challenge. Investigation of natural tyrosinase inhibitors from methanol extracts of medicinal plants of Lamiaceae family using L-tyrosine as substrate on three different complementary assays (TLC bio-autography, spectrophotometry and cyclic voltammetry) was carried out accordingly. The result indicated Salvia chamelaeagnea, Salvia dolomitica, Plectranthus ecklonii, Plectranthus namaensis, and Plectranthus zuluensis, with significant zone of inhibition against tyrosinase on TLC bio-autography, spectrophotometry result showed that extracts of Plectranthus ecklonii (IC50 = 21.58 휇g/mL), Plectranthus zuluensis (IC50 = 23.99 휇g/mL), Plectranthus madagascariensis (IC50 = 23.99 휇g/mL) and Salvia lanceolata (IC50 = 28.83) demonstrated good anti-tyrosinase activity when compared with kojic acid (IC50 = 3.607 μg/mL). On the other hand, cyclic voltammetry are in consonant with above results thereby supported the nomination of some of the extracts as strong anti-tyrosinase agents. -

1 Chapter 4 Phytomorph and Geomorph Identification © This Chapter is based on three published works: (1) a paper by Hugh O Neall (1944) that identifies two New World plants (sunflower and chili peppers) in the Voynich manuscript; (2) a paper of Tucker and Talbert (2013) which identified 39 plants in the Voynich as indigenous to the New World; (3) a paper by Tucker and Janick (2016) which extended the list to 59 species. Although many of the illustrations of the Voynich Codex on first blush could be considered bizarre or whimsical (See Figure in Chapter 14) most contain morphological structures which permit botanical identification. Many enthusiasts have attempted to analyze the plants of the Voynich Codex, but few are knowledgeable plant taxonomists or botanists, despite their large web presence. Most of the plant identification has been predicated on the conclusion that the Voynich is a 15th century European manuscript (Friedman 1962). The principal reports in a web report by non botanists Edith and Erica Sherwood (http:www.edithsherwood.comn/coyhnich_botanical_plants) who identifies he plants as Mediterranean based on their premise that Voynich is a 15th century Italian manuscript and claims to find signature of Leonardo da Vinci in voynich drawings. We respectfully disagree with both assertions. The first exception to the conclusion that the Voynich plants were European is a short remarkable 1944 paper in Speculum (a refereed journal of the Medieval Academy of America) by the distinguished plant taxonomist, the Rev./Dr. Hugh O’Neill (1894–1969), former Director of the Herbarium (official acronym LCU) at the Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington, D.C.
