  • Fictional Reality and the Portrayal of Justice in Modern Sociology and Contemporary Novels
Free Inquiry In Creative Sociology Volume 34 NO.2 November 2006 133 FICTIONAL REALITY AND THE PORTRAYAL OF JUSTICE IN MODERN SOCIOLOGY AND CONTEMPORARY NOVELS Ralph G. O'Sullivan, Chillicothe, IL ABSTRACT Social justice is a popular subject of discussion in sociology, politics, jurisprudence, as well as popular novels. The outcomes of its proceedings are equally curious because that which is "'just" depends upon such variables as defining the direction that justice needs to take; allocating authority to enforce it; and public reaction to its consequences. This article represents a layered investigative journey into the portrayal of justice in nine popular series novels because its fictional enactment represents the way that the population would like to see it enforced, but does not. Since the body of the material reviewed here are works of fiction which incorporate known data a new expression is offered. Fictional reality refers to the ways in which novelists weave fair knowledge about modern justice into stories which please their audiences, and this article explores the means by which that melding occurs. "You want justice done, you got to get it search for truth that the author shares" writes yourself. Eleven of fourteen coprolite specimens showed good pollen preservation, acceptable pollen concentration, and diversity of both arboreal and herbaceous taxa, together with a number of non-pollen palynomorph types, especially fungal spores. Radiocarbon dating suggests that the coprolite collection derives from badger colonies that established setts and latrines inside the cavern over the last three centuries. The coprolite pollen record depicts a mosaic, anthropogenic landscape very similar to the present-day, comprising pine forests, Quercus-dominated formations, woodland patches with Juniperus thurifera, and a Cistaceae- dominated understorey with heliophytes and nitrophilous assemblages. Although influential, dietary behavior of the badgers does not preclude palaeoenvironmental

Volume XXIX October 1977 CONTENTS Analyzing Ossuary Skeletal Remanins: Techniques and Problems .. ................. .. .. .... Homes Hogue Analyzing Ossuary Skeletal Remains: Techniques and Problems Homes Hogue In southeastern North Carolina the remains of what could have been os suary burial practices have been observed since the late 1800s. An ossuary burial is generally defined by Douglas Ubelaker as "the collective, secon dary deposit of skeletal material representing individuals initially stored elsewhere" (Ubelaker 1974:8). The primary burial of bones was ac complished in a number of ways. The Choctaws, according to Romans, practiced "bone-cleaning," an act by which the flesh was actually picked from the bones. The Algonquians placed the bodies of the deceased on scaf folds or buried them in the ground until the flesh had decomposed (Ubelaker 1974:8-9). In any event, the bones void of flesh were gathered after a culturally determined length of time and redeposited in one place. This place is what is referred to as an ossuary. In 1884 J. A. Holmes examined "burial mounds" in Duplin, Sampson, Robeson, Cumberland, and southern Wake counties. He observed that the burial mounds had certain common characteristics . they are usually low, rarely rising to more than three feet above the surrounding surface, with circular bases varying in diameter from 15 to 40 feet, and they contain little more than the bones of human (presumably Indian) skeletons arranged in no special order. They have been generally built on somewhat elevated, dry, sandy places, out of a soil similar to that by which they are surrounded ... In the process of burial, the bones or bodies seem to have been laid on the surface or above and covered with soil taken from the vicinity of the mound.

OFFICE OF THE PROSECUTING ATTORNEY ERIC M. HOFFMAN, PROSECUTOR 46TH JUDICIAL CIRCUIT DELAWARE COUNTY, INDIANA _____________________________________________________________________________________ 100 W. MAIN STREET, ROOM 312 TELEPHONE 765-747-7801 MUNCIE, IN 47305 FAX: 765-747-7830 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE From: Eric Hoffman, Prosecuting Attorney Date: July 6, 2020 Sarah Styhl Pleads Guilty as Charged to Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Death Muncie Indiana – On June 8 2019, Sarah Styhl was arrested by Investigator Amoreena Kesler of the Muncie Police Department for the offense of Neglect of a Defendant Resulting in Death, a Level 1 Felony. On June 10, 2019, Delaware County Circuit Court No. 3 Judge Linda Ralu Wolf found that probable cause existed for said arrest. On June 11, 2019, I formally charged Sara Styhl with two counts of Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Death, a Level 1 Felony. Both counts allege the neglect and death of the same child; they are simply alternate methods to charge and prove the crime. Even if convicted of both counts at trial, judgment of conviction could only be entered and the Defendant sentenced on one of the counts. On today’s date, Sarah Styhl pled guilty as charged to Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Death, a Level 1 Felony. The charge was not reduced nor did the State agree to place any sentencing limitations on the court. During the hearing, Styhl admitted, among other things, that she knew her three (3) month old daughter had broken bones and burns on her skin, that she failed to seek medical care for those injuries, and that those injuries resulted in the child’s death.

  • How I Set up My Own Body Farm by Jennifer Dean
How I Set Up My Own Body Farm By Jennifer Dean To prepare for a new forensic science elective at Camas High School, and determined to make this new course an exciting application of biology and chemistry principles, I began by collecting forensic science resources, ordering books and enrolling in the local community college course on forensic science. I spent every extra hour soaking up as much as I could about this field during the “time off” teachers get in the summer. I was particularly fascinated by the fields of forensic entomology and anthropology. From books such as Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach and Dr. Bill Bass’s work around the creation of a human body farm at the University of Tennessee Forensic Anthropology Center, I decided to create something similar for our new high school forensic science program. As we met for dinner after a day of revitalizing workshops in Seattle at an NSTA conference, I shared my thoughts about the creation of an animal body farm with my talented and dedicated colleagues. These teachers have a passion for their students and their work. I felt free to share these ideas with them and know I’d be supported in making it a reality. As the Science Department, we formally agreed to dedicate ourselves to submitting grants to make it a reality. Back at work, I sent copies of the farm proposal to my immediate supervisors, and they responded with letters of support. The next step was getting the farm started—with or without grant money—because the first class of forensic science would be starting in the fall.
