Dog Name: Bones Number: 615 Coat: Black and White Eyes: Blue Dog Name: Bones Number: 615 Age: 1½ Years (DoB 8/2014 est.) Sex: Male Coat: Black and White Eyes: Blue Intake: 1/9/2016 Bones is a typical young, high energy Husky boy. Prior to SHRF he was in a shelter where he was very nervous and uneasy, but very friendly with the staff from whom he would seek attention at any opportunity. He is quite the talker when looking for attention or when he wants something, including visiting with other dogs, and he makes sure you know it. In his foster home Bones has shown to have an outgoing personality. He is not shy or scared of anything. He gets along well with other dogs. Bones is possessive of his food bowl so we recommend caution when food is around and once he’s finished eating (which doesn’t take long) pick up his bowl and put it away. It helps to feed him separately from any other dogs in the house. This is something his new owner will need to continue to work on with him until he learns no one is going to steal his food. The humans need to establish themselves as the alphas of the home. Bones will settle down and relax when you pet him, especially belly rubs. He has made progress in his foster home and will now bring his food bowl to them when he is hungry. He will also sit and wait for a treat, taking it gently from your hand. Bones walks well on lead. Bones is healthy, Heartworm negative, housebroken, neutered, up-to-date on vaccines, and microchipped. This boy is still young enough for a willing adopter to turn into an affectionate, lifelong companion; make him yours and fill out an adoption application on our website, www.siberrescue.com , today. .

Volume XXIX October 1977 CONTENTS Analyzing Ossuary Skeletal Remanins: Techniques and Problems .. ................. .. .. .... Homes Hogue Analyzing Ossuary Skeletal Remains: Techniques and Problems Homes Hogue In southeastern North Carolina the remains of what could have been os suary burial practices have been observed since the late 1800s. An ossuary burial is generally defined by Douglas Ubelaker as "the collective, secon dary deposit of skeletal material representing individuals initially stored elsewhere" (Ubelaker 1974:8). The primary burial of bones was ac complished in a number of ways. The Choctaws, according to Romans, practiced "bone-cleaning," an act by which the flesh was actually picked from the bones. The Algonquians placed the bodies of the deceased on scaf folds or buried them in the ground until the flesh had decomposed (Ubelaker 1974:8-9). In any event, the bones void of flesh were gathered after a culturally determined length of time and redeposited in one place. This place is what is referred to as an ossuary. In 1884 J. A. Holmes examined "burial mounds" in Duplin, Sampson, Robeson, Cumberland, and southern Wake counties. He observed that the burial mounds had certain common characteristics . they are usually low, rarely rising to more than three feet above the surrounding surface, with circular bases varying in diameter from 15 to 40 feet, and they contain little more than the bones of human (presumably Indian) skeletons arranged in no special order. They have been generally built on somewhat elevated, dry, sandy places, out of a soil similar to that by which they are surrounded ... In the process of burial, the bones or bodies seem to have been laid on the surface or above and covered with soil taken from the vicinity of the mound.

  • Internal Microdosimetry of Alpha-Emitting Radionuclides
Radiation and Environmental Biophysics (2020) 59:29–62 https://doi.org/10.1007/s00411-019-00826-w REVIEW Internal microdosimetry of alpha‑emitting radionuclides Werner Hofmann1 · Wei Bo Li2 · Werner Friedland2 · Brian W. Miller3,4 · Balázs Madas5 · Manuel Bardiès6 · Imre Balásházy5 Received: 8 February 2019 / Accepted: 8 December 2019 / Published online: 21 December 2019 © The Author(s) 2019 Abstract At the tissue level, energy deposition in cells is determined by the microdistribution of alpha-emitting radionuclides in rela- tion to sensitive target cells. Furthermore, the highly localized energy deposition of alpha particle tracks and the limited range of alpha particles in tissue produce a highly inhomogeneous energy deposition in traversed cell nuclei. Thus, energy deposition in cell nuclei in a given tissue is characterized by the probability of alpha particle hits and, in the case of a hit, by the energy deposited there. In classical microdosimetry, the randomness of energy deposition in cellular sites is described by a stochastic quantity, the specifc energy, which approximates the macroscopic dose for a sufciently large number of energy deposition events. Typical examples of the alpha-emitting radionuclides in internal microdosimetry are radon progeny and plutonium in the lungs, plutonium and americium in bones, and radium in targeted radionuclide therapy. Several microdo- simetric approaches have been proposed to relate specifc energy distributions to radiobiological efects, such as hit-related concepts, LET and track length-based models, efect-specifc interpretations of specifc energy distributions, such as the dual radiation action theory or the hit-size efectiveness function, and fnally track structure models. Since microdosimetry characterizes only the initial step of energy deposition, microdosimetric concepts are most successful in exposure situations where biological efects are dominated by energy deposition, but not by subsequently operating biological mechanisms.

Pamela J. Cross1* and Richard Wright2 *1Archaeological Sciences, University of Bradford, Bradford UK, [email protected] 2Emeritus Professor of Anthropology, University of Sydney, Australia Abstract American celebrity aviator Amelia Earhart was lost over the Pacific Ocean during her press-making 1937 round-the-world flight. The iconic woman pilot remains a media interest nearly 80 years after her disappearance, with perennial claims of finds pinpointing her location. Though no sign of the celebrity pilot or her plane have been definitively identified, possible skeletal remains have been attributed to Earhart. The partial skeleton recovered and investigated by British officials in 1940. Their investigation concluded the remains were those of a stocky, middle-aged male. A private historic group re- evaluated the British analysis in 1998 as part of research to establish Gardner (Nikumaroro) Island as the crash site. The 1998 report discredited the British conclusions and used cranial analysis software (FORDISC) results to suggest the skeleton was potentially a Northern European woman, and consistent with Amelia Earhart.

  • Bones, Chalk and Cheese
Bones, Chalk and Cheese The pilot of the series Bones, from 2005, is a clear example of two characters who not only have distinctive voices, but are from different metaphorical planets. The show proved to be extremely successful and durable for Fox; it ran for twelve seasons, ending in 2017. When Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan (Emily Deschanel) talk to each other, it’s clear that one is from Mars and the other from Venus—but the stereotypical roles have been reversed. Brennan is scientific and technical; she has no idea about anything to do with pop culture at all. He’s exactly the opposite. I remember watching the excellent pilot (written by Hart Hanson, the showrunner) and noticing that whenever anybody says something that has any reference to pop culture, Brennan says, “I don't know what that means.” It’s a brilliant, deadpan catch phrase, and what’s fun about it is that she really doesn’t. She is so hyper-focused on being a forensic anthropologist that it’s all she really knows. She’s not connected to her emotional life and doesn’t understand humor —there’s an element of her that’s almost autistic. She lives in the world yet doesn’t really notice and participate in slang and cultural references as most of us tend to do. So Brennan’s distinctive voice is out of step and out of time. !1 Brennan and Booth are also out of step with each other—although she doesn't understand pop culture, he does. He’s street smart and has a lot of bravado and swagger, and she’s restrained, scientific and kind of emotionally shut down.
