  • CHORAL PROBLEMS in HANDEL's MESSIAH THESIS Presented to The
*141 CHORAL PROBLEMS IN HANDEL'S MESSIAH THESIS Presented to the Graduate Council of the North Texas State University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of MASTER OF MUSIC By John J. Williams, B. M. Ed. Denton, Texas May, 1968 PREFACE Music of the Baroque era can be best perceived through a detailed study of the elements with which it is constructed. Through the analysis of melodic characteristics, rhythmic characteristics, harmonic characteristics, textural charac- teristics, and formal characteristics, many choral problems related directly to performance practices in the Baroque era may be solved. It certainly cannot be denied that there is a wealth of information written about Handel's Messiah and that readers glancing at this subject might ask, "What is there new to say about Messiah?" or possibly, "I've conducted Messiah so many times that there is absolutely nothing I don't know about it." Familiarity with the work is not sufficient to produce a performance, for when it is executed in this fashion, it becomes merely a convention rather than a carefully pre- pared piece of music. Although the oratorio has retained its popularity for over a hundred years, it is rarely heard as Handel himself performed it. Several editions of the score exist, with changes made by the composer to suit individual soloists or performance conditions. iii The edition chosen for analysis in this study is the one which Handel directed at the Foundling Hospital in London on May 15, 1754. It is version number four of the vocal score published in 1959 by Novello and Company, Limited, London, as edited by Watkins Shaw, based on sets of parts belonging to the Thomas Coram Foundation (The Foundling Hospital).

Murder Upon Murder Patricia Rose McKown Schuelke Primary Thesis Sponsor Dr. Elissa Harbert First Reader Dr. Andrea Sununu Second Reader Dr. Kerry Jennings DePauw University Honor Scholar Program Class of 2020 Acknowledgement and Dedication Thank you to my committee, Dr. Elissa Harbert, Dr. Andrea Sununu, and Dr. Kerry Jennings, my cast and crew, Suzette Hartsfield, Noelle Johnson, Genevieve Miedema, Serenna Jones, Anna Roth, Melanie Roma, Jonathon Tebbe, Sarah Hennessy, and Eric Boylan, my family, and Jules Shinkle for your support. This is dedicated to you. 1 Table of Contents Creative Statement…………………………. 3 Murder Upon Murder: live version……….. 21 Murder Upon Murder: remote version…… 75 2 Creative Statement Introduction Writing and producing this play became a much more intense experience than I ever expected. I first conceptualized the project last spring as a traditional academic thesis that would cover popular culture’s fascination with murder ballads through lenses I discovered in my Honor Scholar classes like human evolution and religion. This summer, I realized I wanted to reach a general audience with the project and that I wanted to work in public musicology as a career. My 2019 play Somber and Wild interested an audience outside the School of Music and even outside of DePauw, so I felt confident that a play could attract the audience I wanted to entertain and educate. When fall came, it was clear that a play would suit my artistic and career goals better than a traditional paper. “Down in the Willow Garden” from Mike Block’s album Final Night at Camp was the first murder ballad that I ever noticed.

  • Jo April 2019.PPP
An alphabetical listing of her studio recordings, including recording dates, matrix numbers and, when known, dates first issued. Compiled by Jim Marshall, and updated April 2019 I first produced a Jo Stafford discography ‘way back in 1995, encouraged by the late Tom Colborn who probably knew more about Jo’s career than the lady herself. Tom had already done much of the groundwork and, knowing that I’d acquired a computer - an early Amstrad - suggested that I take over the task. I was well into my research when the indispensable "In Tune" magazine started publishing its own in-depth listing of Jo’s huge catalogue of recordings. The work put into that by Brian Henson, Colin Morgan, Robert W. Rice and others was an immeasurable help. My thanks also go to Ken Seavor, John Ridgeway, Lucas Tuinstra, Jeff Lasbury and Ray Purslow plus, of course Jo Stafford and Paul Weston , all of whom contributed to Tom’s original research. More recently I’ve had important help from Michel Ruppli, Tim Weston, Robert Rice, Richard Weize and Adam Daff resulting in what I like to think is an almost “complete" alphabetical listing of Jo’s commercial recordings, including her work with the Pied Pipers and her alter egos, Cinderella G. Stump and Darlene Edwards, not forgetting Jonathan! (Apologies if I’ve forgotten anyone!) Apart from a handful of never-ever issued Capitol and Columbia tracks, almost all Jo’s studio recordings seem to have been reissued on CD and are probably still in print. In fact, the seemingly relentless reissue of Stafford CDs, mainly in the UK, is proof, if proof was needed, of the lady’s long-lasting popularity.

The Banks of Ohio 3:32 Chorus: I asked my love to take a walk, I took her by her lily-white hand, Just to walk a little way, I led her down where the waters stand. And as we walked and as we talked I picked her up and pitched her in, Of our golden wedding day. And watched her as she floated down. Chorus: Chorus: Then only say that you'll be mine, In no other arms you'll find. I started back home twixt twelve and one, Down beside where the waters flow, Crying, "My God! What have I done - On the banks of the Ohio. I've murdered the only woman I love Because she would not be my bride." I drew a sword across her breast, Gently in my arms she pressed, Chorus: Crying, "Willie, Oh Willie, don't you murder me, For I'm unprepared for eternity!" www.folkways.si.edu 2. You are My Sunshine 1:46 Chorus: J. H. Davis-C. Mitchell Oh, springtime has come You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, We're just out of jail, You make me happy when skies are gray. Without any money, You'll never know, dear, how much I love you, Without any bail. Please don't take my sunshine away. Chorus: The other night, dear, as I lay sleeping, I dreamt I held you in my arms. 4. The Foggy Dew 1:59 When I awoke, dear, I was mistaken, And I hung my head and cried.

A philosophy, calendar, and sequential skills chart precede the main body of the handbook which first outlines the elementary program (grades K-6), a general and instrumental program. Details of this program, as for all levels, describe the basic instructional program, scheduling, and supplementary activities. The junior high school program (grades 7-9) also includes general music and instrumental music, but expands into choral, band, 'and orchestra activities. The senior high program (grades 10-12) introduces music appreciation, black music, history of music, piano, organ, humanities, and music theory in addition to existing choral and instrumental programs. Special programs at the high school level are a comprehensive musicianship program and a related arts program. Each course is outlined in a statement of course content, terminal performance objectives, enabling Objectives, and teaching suggestions. (KSM) I t.)
