A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of George Balanchine’s most enchanting and endearing works. His choreography weaves through Shakespeare’s play—with its mixed-up lovers, royal SAN FRANCISCO BALLET quarrels, and fairy antics—so brilliantly that the dance seamlessly propels the narrative forward. I’m thrilled to bring this ballet back AUXILIARY FASHION SHOW to the Opera House stage after a 30+ year absence. Bringing Midsummer back gives a new generation of dancers an opportunity to dance these wonderful, challenging roles. I loved MAISON RABIH KAYROUZ dancing Midsummer when I was a member of New York City Ballet, and I’ve enjoyed being in the studios as the dancers rehearse it. HAUTE COUTURE I’ve passed along some of the details that Mr. B shared with me: a certain way of doing steps, how you stand, what a gesture WEDNESDAY, MARCH 18, 2020 should be. at Saint Joseph’s Arts Society As magical as the storytelling of the first act is, the pure dance Presented by Sam Malouf Authentic Luxury of the second act is some of Balanchine’s finest choreography. The experience stayed with him throughout his life—decades later he still delighted in reciting lines of the initiatives, including new works, scholarships for San Francisco play in Russian. PROGRAM 04 | 415-865-2000 | 19 PROGRAM NOTES by Caitlin Sims in movement alone, particularly for a choreographer who had won widespread acclaim for his abstract, plotless ballets. And yet, the “The course of true love never did run smooth,” laments Lysander in genius of Balanchine’s Midsummer is that he makes entirely clear a A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In Shakespeare’s comedy, an evening of complex tangle of relationships among feuding fairies and mismatched mischief, merriment, and mismatched couples reaches a pinnacle when mortals crossing paths in a moonlit forest. “I think Balanchine did such the fairy queen Titania falls madly in love—with an actor with the head of a superb job with Midsummer,” says Artistic Director and Principal a donkey. It’s enchantment as revenge by the fairy king Oberon. The Choreographer Helgi Tomasson, who danced in Midsummer with New mishaps accelerate when the realms of fairies and mortals intersect in York City Ballet. “It has humor. It has suspense. It has love. And even if you the forest after dark. Oberon and his servant Puck’s attempts to simplify are not a ballet aficionado, you immediately understand what’s going on.” the tangled relationships of two human couples only creates more misunderstanding. In Balanchine’s creation, Shakespeare’s five-act play is condensed into two acts, the first of which contains all of the narrative. The second act CREATING BALANCHINE'S MIDSUMMER effectively replaces the “play within a play” with a “ballet within a ballet” in the court of the Duke of Athens. It’s a triple wedding celebration (for As a child, George Balanchine played the role of an elf in a production of the two sets of lovers; plus Theseus, the Duke of Athens, and his bride the play at the Mikhailovsky Theater in St. Petersburg. The text stayed Hippolyta, the Queen of the Amazons), a display of pure dance. The first with him; decades later he would recite in Russian, “I know a bank where act illuminates the many ways love can be distorted and derailed, while the wild thyme blows / Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows.” the second act pays tribute—particularly in a tender, sublime pas de Balanchine considered creating a production of Midsummer for years deux—to the vision of an ideal partnership. before he actually created his two-act ballet in 1962. It was his second full-length story ballet (Nutcracker was first) and the first wholly original MIDSUMMER IN SAN FRANCISCO full-length ballet he had choreographed in America. SF Ballet’s first Midsummer was, appropriately, danced alfresco. For For Balanchine, the biggest inspiration for—and obstacle to—a full- the Company’s 1940 appearance at the Stern Grove Festival, Director length Midsummer Night’s Dream had been the score. The next taste of Midsummer Mendelssohn had composed music for A Midsummer Night’s Dream in was a pas de deux from Sir Frederick Ashton’s The Dream, which was two parts. After reading the play at age 17, he wrote a concert overture, danced here starting in 1982. Balanchine’s Midsummer opened at SF a shimmering work capturing the magic and whimsy of the play in music. Ballet in 1985, just as Helgi Tomasson was arriving in San Francisco as Sixteen years later, King Frederick William IV of Prussia commissioned the Company’s new artistic director. The ensuing gap in performances Mendelssohn to expand upon this for Ludwig Tieck’s production of was due to a practical rather than an artistic constraint: SF Ballet didn’t the play. Mendelssohn wrote incidental music that included songs (“Ye have a suitable production. When Martin Pakledinaz, who designed spotted snakes”), melodramas (text spoken over music), and purely SF Ballet’s Nutcracker and Don Quixote, designed a Midsummer orchestral music such as the well-known Wedding March.

“Balanchine took time to find all the perfect pieces of music that would weave the ballet together musically,” explains Balanchine Trust répétiteur Sandra Jennings, who staged Midsummer on San Francisco Ballet. His knowledge of music was exceptional for a choreographer; the son of a composer, he grew up playing the piano and studied music theory and piano at the Petrograd Conservatory of Music while dancing in the Mariinsky Ballet. In assembling a score for Midsummer, Balanchine drew from several other Mendelssohn works: overtures to Athalie, The Fair Mesuline, and The First Walpurgis Night for the first act, and Symphony No. 9 and the overture to Son and Stranger in the second act.

MANIFESTING MIDSUMMER THROUGH MOVEMENT

Balanchine believed that when the curtain goes up, audience members should be able to easily grasp both narrative and character relationships. FELIX MENDELSSOHN Composer

Felix Mendelssohn(-Bartholdy) (1809–47) was a German conductor and composer of the Romantic period. Born in Hamburg, Germany, Mendelssohn and his siblings were musical from an early age. He performed publicly for the first time at age nine and composed many of his most beloved works—including the A Midsummer Night’s Dream concert overture—before the age of 20. Mendelssohn’s music is more conservative in structure and style than many of his contemporaries; he looked to build upon the legacy of past master composers such as rather than use more radical techniques. The complete list of Mendelssohn’s works includes five orchestral and 12 string symphonies, as well as numerous piano and voice compositions, oratorios, concertos, and the melody for “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.”

[ INSTANT EXPERT >> A KITTEN NAMED BOTTOM ] Suzanne Farrell, a former New York City Ballet dancer and Balanchine muse, danced the role of Titania onstage and in a 1966 film of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In her autobiography Holding on to the Air, Farrell recalls that when she had trouble finding the “playful affection” that Balanchine was looking for in her interaction with donkey-headed Bottom, he demonstrated it himself: “He was so wonderful, scratching Bottom under the chin, crowning one long donkey ear with a garland, showing Bottom how to partner his precious cargo, and bourréeing across the studio, pulling Bottom behind.” When Farrell continued to struggle, Balanchine, exasperated, asked if she had a pet at home from which she could draw inspiration. She did not, but adopted one on the way home from rehearsal, naming her new kitten “Bottom.”

Leveraging decades of operational expertise, Innovation Global Capital builds disruptive, early stage companies leading the digital transformation of the economy. Yasunobu Kyogoku, founder of Innovation Global Capital, has been a San Francisco Ballet Trustee since 2014. SF Ballet would like to extend a special acknowledgement to Yasunobu and his wife, Reiko Kyogoku, for their generous commitment and support over the years. “San Francisco Ballet’s commitment to global excellence and pushing the creative envelope with innovative pieces directly reflect the values we cherish at Innovation Global Capital,” Yasunobu says. “We are honored to invest in this world-renowned company helping to anchor the San Francisco community.”

MAKING A GIFT USING YOUR IRA Donors to San Francisco Ballet who use IRA distributions to make gifts to the annual fund not only offer valuable support for institutional operations, but are also entitled to enjoy non-taxable membership benefits for their gift. If you are 70½ or older, you can make a tax-deductible distribution from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA). The IRA charitable rollover, first enacted in 2006, has resulted in millions of dollars of charitable gifts that would not otherwise have been made. Recent tax law updates passed through the Secure Act in late 2019 have increased the age when IRA owners must take a required minimum distribution to 72. This means that though you can still make a gift at 70½ using your IRA, the additional benefit of the rollover amount not impacting your adjusted gross income is not applicable unless you are 72. This creates a one- to-two-year window in which IRA distributions qualify as charitable contributions, but not as required minimum distributions.

Please join us as we celebrate Yuan Yuan Tan’s 25th anniversary with San Francisco Ballet. Following the matinee performance of Jewels—during which Tan will dance the lead role in Diamonds—a reception and dinner will be held at the Palace Hotel.

PROGRAM 04 | 415-865-2000 | 53 JOCELYN VOLLMAR LEGACY CIRCLE

Your estate gift to SF Ballet puts you in very special company: the Jocelyn Vollmar Legacy Circle. Jocelyn Vollmar’s career extended from performing roles in SF Ballet’s first Nutcracker and Swan Lake to training generations of dancers in SF Ballet School. We created the Jocelyn Vollmar Legacy Circle to recognize and thank those individuals who, as a part of their own legacy, make an investment in the future of SF Ballet. Members gain special insight into SF Ballet and the creative process of dance through an annual celebratory luncheon and other behind-the-scenes events. Legacy gifts come in all sizes and include gifts from wills and living trusts; gifts that return lifetime income, such as charitable gift annuities; our pooled income fund; and other planned gifts. For information about Legacy Circle membership and estate gift options, please contact Elizabeth Lani, Deputy Director of Development/Planned Giving, at [email protected] or 415-865-6623.

PROGRAM 04 | SFBALLET.ORG | 63 DESIGNING A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM

When the Balanchine Trust, which has stylistic approval of all Balanchine BALANCHINE productions, allowed A Midsummer Night’s Dream to be redesigned in 1997, AND THE BARD Pacific Northwest Ballet turned to Martin Pakledinaz. A set and costume designer who is well-known to SF Ballet audiences (Don Quixote, Nutcracker), COME TO Pakledinaz drew inspiration for the beloved story ballet from his surroundings. He tailored the production to the Pacific coast, adding local flora and fauna, THE BAY AREA hanging fog, conch shells, and even a 12-foot spider.

Pakledinaz’s vision started a trend for Midsummer productions with a similar local focus. Couturier Christian Lacroix designed opulent costumes—featuring Sophie Hallette lace and Swarovski crystals—for Paris Opera Ballet’s 2017 production. And artist Michele Oka Doner designed a new production for Miami City Ballet that’s set under the sea, with seahorses and the character of Bottom transformed not into a donkey, but a manatee.

64 | SAN FRANCISCO BALLET | PROGRAM 04 YOUR LEGACY, THE FUTURE OF BALLET

JOAN KWANSA “I first got involved with San Francisco Ballet as an usher and subscriber. As a BRAVO (Ballet Resource and Volunteer Organization) member—45 years and counting!—I have done just about every job— from chaperoning children during Nutcracker, working in the office, helping at events, and, my favorite, serving as a supernumerary. Over time, I have played my fair share of nuns and chestnut ladies in ballet productions. I have enjoyed the ballet so much, I really feel it’s important to have this beautiful art form live on for future audiences to enjoy. This is why I have included the Ballet in my plans.”

For information about bequests, charitable gift annuities, and other estate gift options, contact Elizabeth Lani in SF Ballet’s planned giving office at 415-865-6623 or [email protected]. Patrons who include the Ballet in their will or other estate plans are welcomed to membership in The Jocelyn Vollmar Legacy Circle and celebrated as essential members of the Ballet family.
