The main purpose of this study is to provide information that will be useful to those engaged in explor­ ation for new talc and chlorite deposits. For that reason, mapping of areas that were thought most likely to contain talc was emphasized, as was the mapping and examination of talc prospects and inactive mines that have not been de­ scribed in the literature. In an effort to make this publication more useful to the individual unfamiliaf with talc and chlorite in Montana, published information on all known talc occurrences is also included in abbreviated form. The contributions of the following field assistants were important to the completion of the project and are much appreciated: Will Goldberg (1973t,.Hal Koechlein (1974), Roger Kuhns (1975), Leroy Swanson (1976) and Steve Czehura for a short time in 1977. I enjoyed working with each of them. Sam Maloney, Pete Womack and Bob Nolte were very helpful in shoWing us talc prospects. Ken Wier showed interest in our work in the Greenhorn Range and offered sug­ gestions for the improvement of the geologic map of that area. Review of the manuscript by Keith Papke and Willis Johns resulted in many improvements. Alice Blount of the Newark Museum, Newark, New Jersey, ran infrared scans on samples of stream sediment and soil. She, Bob Root, Dick Olson, Ed Houser and John Brady also provided me with an opportunity to discuss my ideas on the origin of Montana talc deposits. Charles Knowles of the Idaho Bureau of Mines and Geology kindly ran microprobe scans of a talc specimen in an effort to determine the composition of some very small opaque grains. Individuals involved with the operating talc mines showed us their opera­ tions, and perhaps most important, expressed interest in our work. Summary: Outcrops of phyllosilicates and small sites of less common aqueous alteration minerals were mapped at Tyrrhena Terra on Mars using CRISM pa- rameters, and CRISM spectral data were collected to more closely analyze the mineralogy in this region. Fe- and Mg-rich smectite and chlorite group phyllosilicates are both detected at Tyrrhena Terra, including sapo- nite, chamosite, and clinochlore. Zeolites and car- bonates are among the rarer alteration minerals also observed at Tyrrhena Terra that further constrain the alteration history in this region. More chlorite than smectite is observed, indicating higher temperature alteration processes occurred at Tyrrhena Terra. Introduction: Tyrrhena Terra is a region in the southern hemisphere of Mars, between the Isidis and Hellas impact basins and south of Libya Montes. The selected study site (Fig. 1) is of particular interest be- cause it has a large concentration of phyllosilicate minerals exposed on the surface, among small outcrops of rarer aqueous alteration minerals [1]. Phyllosilicates are a crucial mineral group to study when striving to understand the aqueous alteration history of a region. Less common aqueous alteration minerals, including zeolite, carbonate, and hydrated sulfates, are also im- portant to further constrain the alteration history of a region [2]. For this research project, we focused pri- marily on identifying the phyllosilicate minerals smec- tite and chlorite.

The conservation easements would be acquired using Land and Water Conservation Funds (LWCF) appropriations for the Henrys Lake Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) project. The property is a private inholding within the Henrys Lake ACEC designation, an area containing one of the most unique and biologically diverse ecosystems in Idaho, and an active water-based recreation program. The property is bordered to the north and west by Forest Service lands and is adjacent to BLM land on the northern portion of its eastern boundary. The remainder of the eastern boundary is adjacent to private land which is conserved by the Wetland Reserves Program. The two conservation easements are held by The Nature Conservancy (TNC). The first conservation easement, Empey-Johnson 1 (Duck Creek), was purchased by TNC in 2008 to protect 50 acres of the ranch.

Introduction This project was funded by the EDMAP program of the U. S. Geological Survey. Field studies, including geologic mapping and a gravity and magnetic survey, were conducted during the 2001 field season. These studies were undertaken to gain a better understanding of the geologic structure of the Ruby basin in the area of Ruby Dam in southwest Montana (Figures 1 and 2). Ruby Dam, which impounds Ruby Reservoir, lies within a seismically active region known as the Intermountain Seismic Belt. Delineation and detailed mapping of the Tertiary and Quaternary sediments has helped to understand better the occurrence of Quaternary faulting in the basin. No new faults of Quaternary age were recognized within the field area. However, a fault that offsets Quaternary deposits was newly mapped by the authors in a gravel pit two miles north of the north map boundary. This fault may change previously calculated ground acceleration values at the dam site, and may indicate a greater susceptibility of the dam to seismic activity than previously thought. The geologic map in this report combines previous work that focused on the bedrock of the area with new mapping of the Tertiary and Quaternary deposits by the present authors.

FLUID INCLUSION AND STABLE ISOTOPE INVESTIGATION OF HYDROTHERMAL TALC AND CHLORITE DEPOSITS IN SOUTHWEST MONTANA by Garrett Hill A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Geoscience Geology Option Montana Tech 2018 ii Abstract Talc and chlorite deposits of southwest Montana formed as hydrothermal replacements of Archean and/or early Proterozoic dolomitic marble and quartzo-feldspathic gneiss. Although the hydrothermal replacement model is generally accepted, less is known about the temperature, composition, and origin of the fluids involved in talc and chlorite formation. The present study examines fluid inclusions in quartz associated with both talc and chlorite, stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopes of talc, chlorite, and quartz, and stable carbon and oxygen isotopes of carbonate minerals. The deposits being examined include the Yellowstone, Beaverhead and Willow Creek talc mines, and the Antler chlorite mine.
