    March 23, 2010 Hurontario/Main Street Study Public Information Centres: LRT Identified as Preferred Option for the Corridor BRAMPTON, ON: The Cities of Brampton and Mississauga are hosting public information centres to present the findings of the joint Hurontario/Main Street Study, which identifies Light Rail Transit (LRT) as the preferred option for the corridor. The Hurontario/Main Street Study explored options for rapid transit development, land use and urban design along the corridor, which runs from Port Credit to downtown Brampton. The study is part of Metrolinx’s Regional Transportation Plan, THE BIG MOVE, that identified the corridor as one of 15 priority projects for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. (the precursor of the Mississauga ~ 7 Rememberance Heritage Foundation) was established. The new organization ~ 8 Celebrating 50 Years got right to work. Leslie Log House ~10 Meriel Simpson, HM ~11 Historical Societies One of its first success stories was the preservation of the ~12 Museum News Bradley House. Hundreds of volunteers worked long and hard to get the Bradley House back to its ~13 Say Cheese original state and on June 11th, 1966, the newly restored Bradley House opened as a museum. Other ~14 Resource Centre building restoration projects followed such as The Anchorage, which now serves as the main ~16 Heritage Matters administrative centre for Bradley House. Community outreach has always been a key component of Heritage Mississauga's programming. SPECIAL Through the years, HM has launched several lecture series with such topics as natural history, archeology, and ancestral and architectural history.

  • St. Patrick's Catholic Church
    (Nonie Wilcox) (Nonie Part Two 1851 - 1900 St. Patrick’s Catholic Church - 1856 t. Patrick’s Catholic Church’s Dixie congregation was formed by Bishop Charbonnel in 1856 and they held their first services at the Mission Church on the SFifth Line at Elmbank. Down through the years, the Mission Church would have names such as St. Bernard’s, St. Kevin’s, Sacred Heart and Elmbank, but the favourite was “The Fifth Line Church.” Father John McNulty handled the services. The first recorded marriage was on 75 October 20th of Joseph Lamphire of Burnhamthorpe to Jane Doherty of Hanlan’s Corners. The first baptism was of Thomas Hickey. The Fifth Line Church was torn St. Patrick’s Catholic Church Interior (William A. Pinkney) down in the 1930s, but its cemetery remained until THE DIXIE CATHOLICS HAD BEEN SERVED SINCE 1829 BY 2001, when the graves were the Wildfield Church in Toronto Gore Township when it got its first exhumed and moved to the resident priest. Services and other church business were held in the home of Owen Hickey, one of the first toll-gatekeepers at the four Roman Catholic Assumption corners of what would become Dixie in 1864. More Catholics had Cemetery at the southeast begun to settle here after Ireland’s potato famine of 1847. So when corner of Dixie and Tomken St. Patrick’s congregation was formed in 1856, the Fifth Line Church at Elmbank was already 27 years old.
