Your personalised e-Brochure Zante 4 Star All Inclusive eBrochure ref: PDF400123 call Not Just Travel Isle of Wight direct on 01983716727 Zakynthos Overview The Ionian island of Zakynthos (also called Zante) has been colourfully billed as 'the green island of poetry, song and love', mainly because it was the home of Dionysios Solomos, who wrote the Greek national anthem, 'The Hymn to Liberty'. Arriving in Zakynthos by ferry is certainly a poetic experience: the picturesque town curves around a bay dominated by a Venetian Fortress and the St Dennis Cathedral. Zakynthos town is reminiscent of Venice with its historic St Mark's Square and Solomos Square, lined by reconstructed neoclassical buildings. The Solomos Mausoleum is a museum dedicated to the island's aristocracy of bygone days, while the Byzantine Museum sports splendid icons and frescoes salvaged from the island's beautiful medieval churches, destroyed in the massive earthquake of 1953. The main attraction for visitors, however, is the triangular shaped island's 57 miles (92km) of coastline, particularly on the eastern and southern flanks, which are blessed with beautiful bays. Favourites are the white sandy beaches of Lagana and Geraka, also renowned for being the nesting grounds of the Caretta- Caretta sea turtles. Inland, the mountain villages lure holidaymakers away from the beach to sample some local hospitality and good food and wine, and to explore monasteries tucked away among the greenery. Tourism has become the main income earner for this popular resort island, but the rapid development of infrastructure in recent years has not depleted its traditional charm - Zakynthos remains pleasantly poetic. Entertainment Nightlife Zakynthos nightlife offers visitors a variety of entertainment including pubs, bars and nightclubs. The trendiest spots are on the south end of the island, mostly in Laganas, Argassi, Kalamaki, Tsilivi and Alykes. Q Bar in the Laganas resort has good music and even better cocktails, while Molly Malone's Irish pub in Tsilivi has big screen TVs for sport fanatics. In Argassi, Red Lion serves draft beers and shows all the latest movies. Two Brothers in Tsilivi is also very popular. Argassi's Barrage nightclub is a great place to hear some techno, house and commercial dance music, and Ghetto in Laganas has a massive sound system. Also in Laganas, sip exotic cocktails and watch the fire show at Rescue. Clubs and bars tend to come and go but there is always a variety on offer on Zakynthos and it is not hard to seek out a good time after dark. For those who would rather avoid the noise and bustle at night it is also possible to slip away from the partying crowds and enjoy a romantic meal or drink somewhere. The nightlife is good but it does not dominate the island as it does at some of the resorts, and it is possible to avoid it. Zante is therefore suitable for family holidays. Shopping Shopping in Zakynthos will not go unrewarded; the island has a vast array of goods to entice visitors. The main shopping area is Alexander Street in Zakynthos town, but there are also gift and souvenir shops at many of the holiday resorts. Usually the resort shops are rather commercial in their offerings so while they are useful for the odd item, clothes and any touristy souvenirs you may want, it is best to make an effort to buy genuine crafts from the locals or to explore the markets and stalls in the villages - where you are almost certain to get better deals as well. It is not difficult to find great local produce in Zante, which has a vibrant shopping scene. Shoppers in Zakynthos will find everything from designer labels, jewellery and leather goods to embroidery, olive wood carvings and ceramics. The most popular Zakynthos souvenirs include locally produced mandolato(nougat) and cheese. During peak summer the shopping hours are quite long and many of the shops catering to tourists don't close over lunch, but those visiting off-season may find that many of the shops and restaurants are closed or have reduced hours. Places to Visit Your personalised e-Brochure Zante 4 Star All Inclusive eBrochure ref: PDF400123 call Not Just Travel Isle of Wight direct on 01983716727 Sightseeing Zakynthos is a wonderful destination for a relaxing holiday, its main attraction being the gorgeous, unspoilt beaches and turquoise waters. The Vassilikos area has some of the best beaches, including St Nicholas and Gerakas. Loggerhead sea turtles can be seen at the National Marine Park in Laganas Bay. The Smugglers Cove Shipwreck is a must-see, as are the Blue Caves near the village of Volimes. There are many fun boat trips around the island for visits to lovely beaches and attractions like the caves and shipwreck. Another must for those who love secluded and unspoiled beaches is a visit to the remarkable Marathonisi island which is a protected environment with no touristic development as it is a breeding ground for turtles. Take your own snacks and water and enjoy a day on your own paradise island - there are some sea caves you can swim out to and a small snack boat that sometimes circles the island. Within the lush interior of Zante there are also surprises for visitors, like the small monasteries. And the town of Zakynthos is very attractive and a pleasure to stroll around. There are some good museums to investigate including the Solomos Mausoleum and the Byzantine Museum. Zante Beaches Region/City:Zakynthos Zante is renowned for unspoilt beaches and rich marine life and it is a great island for nature-lovers. The beaches on the island are also known for their beautiful emerald green water. The region of Vassilikos has some of the best beaches on the island and a favourite is St Nicholas, which has great watersports facilities. Gerakas is also very popular, voted one of Greece's best beaches. Gerakas is a long, sandy beach with lovely and unusual rock formations. Many of the holiday resorts have their own beaches for visitors to enjoy, and these are the Zante beaches with the best amenities; generally the beaches do not have restaurants and bars because their lack of development is their greatest attraction.
