Goldberg Chapter One -- Remembrance of Things Past Dr. Fong Yui Moon (AKenny@ to his friends) woke up screaming. Again. This was the third time in as many weeks. When he was a little boy, he used to wake up in the middle of the night, with his pulse pounding and his heart racing. Back then, he had never been able to remember what, exactly, he had been dreaming about that had shocked him awake. Now, however, he could remember his nightmares all too well, which wasn=t surprising given that they were always the same. That huge face snarling at him, those teeth the size of school buses, those eyes.... His mother used to tell him that just had a very active imagination, that there were no demons, no monsters. His mother had been wrong, however -- there were indeed monsters. Beside him, his wife, Julie, stirred under her covers. Kenny looked over at her, wondering for the thousandth time what he ever did to deserve a wife so wonderful. When they were first dating, a good friend had told him that if he ever met a woman who could sleep in the same bed with him and put up with his snoring, he should marry her in an instant. He wondered what his friend would say about this woman who had shared his bed for 30 years and who now put up with his screaming. Godzilla Reborn Copyright 1998 Barry S. Goldberg Kenny looked at the clock beside his bed. Only 2:43 A.M. He thought briefly of getting up anyway, but that would wake his wife up. He knew that he probably wouldn=t fall back to sleep, but he could at least spend the time going over the speech he had to give later that day. * * * Kenny woke three hours later to find the early morning sun streaming through the bedroom window, his wife missing from his side, and the heavenly aroma of bacon and eggs wafting in from the kitchen. He inhaled deeply, sighed, and then swung his legs over the side of the bed. On his way to the bathroom he called out. AHoney -- I hope you=re not planning on eating all that yourself!@ ADon=t be silly,@ came the drawl from the kitchen. ABut if you don=t hurry, I may give into temptation.@ Kenny grinned to himself as he climbed into the shower. Julie=s accent was one of the first things that attracted him to her in the first place. At just a little under five foot three inches tall, with a slender build and long black hair, Julie Hisako Nakamoto had looked like most other Asian girls he had known in his life. Her southern accent had completely thrown him for a loop, however. It was so incongruous and yet somehow so perfect at the same time. Although Julie=s parents had both immigrated from Japan, she herself had been born in Austin, Texas and had learned to speak English with a deep drawl that years of living in New York hadn=t been able to erase. Julie was standing at the stove with her back to him, and he took a moment to appreciate the view. After all these years, and after bearing him three wonderful daughters, she still had a great figure. The only real difference he could see between the woman who stood in front of him and the girl he married all those years ago was the color of her hair. When Julie started going grey a few years back, she decided to indulge in a whim and have reddish highlights added. Kenny had been a bit appalled at first, but soon came to realize that it really did suit her as much as her

    “UNTIL THAT SONG IS BORN”: AN ETHNOGRAPHIC INVESTIGATION OF TEACHING AND LEARNING AMONG COLLABORATIVE SONGWRITERS IN NASHVILLE By Stuart Chapman Hill A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Music Education—Doctor of Philosophy 2016 ABSTRACT “UNTIL THAT SONG IS BORN”: AN ETHNOGRAPHIC INVESTIGATION OF TEACHING AND LEARNING AMONG COLLABORATIVE SONGWRITERS IN NASHVILLE By Stuart Chapman Hill With the intent of informing the practice of music educators who teach songwriting in K– 12 and college/university classrooms, the purpose of this research is to examine how professional songwriters in Nashville, Tennessee—one of songwriting’s professional “hubs”—teach and learn from one another in the process of engaging in collaborative songwriting. This study viewed songwriting as a form of “situated learning” (Lave & Wenger, 1991) and “situated practice” (Folkestad, 2012) whose investigation requires consideration of the professional culture that surrounds creative activity in a specific context (i.e., Nashville). The following research questions guided this study: (1) How do collaborative songwriters describe the process of being inducted to, and learning within, the practice of professional songwriting in Nashville, (2) What teaching and learning behaviors can be identified in the collaborative songwriting processes of Nashville songwriters, and (3) Who are the important actors in the process of learning to be a collaborative songwriter in Nashville, and what roles do they play (e.g., gatekeeper, mentor, role model)? This study combined elements of case study and ethnography. Data sources included observation of co-writing sessions, interviews with songwriters, and participation in and observation of open mic and writers’ nights.

And what a year it was! The year had barely begun when we were already saying goodbye to musical heroes gone far too soon. David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Glenn Frey, Leon Russell, Maurice White, Prince, George Michael ... the list goes on. And yet, despite the sadness of these losses, there is much for the industry to celebrate. Music consumption is at an all-time high. Overall consumption of album sales, song sales and audio on-demand streaming volume is up 5% over 2015, fueled by an incredible 203% increase in on-demand audio streams, enough to offset declines in sales and return a positive year for the business. 2016 also marked the highest vinyl sales total to date. It was an incredible year for Canadian artists, at home and abroad. Eight different Canadian artists had #1 albums in 2016, led by Drake whose album Views was the biggest album of the year in Canada as well as the U.S. The Tragically Hip had two albums reach the top of the chart as well, their latest release and their 2005 best of album, and their emotional farewell concert in August was something we’ll remember for a long time. Justin Bieber, Billy Talent, Céline Dion, Shawn Mendes, Leonard Cohen and The Weeknd also spent time at #1. Break out artist Alessia Cara as well as accomplished superstar Michael Buble also enjoyed successes this year.

    Ronald Reagan’s Dallas Republic Conference Nomination Acceptance Speech By Andrew Roberts On August 23, 1984, Ronald Reagan accepted the Republican party’s nomination as candidate for president in an extremely well-crafted speech that even today, three-and-a-half decades later, has the power to inspire for its sentiments and to impress for its hard-hitting arguments. Yet perhaps because it was a blatantly electioneering speech, historians and political analysts rarely give it the attention it deserves. It does not appear at all, for example, among the scores of speeches quoted in Frederick J Ryan Jr.’s Ronald Reagan: The Wisdom and Humor of the Great Communicator (1995) or in Lou Cannon’s biography, President Reagan: The Role of a Lifetime (1991). What President Reagan said that day highlighted several aspects of his statesmanship and beliefs, and rarely has the work put into any speech – initially by the talented Peggy Noonan and her team, but primarily and ultimately of course by Reagan himself – garnered so much return so quickly. It achieved the three things necessary for an oration of that kind: sharply defining the candidate from his opponent, explaining concisely what the candidate was promising to do in the next administration, and energizing the audience both in the hall and at home to fight the election with all their conviction. When re-reading the speech today, secure in the knowledge that Reagan won that landslide election victory seventy-five days after it was delivered, it is hard to conceive the sense of expectation and excitement in the audience.
