No entanto, enquanto o poeta francês

James Joyce Estate finally gives Kate Bush Permission to use Molly Bloom soliloquy Kluwer Copyright Blog April 18, 2011 Guido Westkamp (Centre for Commercial Law Studies at Queen Mary, University of London) Please refer to this post as:Guido Westkamp, ‘James Joyce Estate finally gives Kate Bush Permission to use Molly Bloom soliloquy’, Kluwer Copyright Blog, April 18 2011, http://copyrightblog.kluweriplaw.com/2011/04/18/james-joyce-estate-finally-gives-kate-bush-permission-to-us e-molly-bloom-soliloquy/ By Luke McDongagh, PhD Candidate, QMIPRI The Irish Times has recently reported that the Joyce estate has, after many years of refusal, finally granted the English singer Kate Bush permission to use the famous Molly Bloom soliloquy from James Joyce’s seminal novel Ulysses as the lyrical basis for a song. The soliloquy, spoken at the end of the novel by Molly Bloom, the wife of the main character Leopold Bloom, is famous for including one of the longest sentences in the English literature (over 4000 words). Kate Bush was refused permission to use the extract in the original version of her album The Sensual World in 1989. The decision is notable due to the previous unwillingness of the Joyce estate to allow such adaptations of Joycean text. for instance, in 2006, a Stanford Professor, Carol Schloss, was forced to sue the Joyce estate in order to use parts of Joyce’s writings in an academic biography of Joyce’s daughter Lucia. The case was eventually settled with the Joyce estate agreeing to pay Schloss’ costs. It is notable that James Joyce, who died in 1941, used many “appropriations” in the creation of Ulysses; in fact the entire plot of the novel is based on Homer’s Odyssey.

Signed: Name of student: Student number: Severens 2 Abstract Kate Bush remains one of the most successful and original British female music artists and is often perceived as a female pioneer. This thesis analyses a selection of her earlier work in order to establish how she represents issues of gender and sexuality in her lyrics and performances. Her work is evaluated through the lens of two feminist theories: écriture feminine and gender performativity. Écriture féminine is employed to determine how Bush writes and reclaims female sexuality, while gender performativity subsequently shows how she transcends her position as a woman by taking on and representing characters of the opposite gender. This thesis argues that Bush constructs narratives in her lyrics to represent experiences which transcend the boundaries of binary gender and challenge social sexual norms. She first became famous when she was 19, when she topped the British pop charts with her debut single “Wuthering Heights” in 1978. Since then she has released many songs and albums and became a famous and influential individual in the music industry. One of Bush’s trademarks is that she writes songs that allow her to put herself into fictional situations and, in a way, become someone else and tell stories from this perspective (Reynolds, and Press 282, 292). Some of these storytelling-songs have been inspired by existing stories or literature.

  • 50 Words for Snow by Kate Bush
50 Words For Snow by Kate Bush 50 Words For Snow , by Kate Bush by Denis Joe November 2011 I love this time of year: the run-up to Christmas. Whilst some moan about lack of tradition and meaning, and whinge about the ‘consumer’ orgy, I am never less than amazed at the crowds in city centres who put themselves through so much in order to show their family and friends just how much they care. That is something to celebrate. It is a time when people show themselves as caring and unselfish individuals. What I hate about this time of year is the omnipresence of the Christmas pop song, as if the music industry feels that it needs to force people to be happy. The exception is Fairy Tale of New York, a song consistently voted the best Christmas song of all time; it has everything a great Christmas song should have: pathos and sentimentality. The only Christmas album that I have ever heard that I really like is Home for Christmas by the Swedish mezzo-soprano, Anne Sofie von Otter released over a decade ago, and that is partly because I don’t understand the Swedish language. So I was a bit wary of Kate Bush’s new album, (the first album of new work in five years). 1 / 4 50 Words For Snow by Kate Bush It may seem rather strange to younger people today, but Kate Bush was a phenomena. Arriving on the pop scene as the cadaver of punk rock was having the last piece of meat ripped from it by the likes of Malcolm McLaren and as boys and girls in London were prettying themselves up preparing for the most vacuous youth movement ever: the New Romantics, Kate Bush was not just a beautiful looking woman, she was also bringing a unique sound to the pop music world.
