The Temptation of Jesus
Luke 4:1-13
Characters: Narrator, Jesus, Satan
Narrator: After Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River, he was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he went out into the desert and fasted and prayed for forty days. On the last day of his fasting, Satan came to him to tempt him.
Satan: If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become a loaf of bread.
Jesus: It is written: Man does not live on bread alone.
Narrator: Frustrated that his first temptation failed, Satan took Jesus up to the highest hilltop.
Satan: I will give you all of this authority and splendor, for these kingdoms have been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. All I ask is that you bow down and worship me.
Jesus: It is written: Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.
Narrator: Satan was frustrated by his second failed attempt. He took Jesus up to the roof of the temple, and tried to tempt him once more.
Satan: If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here. For it is written: He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
Jesus: It is also written: Do not put the Lord your God to the test.
Narrator: Satan left Jesus, upset that he failed at tempting him. He left him until a more opportune time.
