Narrator: After Jesus was baptized by the Baptist in the River, he was filled with the , and he went out into the desert and fasted and prayed for forty days. On the last day of his , Satan came to him to tempt him.

Satan: If you are the Son of , tell this stone to become a loaf of bread.

Jesus: It is written: Man does not live on bread alone.

Narrator: Frustrated that his first temptation failed, Satan took Jesus up to the highest hilltop.

Satan: I will give you all of this authority and splendor, for these kingdoms have been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. All I ask is that you bow down and worship me.

Jesus: It is written: Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.

Narrator: Satan was frustrated by his second failed attempt. He took Jesus up to the roof of the temple, and tried to tempt him once more.

Satan: If you are the , throw yourself down from here. For it is written: He will command his concerning you to guard you carefully; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

Jesus: It is also written: Do not put the Lord your God to the test.

Narrator: Satan left Jesus, upset that he failed at tempting him. He left him until a more opportune time.
