  • Robotic Pets in the Lives of Preschool Children
Robotic pets in the lives of preschool children Peter H. Kahn, Jr., Batya Friedman, Deanne R. Pérez-Granados and Nathan G. Freier University of Washington / Stanford University / University of Washington This study examined preschool children’s reasoning about and behavioral interactions with one of the most advanced robotic pets currently on the retail market, Sony’s robotic dog AIBO. Eighty children, equally divided between two age groups, 34–50 months and 58–74 months, participated in individual sessions with two artifacts: AIBO and a stuffed dog. Evaluation and justification results showed similarities in children’s reasoning across artifacts. In contrast, children engaged more often in apprehensive behavior and attempts at reciprocity with AIBO, and more often mistreated the stuffed dog and endowed it with animation. Discussion focuses on how robotic pets, as representative of an emerging technological genre, may be (a) blurring foundational ontological categories, and (b) impacting children’s social and moral development. Keywords: AIBO, children, human–computer interaction, human–robot interaction, moral development, social development, Value Sensitive Design Animals have long been an important part of children’s lives, offering comfort and companionship, and promoting the development of moral reciprocity and responsibility (Beck & Katcher, 1996; Kahn, 1999; Melson, 2001). Yet in recent years there has been a movement to create robotic pets that mimic aspects of their biological counterparts. In turn, researchers have begun to ask important questions. Can robotic pets, compared to biological pets, provide children with similar developmental outcomes (Druin & Hendler, 2000; Pérez-Granados, 2002; Turkle, 2000)? How do children conceive of this genre of robots? It is a genre that some researchers have begun to refer to as “social robots” (Bartneck & Forlizzi, 2004; Breazeal, 2003): robots that, to varying degrees, have some constellation of being personified, embodied, adaptive, and autonomous; and Interaction Studies 7:3 (2006), 405–436.

Melson Purdue University Peter H. Kahn, Jr. University of Washington Alan Beck Purdue University Batya Friedman University of Washington Robotic “pets” are being marketed as social companions and are used in the emerging field of robot-assisted activities, including robot-assisted therapy (RAA). However, the limits to and potential of robotic analogues of living animals as social and therapeutic partners remain unclear. Do children and adults view robotic pets as “animal-like,” “machine-like,” or some combination of both? How do social behaviors differ toward a robotic versus living dog? To address these issues, we synthesized data from three studies of the robotic dog AIBO: (1) a content analysis of 6,438 Internet postings by 182 adult AIBO owners; (2) observations ∗ Correspondence concerning this article should be addressed to Gail F. • War Room Wins Box Office
War Room Wins Box Office Over the Labor Day weekend (Sept. 4-7), the faith-based family drama War Room exceeded expectations by earning $12.6 million from 1,526 locations and taking the top spot of box office sales. It also opened as the #1 faith-based movie of 2015 and the highest in the genre since Heaven Is for Real (in April 2014). War Room is the fifth film from Alex and Stephen Kendrick (Courageous, Fireproof, Facing the Giants, Flywheel), and has enjoyed media coverage from outlets such as Associated Press, Washington Post, Entertainment Weekly, Forbes, USA Today, Entertainment Tonight, CBS, FOX News, and others. Actor/writer/director Alex Kendrick and his brother, producer/co-writer Stephen Kendrick, did exactly what one would expect devout Christians to do when it came to their latest film: they prayed for it to succeed. “We didn’t wake up one day wanting to make a movie about a 75-year-old woman’s prayer closet,” Stephen explains. “We asked God to order our steps, and the ideas came. As filmmakers, we’re laying tracks before a moving train.” “People have plans for everything in life: careers, finances, health. Sony PlayStation collaborates with MUBI to enhance film viewing on PS3 Submitted by: pr-sending-enterprises Tuesday, 8 June 2010 Sony Computer Entertainment Europe [SCEE] has announced a partnership with online film cinematheque MUBI, to bring to PlayStation®3 (PS3™) a new service that will introduce PS3 owners to a world of independent, international and classic cinema. Later this year, PS3 users will have access to a treasure trove of celluloid curated by experts - so that even non-experts can enjoy what might otherwise take a lifetime to discover. MUBI will offer more than 300 films at launch from directors from Audiard to Zeferelli; and they're all going to be available to stream directly to users' PS3s. PS3 users will need to download the free MUBI application from PlayStation Store. They can then open it up and start watching. Users can find festival gems, classics, famous independent releases and art-house flicks, or discover the work of world-famous directors like the Coen Brothers and Tarantino alongside Latin American directors and restored shorts from international archives. Furthermore, users can share their recommendations and ideas with friends in the PlayStation MUBI community. Joining SCEE President Andrew House in Cannes at the unveiling of the service, MUBI founder Efe Çakarel said: "MUBI is the fastest growing online destination for lovers of independent, foreign and classic film. And discovery for PS3 users couldn’t be more fun - from finding out about the films behind the latest buzz at Cannes, to taking the film recommendation of MUBI members like Martin Scorsese." Andrew House added: "PlayStation is about great entertainment, from PS3 games (http://uk.playstation.com/ps3/games/) to content, delivered straight to the living room or enjoyed on the go.
