SOVIET LAW REFORM-DATELINE MOSCOW 1957 HAROLD J. BERMANt DURING a month's stay in Moscow in August-September 1955, I learned that a larger-scale movement for law reform was underway in the Soviet Union, a movement whose dimensions could not easily be grasped by reading Soviet legal literature and the Soviet press.1 A second trip to Moscow in May 1957 yielded additional information from leading Soviet jurists-justice officials, law pro- fessors, judges-who are themselves actively participating in drafting new legis- lation and new codes.2 That one must go to Moscow to learn of salient developments in Soviet law is testimony to what is today the most shocking feature of the Soviet legal system: the existence of secret laws. On the other hand, that one can go to Moscow and be told about the contents of secret laws and the unpublicized implications of published laws testifies to a certain relaxation of the secrecy. Slowly but significantly, the importance of publicizing legislation and judicial decisions is being recognized. 3 The existence of even a limited secrecy, however, together with other re- strictions upon free discussion imposed by the Communist system, particularly the rule that once a "Party line" is adopted it is not to be publicly criticized, raises doubts as to the value of statements made by Soviet jurists. Are they worth repeating? No simple answer can be offered. Some statements are, I believe, of great value and well worth repeating; others are not. Up to this day, soccer continues to captivate billions of sports enthu- siasts all over the globe. Football has achieved great recognition, and it is now considered the most popular sport in the world. Nowadays it is appropriate and entirely justified to talk about the emergence of the foot- ball industry. Basically, modern soccer can be viewed as an international business, since global player trans- fers are made on a regular basis and international professional tournaments are organized. Moreover, soccer leagues may be now rightfully classified as separate commercialized industries. Certain football tournaments perform much better than their competitors in a business sense. In this work, the Russian Premier League in particular is discussed. The aim of the study is to investigate the historic and current issues of Russian soccer, the reasons for their emergence, and the present state. Furthermore, the commercial prospects and possibilities for local football’s business development are inspected. Potential solu- tions to the outlined problems are demonstrated as well. -

However few of theses elements made gymnastics history. As such we wonder by whom, when or where these various elements are performed. The purpose of this study was to collate data elements on the Horizontal Bar (HB) in men’s artistic gymnastics and to suggest new elements in the future. The method of study was undertaken by bibliographic analysis. This article refers mainly to journals that were published by the Japan Gymnastic Association, and a list that was made regarding the occurrence of new elements on HB in Men’s artistic gymnastics. From the analysis, the author gatherd data regarding various elememts that were performed. For example, Swing forward and vault backward straddle to hang (Tkatchev) was performed by Tkatchev A. in the 1979 World cup. A Tkatchev stretch was performed by Liukin V. and Nishikawa D. in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. In conclusion, developments of HB elements are greatly influenced by the improvement of apparatus, rules of the era. Kicking Through the Wall: Football, Division, and Entanglement in Postwar Berlin By Emmanuel Hogg, BA (Hons), MA A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Carleton University Ottawa, ON © 2016, Emmanuel Hogg Abstract Seldom is the German capital referred to as a “Fußballstadt” (“football-city”). When Berlin and football are mentioned together, themes of corruption, hooliganism, the Stasi, and scandal dominate. And yet, Berlin holds a rich footballing history that dates back to the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and has long played an important role in the lives of Berliners as spaces for sociability. In the postwar period, two divergent states emerged, each with their own competing structures of football. Whereas in the Federal Republic football remained an autonomous but not apolitical space, it was explicitly politicized in East Germany. As an important form of “soft power” during the Cold War, the people’s game reveals the extent to which the Iron Curtain was much more porous and elastic than the imagery of the Berlin Wall suggests. Rather than view football as “war without the fighting”, a microcosm that interprets the German and Cold War past as simplistic, reductive, and dichotomous, this dissertation analyzes the sport’s inherent dynamism that presented Berliners on both sides of the Wall with unique spaces for social interaction. Although both German states tried to use the sport to assert their own interests, this dissertation argues that football simultaneously provided fans with a relatively free space authorities could not effectively control, opening the opportunity for German- German interactions. -
