  • HOSSEIN ALIZADEH PEJMAN HADADI PRESS KIT About Monad
The Art of Improvisation in Persian Classical Music Live in Concert HOSSEIN ALIZADEH PEJMAN HADADI PRESS KIT About Monad MONAD brings the collaborative affiliation of two exceptional contemporary masters of Per- sian classical music – the legendary tar and setar composer and performer Hossein Alizadeh, together with the world-renowned percussionist of tombak and daf, Pejman Hadadi. Both are highly adept in the radif repertoire - the collection of ancient Iranian melodic phrases preser- ved through many generations of oral tradition. Combined with their respective sensibilities from Western and other world music traditions, they produce a uniquely contemporary appro- ach to their traditional arrangements. Their deep and personal relationship of many years further augments the intimate and synchronous dialogue between the two and their instru- ments. Audience members, whether experienced or novice in the art of traditional Iranian music, are invited to surrender to the full experience of MONAD and its 'haal' - a term central to the art of improvisation in Persian music, which refers to being present to…fully immersed in…or even getting totally lost in the heart of the feeling and spirit of the performers. Being witness to the impressive quality of these highly accomplished masters leads those present on a mys- tical journey through some of the most distinguished artistry in the world. 2 3 4 Hossein Alizadeh 5 Hossein Alizadeh Hossein Alizadeh is one of Iran‘s leading classical composers and musicians and is considered one of the most important figures in contemporary Persian music today. The 2006 Grammy Nominee is oftentimes referred to as the Ravi Shankar of Iran.

Event Archives August 2016 - July 2017 Carolina Center for the Study of the Middle East and Muslim Civilizations Events at Duke, Events at UNC, Events in the Triangle August 10, 2016 Perceptions, Realities and the Changing Dynamics of Pakistan Relations: A Lecture by Dr. Saeed Shafqat Time: 3:00pm – 4:35pm Location: FedEx Global Education Center UNC-Chapel Hill Categories: Lecture Description: U.S.- Pakistan relations are a painfully enduring relationship. Over the decades, these nations have witnessed high and low points several times yet endured and not broken. The ‘terms of endearment’ have undergone changes during each decade. For example, former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton described US-Pakistan relations as ‘transactional’ and not based on mutual trust. Some scholars have declared Pakistan an ‘unworthy ally.’ Others have announced the ‘end of illusions’, yet others claim that India-Pakistan has been ‘de- hyphenated’ in the U.S. South Asia strategy and yet India-Pakistan relations remain a major concern for the U.S. Why? To borrow a Chinese expression, this is the ‘New Normal’ in U.S.- Pakistan relations. Focusing on three dimensions–geo-strategic interests, the global war on terrorism and a changing regional environment–policy makers in the two countries are constantly trying to re- position and adapt on issues of mutual concern. These sensibilities are manifested through the ongoing Strategic Dialogue between the two countries, despite hiccups. Interpreting patterns of ‘high’ and ‘low’ points, Dr. Saeed Shafqat will identify the changing contours and future direction of U.S.-Pakistan relations. Sponsors: This event is sponsored by Wake Forest University, North Carolina Central University and the Carolina Asia Center.

Sorou-e Gol (Poem: Feridoun Moshiri) All songs composed by Hossein Alizadeh Persian Classical Music From high mountain ranges to vast desert plains and fertile coastal areas, Iran is a land of contrasts. Iranians often explain the profound spirituality of their music and poetry as a response to this landscape as well as to the country’s turbulent history. Rooted in a rich and ancient heritage, this is a music of contemplation and meditation which is linked through the poetry to Sufism, the mystical branch of Islam whose members seek spiritual union with God. The aesthetic beauty of this refined and intensely personal music lies in the intricate nuances of the freely flowing solo melody lines, which are often compared with the elaborate designs found on Persian carpets and miniature paintings.
