Pathology of Imprisonment PHILIP G. ZIMBARDO Philip Zimbardo and his colleagues were interested in studying the effects of imprisonment on human behavior—in particular, the psychological impact of imprisonment. They opened a mock prison and peopled it with carefully screened college students who were “mature, emotionally stable, normal, intelligent,” and “from middle-class homes throughout the United States and Canada.” Then they observed what happened. The results of the experiment proved so shocking that the researchers aborted it after just six days. In this essay, Zimbardo reports on these results. He then comments on why prisons breed pathological behavior and what we might do to prevent what happened during the experiment. was recently released from solitary confinement after being held therein Ifor 37 months [months!]. A silent system was imposed upon me and to even whisper to the man in the next cell resulted in being beaten by guards, sprayed with chemical mace, blackjacked, stomped and thrown into a strip- cell naked to sleep on a concrete floor without bedding, covering, wash basin or even a toilet. The floor served as toilet and bed, and even there the silent system was enforced. To let a moan escape your lips because of the pain and discomfort . resulted in another beating. I spent not days, but months there during my 37 months in solitary. I have filed every writ possible against the administrative acts of brutality. The state courts have all denied the petitions. Because of my refusal to let the things die down and forget all that happened during my 37 months in solitary . -

August 12, 2013 President Barack Obama The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20500 Dear Mr. President: We are health care professionals, members of human rights organizations, and others deeply concerned about the delays in closing the Guantánamo Bay detention camp and the appalling treatment of the detainees on hunger strike. The hunger strike has now passed its sixth month and up to 106 detainees have joined, with as many as 46 of them subjected to force-feeding. The President of the American Medical Association (AMA) has written to Defense Secretary Hagel that force-feeding mentally competent adults is a violation of medical ethics. The American Nursing Association (ANA) position statement, consistent with the Code of Ethics for Nurses, asserts that “acceptance or refusal of food and fluids, whether delivered by normal or artificial means must be respected.” The Guantánamo Command maintains that force-feeding the prisoners is necessary to save lives and that the procedures conform to acceptable practice. We strongly disagree. There is alarming evidence in news reports and in the new Guantánamo Standard Operating Procedures: Medical Management of Detainees on Hunger Strike (SOP) that the Guantánamo method is exceptionally brutal. When a detainee resists, he is forcefully extracted from his cell by several soldiers and strapped into a 6-point restraint chair. A mask is placed over his mouth to keep him from biting or spitting at medical personnel. He may stay strapped down for two hours while personnel make sure he does not vomit the liquid feeding. Men weakened by significant weight loss are particularly at risk for serious injury during this regimen. -

Chapter 1: Prescientific Psychology
Prescientific Psychology 1 Start with these facts. Psychology is the most popular elective in American high schools today. Furthermore, psychology is one of the two or three most popular undergraduate majors in North American colleges. People cannot seem to get enough of psychol- ogy; it is everywhere today. It is the substance of movies, novels, computer games, social media, magazines, television shows, tabloid newspapers, radio talk shows, and music lyrics. Clearly, there is no shortage of public interest in psychology. People are interested in behavior—their own, their relatives, their neighbors, their cowork- ers, and even strangers who they know only through the media of books, magazines, or television shows such as soap operas, courtroom programs, game shows, situation comedies, dramas, and the so-called “reality” shows. There seems to be a never-ending fascination with human behavior that is perhaps inherent in human nature. It is likely that such an interest has afforded evolutionary advantages. An individual ’ s ability to understand and, better still, anticipate the behavior of others has survival value. Psy- chologists refer to this public interest in psychology as popular psychology. It isn ’ t psychology of the form that would be recognized by most psychologists as scientific psychology. Indeed, many psychologists would be embarrassed by any association with it. However, the public loves it, and it is their psychology. Psychology has existed, no doubt, from the very beginnings of human history. When hominids first walked erect on the earth, facing a life expectancy of perhaps 30 years, a life beset with hardships and dangers that could hardly be imagined today, these early individuals were in need of human comfort, of reassurance, of empa- thy, and of guidance. -

Each of these candidates was invited to submit a 500 word statement of how s/he felt about the integration of psychology and the importance of unity within psychology. The candidates were asked how they would encourage unity as president of APA. This statement could include comments on the importance of a general psychology, if desired. Division One does not support any one candidate for APA President, but the Executive Committee is inter- ested in who is running and in how they feel about the unity of psychology. Our division leadership feels that it is very important for the division members to vote in this election and that each member consider the goals of the division in casting his or her vote. -

The Score Newsletter of APA Division 5: Quantitative and Qualitative Methods October 2015 Report of the August Meeting of APA Council by Susana Urbina and William Revelle Division 5 Representatives to COR Issues Related to the Report to the Special Committee of the Board of Directors of the American Psychological Association: Independent Review Relating to APA Ethics Guidelines, Susana Urbina National Security Interrogations, and Torture HE PRIMARY ITEM of business for the COR was to discuss and deal with the T542-page report by David Hoffman and his colleagues at the Chicago law firm Sidley Austin LLP. The entire report and supplementary material is available at http://www. apa.org/independent-review/, as is a revised version and errata sheet submitted by Mr. Hoffman on September 4, 2015. The first 72 pages of the document contain the executive summary of the report. As most members of Division 5 know by now, the IR reviewed actions taken by the senior staff and leadership of APA, in collusion with members of the Department of De- fense (DOD), during the first half of 2005. These actions resulted in the issuance of loose, high-level ethical guidelines that: 1. Permitted military psychologists to participate in detainee interrogations, and 2. Did not constrain the application of existing DOD guidelines which allowed the William Revelle use of techniques that would be construed as torture under the UN Convention Against Torture. History of Psychology
The Psych 101 Series James C. Kaufman, PhD, Series Editor Department of Educational Psychology University of Connecticut David C. Devonis, PhD, received his doctorate in the history of psychology from the University of New Hampshire’s erstwhile pro- gram in that subject in 1989 with a thesis on the history of conscious pleasure in modern American psychology. Since then he has taught vir- tually every course in the psychology curriculum in his academic odys- sey from the University of Redlands in Redlands, California, and the now-closed Teikyo Marycrest University (formerly Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa) to—for the past 17 years—Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa, alma mater of Bruce Jenner and, more famously for the history of psychology, of Noble H. Kelly (1901–1997), eminent con- tributor to psychology’s infrastructure through his many years of ser- vice to the American Board of Examiners in Professional Psychology. Dr. Devonis has been a member of Cheiron: The International Society for the History of Behavioral and Social Sciences since 1990, a con- tributor to many of its activities, and its treasurer for the past 10 years. Currently he is on the editorial board of the American Psychological Association journal History of Psychology and is, with Wade Pickren, coeditor and compiler of the online bibliography History of Psychology in the Oxford Bibliographies Online series. Class participation Come to class prepared to discuss/comment on the readings from Benjamin and ARES. Attendance is expected, with no more than one excused absence. 2. Class presentations The objective is to develop and make a formal presentation that teaches the class the essentials of one of the following history topics: women in psychology history of clinical psychology race and psychology counseling psychology psychometrics, especially psychological tests psychiatry/psychoanalysis applied psychology incl. forensic developmental psychology The due date for each topic is on the course schedule. Create and distribute a handout to the class and instructor.
