Countries are experiencing large-scale degradation of its air and water quality and generating massive amounts of waste, while becoming vulnerable to climate change impacts. While governments are responding in various ways, traditional regulations, such as standards, bans, and penalties, are limited in their ability to stimulate actions that effectively address the region’s urgent environmental problems. Alternative policy and economic approaches may be one solution to curb business-as-usual activities and impacts on the environment. There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that market-based approaches for environmental management can induce businesses, households, and individuals to reduce pollution and use resources efficiently through incentives, behavior changes, innovation, and raised public awareness of corporate environmental performance. In the wake of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, we will need smart and sustainable strategies to drive action that will address the current crisis and build resilience to future shocks. While public funding and development assistance are prioritized for health care and social protection in the immediate term, the use of market-based mechanisms can generate domestic revenues and mobilize private sector investment toward a green and resilient recovery in the long term. We have an opportunity to build back better and invest in nature, not only to manage the causes of diseases like COVID-19, but also in our planet’s health and wealth. This report, Greening Markets: Market-Based Approaches for Environmental Management in Asia, looks at global and regional trends in air quality, water, and waste management and identifies opportunities where introducing and scaling up market-based policy instruments may help achieve environmental goals. The report recommends governments to work closely with the private sector and civil society and take on a long-term, well-coordinated, flexible, and iterative approach to planning, designing, and adapting market-based policy reforms. As there is no one-size-fits-all instrument or policy mix that will apply across the region, governments will need to account for their specific environmental, social, and regulatory contexts, as well as design and implement effective economic instruments that are tailored to local needs.

Overview of the Pearl River and of Its Source The Pearl River is one of the three inland rivers of China. By streamflow, the Pearl River is the second largest inland river in China, second only to the Yangtze River; by length, the Pearl River is the third largest inland river in China, following the Yangtze River and the Yellow River. The main stream of the Pearl River is 2320km long in total, the basin area is 446,768km2 [1], its river basin stretches over Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Hunan, Jiangxi, Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, and it flows into the South China Sea from the 8th estuary in the Pearl River Delta.

The chemical and isotopic analysis results, particularly of strontium, for water samples collected from eleven stations along the Pearl River, four times over the course of one year, showed that due to weathering by - 2+ 2+ carbonate or silicate rocks, HCO3 , Ca , and Mg have become the main ions in the river water. Through river ion stoichiometric and flux calculations, the carbonate rock weathering rate and atmospheric CO2 consumption were found to be 27.6 mm/ka and 540 x 103 mol/km2.a, which are 10.8 and 6.7 times the corresponding values for silicate rock. With the beneficial climatic conditions for rock erosion and large areas of carbonate rock in the Pearl River Basin, the atmospheric CO2 consumption value is about 2.6 times the average value for the 60 major rivers in the world. 1 Introduction Rock weathering is a universal, and one of the most influential, geological processes that occurs on the earth’s surface. Atmospheric CO2 is an important driving force for the karst geological processes [1]. Atmospheric CO2 can be removed by chemical weathering of rocks and produce huge carbon sinks, thereby reducing atmospheric CO2.

The more efficient and reliable the transportation system is, the more traumatic a deficiency will be for commuters. 5. The global climate will be better-off without UN climate change conferences. 6. Cooking is like a Chemistry experiment, quantity of each ingredient has a major influence on the end result. 7. Social media is a catalyst for exhibitionism, narcissism and depressions. 8. Assumptions are the most effective tool for a successful research. 9. The greatest hurdle to finish a thesis on time is procrastination. 10. Other than the traditional news media, daily commuting is the best way to be aware of local events.
