His family consisted of his father, Albert David Wheatley, his mother, Florence 'Dolly' Newton, himself and a sister, Muriel. Both his father and grandfather were wine merchants in Mayfair. In 1911, when only 14 years old, he wrote his first short story – THE SNAKE WITH THE GOLDEN EYES – which was not published until the 1st of October 1942 in the short story collection MEDITERRANEAN NIGHTS. The fact that this story could be published he could thank his Aunt Nell for. She had kept the manuscript, as she knew that he one day would be a famous author. As a cadet he was educated on HMS WORCESTER in Germany 1908-1912. After that he studied/learned how to make wine in Germany for one year. In September 1914, at the age of 17, he got his first appointment at the newly founded SECOND-LINE BRIGADE of the FIRST CITY of LONDON ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY (R.F.A. – T.) as second Lieutenant. This was signed by H. M. The King. In 1916, when his brigade was moved to France, Dennis Wheatley was in hospital for about 8 months. He had pneumonia and couldn't follow his brigade. Just before the brigade moved he had been promoted to test a new weapon at his division – the first trenchgun – and at that same moment he should have been promoted to Captain – and that at the age of only 19. In 1917, the 8th of August, he was moved to France. That same year, the 11th of August, he was moved again. This time to the Divisional Column of the 36th Ulster Division (the finest fighting division in The British European Forces (B.E.F.) Already, before the end of his training, which started in the Autumn of 1916 on Salisbury Plain, the following had happened: 1915 the Airforce in England were looking for volunteers to the Royal Fighting Corps (R.F.C.) and Wheatley, who wanted to go to the front and was tired of waiting, volunteered. Unfortunately at the medical test it showed him as slightly colour blind. He was not accepted. That hit him so hard that he was close to suicide. Wheatley was then fighting at Passchendale, Cambrai and St. Quentin in the 1st World War. In May 1918 he was gassed and had to spend a long time in hospital. Because of that gassing he was removed from military duty and it would take many years before he was back in active duty. 1914-1919 he was an artillery officer. After his recovery and a civilian again he started to work in his father's wine business (1919). During that time he wrote some short stories, which were published much later. For example: BORROWED MONEY (1919), THE NOTORIOUS MADAME RIBERAU (1920), THE SECRET SIGN (1923) (the draft which later on would be THE GOLDEN SPANIARD (1929)), and THE SIDEBOARD. In 1923 he married Nancy Madelaine Robinson and they had a son named Anthony. 1926 was to be a very important year for Dennis Wheatley. He took over his father's wine business and started at once to expand it. Later on it absorbed many famous wine cellars and among his many customers were three Kings, 21 Princes (among them The Duke of York later H.M. King George of England) plus many, many other famous people. During that time he was also a Guild-Brother in VINTNERS & DISTILLERS COMPANY. In 1931 he married for the second time. This time with Joan Gwendoline, youngest daughter to Hon. Louis Johnstone. Joan already had 4 children: Diana, Bill, Jack and Colin. The bad years 1929-31 meant a big crisis for Wheatley's business and he made rather great losses economically. That also meant he had more time left for writing and for collecting books. But he didn't only collect books, he wanted to write one of his own. He wanted to do 17 it not only for his own amusement but also in the hope to make some money. Of course he hadn't got the ambition to reach up to such a level as his favourites Huxley, Sinclair, Lewis and Montague.

  • The Tarzan Series of Edgar Rice Burroughs
I The Tarzan Series of Edgar Rice Burroughs: Lost Races and Racism in American Popular Culture James R. Nesteby Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree in Doctor of Philosophy August 1978 Approved: © 1978 JAMES RONALD NESTEBY ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ¡ ¡ in Abstract The Tarzan series of Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950), beginning with the All-Story serialization in 1912 of Tarzan of the Apes (1914 book), reveals deepseated racism in the popular imagination of early twentieth-century American culture. The fictional fantasies of lost races like that ruled by La of Opar (or Atlantis) are interwoven with the realities of racism, particularly toward Afro-Americans and black Africans. In analyzing popular culture, Stith Thompson's Motif-Index of Folk-Literature (1932) and John G. Cawelti's Adventure, Mystery, and Romance (1976) are utilized for their indexing and formula concepts. The groundwork for examining explanations of American culture which occur in Burroughs' science fantasies about Tarzan is provided by Ray R. Browne, publisher of The Journal of Popular Culture and The Journal of American Culture, and by Gene Wise, author of American Historical Explanations (1973). The lost race tradition and its relationship to racism in American popular fiction is explored through the inner earth motif popularized by John Cleves Symmes' Symzonla: A Voyage of Discovery (1820) and Edgar Allan Poe's The narrative of A. Gordon Pym (1838); Burroughs frequently uses the motif in his perennially popular romances of adventure which have made Tarzan of the Apes (Lord Greystoke) an ubiquitous feature of American culture.

Actually, she is not possessed by the Devil, as the quotation at the beginning of this review suggested, but her father became a Satanist and has signed away his soul and involved her in the initial rites, so that she is influenced by them. Widmark v Lee is a close one which I'm there for and it's a well paced, musically eerie, and bloody horror film. On the wish list. Enlarge cover. Add the first question. Wicking called the film "an awful mess. In the hours of darkness she becomes a Bad Girl, giving herself up to all kinds of naughtiness. Mar 11, Adele Geraghty rated it liked it. Black Magic 1 - 10 of 12 books. Details if other :. I DID enjoy Molly, but she ended up "disappearing" from the novel for a rather extended period of time, only to come back again at the end. Off it's head, completely mad and authored by someone with dodgy Right wing autocratic and aristocratic sympathies. About Dennis Wheatley. An amazing cast and some great atmosphere but just lacks something. Admittedly Molly takes part in the final assault on the enemy, though being a woman she of course slows them down.

  • From Decadent Diabolist to Roman Catholic Demonologist: Some Biographical Curiosities from Montague Summers’ Black Folio
From Decadent Diabolist to Roman Catholic Demonologist: Some Biographical Curiosities from Montague Summers’ Black Folio Bernard Doherty Introduction The history and practice of black magic, witchcraft, and Satanism have long held a deep fascination in British—and indeed international—popular culture. Beginning with the gothic literature of the eighteenth century, through to the nineteenth century occult revival and Victorian “penny dreadful,” and then into twentieth century pulp fiction, tales of the supernatural involving maleficent magic have been authored some of Britain’s most popular—if not always critically acclaimed—writers including, among others M. R. James, Arthur Machen, William Somerset Maugham, Agatha Christie, Charles Williams, and Dennis Wheatley. These writers, as well as various other short story writers, novelists, and journalists, have all played an important role in shaping, recording, and reflecting popular beliefs about these topics. Indeed, not a few occult practitioners, most notably Aleister Crowley, Dion Fortune, Gerald Gardner, and Doreen Valiente, even turned their hands to writing popular occult fiction. Despite this, the frequent blurring of the often porous boundary between actual occult practices and groups, and the imagined worlds of the purveyors of popular and literary fiction, has been seldom explored outside of highly specialised academic literature dedicated to the history of gothic or weird fiction and the burgeoning study of what has come to be called Western Esotericism.1 Bernard Doherty is a lecturer in the School of Theology at Charles Sturt University. 1 See, for example, Nick Freeman, ‘The Black Magic Bogeyman 1908–1935’, in The Occult Imagination in Britain, 1875–1947, ed. Christine Ferguson and Andrew Radford, pp.

  • Unseen Horrors: the Unmade Films of Hammer
Unseen Horrors: The Unmade Films of Hammer Thesis submitted by Kieran Foster In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy De Montfort University, March 2019 Abstract This doctoral thesis is an industrial study of Hammer Film Productions, focusing specifically on the period of 1955-2000, and foregrounding the company’s unmade projects as primary case studies throughout. It represents a significant academic intervention by being the first sustained industry study to primarily utilise unmade projects. The study uses these projects to examine the evolving production strategies of Hammer throughout this period, and to demonstrate the methodological benefits of utilising unmade case studies in production histories. Chapter 1 introduces the study, and sets out the scope, context and structure of the work. Chapter 2 reviews the relevant literature, considering unmade films relation to studies in adaptation, screenwriting, directing and producing, as well as existing works on Hammer Films. Chapter 3 begins the chronological study of Hammer, with the company attempting to capitalise on recent successes in the mid-1950s with three ambitious projects that ultimately failed to make it into production – Milton Subotsky’s Frankenstein, the would-be television series Tales of Frankenstein and Richard Matheson’s The Night Creatures. Chapter 4 examines Hammer’s attempt to revitalise one of its most reliable franchises – Dracula, in response to declining American interest in the company. Notably, with a project entitled Kali Devil Bride of Dracula. Chapter 5 examines the unmade project Nessie, and how it demonstrates Hammer’s shift in production strategy in the late 1970s, as it moved away from a reliance on American finance and towards a more internationalised, piece-meal approach to funding.
