32 Academic Costume

The celebration of Commencement is surroundedby nch ffaditions. The established community oJ scholors the Faculty - convene to recognize fficially the newest group oJ proven scholars the- Graduates andwelcome theminfellowship. Graduates don the attire thatJor yearshas- symbolized- scholarly attainment.

Duing the Middle Ages those seehing an education traveled to European centers oJ learning. Centers of learning and universities were closely allied with the cleics of the time, and the scholars donned garb similar to that worn by the clerg. This evolved into th e ac ademic unif o rm, a lo ng bl ach gow n, ho o d, and c ap, which p r ov e d us eful f o r study ing in unheated and draJty buildings. Thehood ser"',ed simultaneously as ohead cownng, a repository Jor coins and alms and the t'orerunner of the modern day boohbag. The hood was adorned with the colors of the university and designated the young scholar\ school or university affilianon. By thar dtstinctive clothingthe studurts were set apart and disnnguished from the citizens of the town;hence the ongln of the phrase "town and gown." Amencan colleges and uniyersities odopted the weaing of the traditional apparel in Colonial times, and a common code for academic apparel was establishedin the mid- nineteenth century.

The hood is the most distinctfue Jeature of academic regalia. The inside of the hood islinedwith the fficial colors oJ the institution; today you seeWilhes grddudtes weanng hoods lined with the blue and gold colors of the Universig. The velvet tim around the outside of thehood designates the degree or field oJ study oJ the graduates. The velvet colors wornby today's graduates sWtfy the following: GoldenYellow Science 'V/hite - - Arts, Letters, Humanities Drab - Business Administration Pinh - Music Brown - Fine Arts Olive - Pharmacy The sgle of the gown distinguishes graduatesby the degree they have eorned. Those eorning the bachelor's degree wear d sirnple bloch gown with elongated pointed sleeves. Holders oJ the master\ degree wear gowns with alonger, closed, square cut sleeve. The doctoral gown is timmed with velvet stipes on the sleeves and panels of velvet on the front closure oJ the gown. Some Amencan uniyersities haye odopted doctoral gowns in their drstinctive colors. You will notice the slate oJ Columbia, the red of Cornell, the burgundy oJ the University of Pennsybania, thebnghtblue of the University of Michigan.

To haye earned the pnvilege oJ weanng academic costume regalia signifies not only the cornpletion of a program of studies, but entrance into the comradery of scholarship.
