ON THE ZOOLOQY OF FERNAXDO NOEONHA. 4'73 NOTESON THE ZOOLOGYOF FERNANDONORONHA. By H. N. RIDLBY,M.A., F.L.S. [Read 7th June, 1888.1 (PLATEXXX.) INTRODUCTION. ON July 9th; 188'7, the writer, with Mr. G. A. Ramege, of Edinburgh, started for Brazil to thoroughly explore the island of Fernando Noronha, lying in long. 32" 25' 30'' W.and lat. 3O 50' 10" S., at a distance of 194 miles N.E. from Cape San Roque, coast of Brazil. On arriving at Pernambuco we were joined by the Rev. T. S. Lea, who came as a volunteer at his own expense. The cost of the expedition was defrayed by the Boyal Society. After some delay at Pernambuco we embarked in the ' Nasmyth ' steamship, trading to Liverpool, which was permitted. to land us at the ialand, as the regular steamer trading between Pernambuco and Fernando Noronha was detained for a long time just as she was due to start. We arrived at our destination on August l4th, and remained the& till September 24th, when we returned by the little Brazilian steamer to the mainland. We occupied ourselves in exploring, and in collecting plants, animals, and rock-specimens in all parts of the main islands, and visited also most of the other islets which were accessible ; but owing to the absence of boats, which, on account of the convict-station, are not permitted on the island, we were unable to obtain much by dredging. The coral-reefs, however, at low tide afforded an abundant harvest of marine animals and plants. -

This latitudinal trend is markedly different from trends for terres- trial clades. The zonal variation in C/NC ratios within bins is largely due to differences in geographic ranges of the groups; for example, tropical carnivorous species range farther than non-carnivorous ones, thus overlapping them in more latitudinal bins. Differences in the distribution and diversity of carnivorous and non-carnivorous species may arise from a number of sources, including variability of primary production in the tropical eastern Pacific, patchiness of substrates to which non-carnivores are adapted, narrow dietary specializations of tropical carnivores, and higher provinciality found in extratropical regions. En esta revisión fue actualizada la sistemática y la clasificación de las especies de heterobranquios del registro fósil de Cuba, mediante la consulta de bibliografía especializada. La taxonomía fue verificada a todos los niveles y las especies registradas fueron organizadas evolutivamente de acuerdo a la sistemática actual. Esta actualización permitió obtener un conteo de 58 especies, agrupadas en 4 subgéneros, 31 géneros, 9 subfamilias, 20 familias, 17 superfamilias, 4 subórdenes y 3 órdenes; con 16 especies clasificadas cuya distribución se extiende desde el periodo Jurásico al Paleógeno y 30 distribuidas principalmente del Neógeno al Cuaternario. Aún sin identificar existe un grupo de fósiles de moluscos terrestres. Cuatro especies fueron ubicadas taxonómicamente como corresponde, pero no se encontraron referencias acerca de su nomenclatura. Este trabajo representa la introducción de los paleogasterópodos en la sistemática y la clasificación de los moluscos de Cuba en general. Peter Dance Occasionally, I try my very amateur hand at a painting in watercolours, selecting a subject not too demanding, not too large, not too intricate. In my more ambitious moments I choose to paint shells, not the easiest of subjects to portray accurately. Rashly, perhaps, I had promised to do a painting of an Alphabet Cone, Conus spurius, for my friend Harlan E. Wittkopf of Algona, Iowa. For Harlan no object is more desirable than the Alphabet Cone, so called because its markings often resemble letters of the alphabet. Mischievously, I decided to add some embellishments of my own to the natural pattern of the shell I had chosen as my subject. Eventually, the initials ‘H’, ‘E’, and ‘W’ featured in my hastily executed sketch of Harlan’s favourite shell. Tongue in cheek, I dashed it off to him. Harlan thanked me effusively, delighted that his favourite shell had been personalised. From then on he scrutinised closely the markings of each one he found. In truth, using a little imagination, it is not difficult to find letters on this cone shell, but it is a different matter when you are looking for specific combinations of letters. Harlan, it may be correct to assume, was looking for a specific Watercolour sketch of an imagined combination - and he found it! One evening, he phoned to say he Alphabet Cone (Conus spurius Gmelin) bearing the initials H, E and had picked up an Alphabet Cone W (and the name of the artist). -
