This latitudinal trend is markedly different from trends for terres- trial clades. The zonal variation in C/NC ratios within bins is largely due to differences in geographic ranges of the groups; for example, tropical carnivorous species range farther than non-carnivorous ones, thus overlapping them in more latitudinal bins. Differences in the distribution and diversity of carnivorous and non-carnivorous species may arise from a number of sources, including variability of primary production in the tropical eastern Pacific, patchiness of substrates to which non-carnivores are adapted, narrow dietary specializations of tropical carnivores, and higher provinciality found in extratropical regions. Peter Dance Occasionally, I try my very amateur hand at a painting in watercolours, selecting a subject not too demanding, not too large, not too intricate. In my more ambitious moments I choose to paint shells, not the easiest of subjects to portray accurately. Rashly, perhaps, I had promised to do a painting of an Alphabet Cone, Conus spurius, for my friend Harlan E. Wittkopf of Algona, Iowa. For Harlan no object is more desirable than the Alphabet Cone, so called because its markings often resemble letters of the alphabet. Mischievously, I decided to add some embellishments of my own to the natural pattern of the shell I had chosen as my subject. Eventually, the initials ‘H’, ‘E’, and ‘W’ featured in my hastily executed sketch of Harlan’s favourite shell. Tongue in cheek, I dashed it off to him. Harlan thanked me effusively, delighted that his favourite shell had been personalised. From then on he scrutinised closely the markings of each one he found. In truth, using a little imagination, it is not difficult to find letters on this cone shell, but it is a different matter when you are looking for specific combinations of letters. Harlan, it may be correct to assume, was looking for a specific Watercolour sketch of an imagined combination - and he found it! One evening, he phoned to say he Alphabet Cone (Conus spurius Gmelin) bearing the initials H, E and had picked up an Alphabet Cone W (and the name of the artist). -

Collin, Page 1 of 40 Abstract Caenogastropods, members of the largest clade of shelled snails including most familiar marine taxa, are abundant and diverse and yet surprisingly little is known about their reproduction. In many families, even the basic anatomy has been described for fewer than a handful of species. The literature implies that the general sexual anatomy and sexual behavior do not vary much within a family but for many families this hypothesis remains un-tested. Available data suggest that aphally, sexual dimorphism, maternal care, and different systems of sex determination have all evolved multiple times in parallel in caenogastropods. Most evolutionary transitions in these features have occurred in non-neogastropods (the taxa formerly included in the mesogastropoda). Multiple origins of these features provide the ideal system for comparative analyses of the required preconditions for and correlates of evolutionary transitions in sexual strategies. Detailed study of representatives from the numerous families for which scant information is available, and more completely resolved phylogenies are necessary to significantly improve our understanding of the evolution of sexual systems in the Caenogastropoda. In addition to basic data on sexual anatomy, behavioral observations are lacking for many groups. What data are available indicate that mate choice and sexual selection are complicated in gastropods and that the costs of reproduction may not be negligible. -

ENUMERAZIONE E SINODINA DELLE pel socio MARCHESE 1)1 MONTEROSATI) Era mio pensiero allorchè pubblicai nell’anno 1875 un semplice catalogo della fauna conchiolog-ica Mediterranea sotto il titolo di « Nuova Rivista », di far succedere a questo un esteso e ragionato lavoro, nel quale occupan- domi della descrizione delle nuove specie già sommariamente accennate in- tendevo sottoporre all’esame dei culteri della scienza il risultato di non po- chi ed indefessi studii su questo ramo importante della zoologia. Perö dopo la pubblicazione della mia «Nuova Rivista», uii numero considerevole di aggiunzioni sono state fatte alla nostra fauna conchiologica e non poche memorie su questo soggetto sono state pubblicate da varii autori e da me. Reputo quindi indispensable, a mio modo di vedere , prima di descrivere Io nuove specie e di discutere le specie litigiose, di coordinarle tutte nuo- vamente in questa prima parte e di offrire al mondo conchiologico un com plete catalogo delle ricchezze della fauna marina Mediterranea che potesse rispondere alle esigenze attuali della scienza. KENSLER Marine Science Laboratories, Menai Bridge, Anglesey, Great Britain INTRODUCTION For a number of years the Mediterranean coast, in the région of Banyuls-sur-Mer, has been a centre for marine ecological studies. General faunistic investigations hâve been undertaken by PRUVOT (1895, 1897) and DELAMARE DEBOUTTEVILLE (1954). Most ecological studies have been concerned with invertebrate groups, or with in- dividual species (TOPSENT, 1892; PRUVOT and RACOVITZA, 1895; HARANT, 1927; RABAUD, 1939; CHARNIAUX LEGRAND, 1951; PICARD, 1951; HARTMANN, 1953; BRÉMOND, 1958; MONNIOT, 1961; to name only a few). Recently several papers have appeared on the faunas of spe- cialised habitats, such as the mesopsammon (ANGELIER, 1950; DRAGESCO, 1953a, 1953&; DELAMARE DEBOUTTEVILLE, 1953), coralli- gènes (LAUBIER, 1958, 1959, 1961), « des herbiers de Posidonies » (KERNEÏS, 1960), and the trottoir (DELAMARE DEBOUTTEVILLE and BOUGIS, 1951; SCHUSTER, 1956, 1962). -

Box 37012, MRC 163, Washington, DC 20013-7012, USA bDepartment of Malacozoology, Museum of Natural History, Humboldt University, Invalidenstraße 43, 10115 Berlin, Germany Received 29 July 2005; accepted 1 February 2006 Abstract To better understand the diversification of the endemic thalassoid (i.e. marine-like) cerithioidean gastropods of Lake Tanganyika, as well as the origin and significance of brooding among lake species, we here redescribe the anatomy and ontogeny of the ovoviviparous Tiphobia horei from Lake Tanganyika and compare it to that of Lavigeria sp. A, representing another ovoviviparous lake clade that has acquired a uterine brood pouch independently. Within the phylogenetic framework provided by recent molecular analyses, the distant relation of these two taxa is corroborated by many external and internal anatomical differences. Comparison of the brood pouches demonstrates that they each bear unique features consistent with their independent modification for brooding. Despite representing functionally analogous structures, they also share several similarities in organization likely representing symplesiomorphies of the Lake Tanganyika species flock. The ontogeny is characterized by the presence of a velum and by delayed calcification producing a characteristically wrinkled embryonic cap. Comparison with other brooding cerithioideans reveals that T. horei and Lavigeria sp. A retain many more embryos than other freshwater cerithioideans of comparable size with a uterine brood pouch, possibly facilitated by the presence of longitudinal lamellae. -

IV, XLIII (2), 2019, pp. 239 -252 MIRKO WÖLFLING , B RITTA UHL , A RNOLD SCIBERRAS & A LAN DEIDUN MARINE SHELLED MOLLUSCS FROM TWO LOCATIONS IN THE MALTESE ISLANDS – A CHECKLIST SUMMARY Climate change and manifold other anthropogenic influences are the main driving factors for changes in marine ecosystems. Characterising these changes is of great interest and can be made pos - sible through the adoption of marine shelled mollusca as bioindicators. Malta is renowned for its rich diversity of mollusc species, including rare and endemic ones. So, we analysed mollusc shell grit from two locations (St. Pauls Island/Selmunett Island and Marsaxlokk) to provide a species base - line list for future investigations. We identified a total of 7662 parts of marine shelled mollusca. 115 species were found at St. Pauls Island and 45 species at Marsaxlokk, belonging to a total of 60 fam - ilies (16 at both locations). To make both samples comparable, despite differences in sampling efforts, we formulated an individual-based species extrapolation curve for each location. With this, we calculated an estimated total species number of 134 at St. Pauls Island and of 49 at Marsaxlokk, for a set threshold of 6000 individuals, indicating a considerably lower mollusc diversity at the sec - ond location, putatively the result of higher human disturbance levels at the same location. The sub - stantial differences in mollusc species composition between the two localities, despite the small geo - graphical distance between the two, further underscores the importance of further related research. Vorliegende Untersuchung unternimmt im Rahmen des Expe- ditionsmaterials den Versuch, die Besiedlung von submarinen Al- genbeständen und Brandungshöhlen durch Mollusken darzustellen. Von den Mollusken wurden aufgesammelt: von den Amphineura die Polyplacophora (Solenogastres waren in keiner Probe enthalten!), von den Gastropoda die Prosobranchia, Opisthobranchia und Pul- monata sowie die Lamellibranchiata. Insgesamt wurden vom Verfasser 67 Proben gesammelt und quantitativ aufgearbeitet, davon entstammen 42 Proben aus dem freien Felslitoral und 25 Proben aus dem Inneren von Brandungs- höhlen. Von den 6j Proben wurden 53 gemeinsam von allen Ex- peditionsteilnehmern und Spezialisten bearbeitet, 14 Proben wurden vom Verfasser allein oder gemeinsam mit dem Botaniker J. C. Ernst gesammelt und verarbeitet. Als Probenfläche wurde im all- gemeinen Vie m2 mit der Seitenlänge 25 cm gewählt. In einigen Fällen besonderer Individuenarmut wurden 2 X Vie m2 abgesam- melt und bei zwei botanischen Aufsammlungen, die vom Verf. mit- bearbeitet wurden, 4 X Vie m2 (= 1U m2). Die Probenentnahme erfolgte mittels der freischwimmenden Tauchmethode, meist durch * Herrn Univ.-Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Marinelli zu seinem 60.
