Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

A PARTICIPATORY PROPAGANDA MODEL 2 Abstract Existing research on aspects of propaganda in a digital age tend to focus on isolated techniques or phenomena, such as fake news, trolls, memes, or botnets. Providing invaluable insight on the evolving human-technology interaction in creating new formats of persuasive messaging, these studies lend to an enriched understanding of modern propaganda methods. At the same time, the true effects and magnitude of successful influencing of large audiences in the digital age can only be understood if target audiences are perceived not only as ‘objects’ of influence, but as ‘subjects’ of persuasive communications as well. Drawing from vast available research, as well as original social network and content analyses conducted during the 2016 U.S. presidential elections, this paper presents a new, qualitatively enhanced, model of modern propaganda – “participatory propaganda” - and discusses its effects on modern democratic societies. September 2020 Stuttgart Universum Broke – 20th Anniversary Tour Zuletzt waren sie im Juli 2018 hierzulande zu sehen, jetzt kündigt die amerikanische Crossover-Band HED P.E. zum 20-jährigen Jubiläum ihres Hit-Albums „Broke“ eine entsprechend umfangreiche Tournee für den September 2020 an. Die Band aus dem kalifornischen Huntington Beach in Stuttgart am 9. September 2020 im Universum auf. Gegründet werden HED P.E. (PE steht für Planet Earth) 1994 im kalifornischen Huntington Beach von Frontmann Jahred (aka M.C.U.D. aka Jared Gomes), der sich zum Ziel setzt, die langjährige Punkrock-Tradition der Region mit G-Funk-gekoppeltem Hip- Hop zu verbinden – ein Sound, den er deswegen "G-Punk" nennt. Nach der großen Grunge-Welle zu Beginn der Neunziger ist die Musiklandschaft offener denn je für ihren kompromisslosen Crossover-Stil, der sie auch zu Vorreitern des Nu Metal macht. Großen Erfolg im Mainstream erreicht die Band in den frühen 2000ern mit ihrem zweiten Album „Broke” (2000) und mit dem dritten „Blackout” (2003); beide Alben erscheinen beim legendären Jive-Label. Nach drei weiteren Alben dann der Wechsel zum Indie Suburban Noize, bei dem „New World Orphans“ 2009 erscheint. 2019 schließlich wird ihr elftes Werk „Stampede” veröffentlicht. Jetzt feiert die Band das 20-jährige Jubiläum des ersten Hit-Albums „Broke“ mit einer passenden Motto-Tournee, auf der natürlich der Schwerpunkt auf ebendiesem Album liegen wird. Allerdings werden auch die übrigen Werke von HED P.E. im Set berücksichtigt werden.
