Helen Stevens Coolidge was devoted to preserving and improving Ashdale Farm, which her family had first acquired in 1729 and then farmed for six generations. With her husband’s support, she transformed the farm into an elegant agricultural estate that exemplified the gracious country living enjoyed then by wealthy Bostonians.

Oct. 3rd, 1904.1 My dear Mamma, I have been putting off writing to you during the voyage, intending to wait till I had arrived safely at Liverpool. However, they say that letters mailed at Queenstown, which we reach to- morrow will go without delay by a White Star steamer ; so I will send you a few lines at once and more when I am once more securely established on terra firma. The voyage has been delightful ; we have a very congenial party and have had, comparatively speaking, I believe, a very calm passage. I have not been troubled with seasickness at all, though a great many of the others have had slight attacks. The ship is rolling at present rather heavily, as is evidenced by my scratchy writing, but none of us object to that at all now. The fellows are all very pleasant, though one or two of the Westerners are rather unpolished, among them my only companion at St. John’s, Murray from Kansas. I rather wish I was to be with the representative of a more cultured and more enlightened district. My room-mate on board is Carothers from Ark.

    The title of Ray's memoir, "A Simple Sailor" is classic understatement - as submariner, sailor and patriot, Ray offers an inspiring example of one's sterling service to country. Ray was a major part of my albeit brief navy career – as my divisional, executive & commanding officer in the challenging submarine communities of Grilse and Rainbow he garnered my utmost respect and affection, as then-boss and now-friend. Ray's sea-going professionalism and leader- ship, coupled with a quiet humility and good sense of humour, were very much and still appreciated by us who served with him. Thank You Ray, for the memories and camara- derie, and especially for sharing your intriguing and very human story. Bob Emery, Leading Seaman RCN (Ret'd) Ray Hunt has penned a most appealing and readable story of his voyage through life. From his life as a boy in war torn England to submarine cap- tain and beyond, the reader is persuaded that life as a sailor is anything but simple. Many sailors will identify with the challenges and vagaries of life in the navy, and the great satis- faction of serving with a stalwart band of brothers.
