  • THE SCIENCE BEHIND the NAPA VALLEY APPELLATION an Examination of the Geology, Soils, and Climate That Define Napa Valley As a Premier Grape Growing Region
THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE NAPA VALLEY APPELLATION An examination of the geology, soils, and climate that define Napa Valley as a premier grape growing region. By Gerald D. Boyd Napa Valley is a name that conjures up many images, thoughtful reflections and names of legends and leaders that are emblematic of the contemporary meaning of the valley as a major wine region. In 1966, with the opening of his eponymous winery in Oakville, Robert Mondavi, Napa’s elder statesman, recognized the unique qualities of Napa Valley soils and the wines they produced. “We knew then that we had the climate, the soil and the varieties that made our own distinct style of wine that could be the equal of the great wines of the world, but it did require the winegrowing and the wisdom to know how to present it to the world.” By the early 1970s, in another part of the country, I became acutely aware of Napa’s growing reputation when I made my first wine trip to France. As a newly minted wine writer, based in Colorado, I sensed that California wines were on the verge of making a major impact in the world wine market and that Colorado was hardly a thriving wine region. Fact is, although California wines were gaining shelf space in Denver, it was clear that Americans were then more Euro-centric in their wine tastes. It was a sign I took to heart while planning for my first trips as a wine writer. I mistakenly figured that the French winemakers on my travel itinerary would be well versed on California wine, so I should be prepared.

  • SUGGESTIONS for POSSIBLE SHORT TRIPS to Get An
SUGGESTIONS FOR POSSIBLE SHORT TRIPS To get an introduction about the area near the conference: Why You Really Should Visit Italy's Outstanding Barolo Wine Region https://www.forbes.com/sites/catherinesabino/2018/10/28/why-you-really-should-visit-italys- outstanding-barolo-wine-region/#7bd3de632f89 Note that the Langa district is best visited by car. Because of its territory, the district is not accessible by train (except for Alba, which is connected to the railway system). However, driving in the Langa district should not be a problem since it is in the countryside and not in a big city. For reference, Bra and Alba have ~30,000 people each. Some of the villages referenced below are much smaller: Pollenzo (a subdivision of Bra) and Barolo have only ~700 people. Furthermore, besides the picturesque hills and the historic castles and buildings, this area is also about food and wine. So you can pair some of the suggestions below with the restaurant suggestions also available on the conference website. There are also several wine tours that are normally organized in the area and, besides the suggestions below, you can just search online for what suits your interest. 1) Tour of the Barolo Langa district: Barolo, La Morra, and Verduno Note: Requires a car. Also, distances are short and so one can break these itineraries into smaller ones as desired. Barolo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barolo,_Piedmont) is the town in the middle of the vineyards of nebbiolo grapes that produce the famous wine of the same name. It is a medieval village developed at the foot of the castle.

  • Bodegas Coviñas
Bodegas Coviñas Country Spain Region Valencia Appellation(s) Utiel Requena Producer Diego Morcillo Year Founded 1965 Farming Sustainable Harvest Method Manual and mechanical Social Media Instagram: @bodegas_covinas While nearly forgotten now, Utiel Requena was crowned one of Spain’s first DOs in the 1930’s. Approximately 45 miles off the SE coast of the Mediterranean, within the Comunitat Valenciana, here the arid, harsh climate from the northwest welcomes the strong Mediterranean influence of warming wind. The high altitude sites in Requena (1000m) are dotted with poor, organic soils of river rock, clay and limestone, making it the perfect setting for pesticide free farming practices. Utiel Requena is also the home of one of Spain’s most widely planted, and often overlooked red varietals, Bobal. Given the high elevation and acid retaining soils, Utiel Requena is also one of the seven regions permitted to produce sparkling wines brandished with DO Cava. Bodegas Coviñas, founded in 1965, is a union of the area’s most prominent landholders. It was founded in efforts to create a distillery to utilize the abundance of must from their individual wineries. During the dismal times under the dictator, General Francisco Franco, the lion’s share of vineyard production came from unionized cooperatives that employed thousands of landowners. Bodegas Coviñas has always strived to take care of the people of Utiel Requena, paying top dollar for the highest quality fruit - becoming the foundation on which the region survives. Diego Morcillo has been the winemaker at Grupo Coviñas for 15 years. Prior to that, he spent 5 years of work study at Bodegas Faustino in DOCa Rioja.

  • TRIENNIA by Bodegas Portia Triennia Is a Rare and Iconic Wine from the Portia Estate in Spain’S Exciting Ribera Del Duero Region
TRIENNIA by Bodegas Portia Triennia is a rare and iconic wine from the Portia estate in Spain’s exciting Ribera del Duero region. It is the outcome of a venture that began in the 1990s, when the Martinez family (owners of Bodegas Faustino, a leading producer of wines from Rioja), purchased nearly 400 acres of terrain, enjoying an eastern and southern orientation, in Ribero del Duero. Vineyards were planted chiefly with Tempranillo (known locally as Tinta Fina del País). The name Portia has a dual origin, both as a reference to the seventh satellite of the planet Uranus (representing the pioneer, inventor, creator and artist according to astrology), and the Latin word for a token offering made in ancient times as a symbol of gratitude toward the elements in return for a healthy and abundant harvest. Portia’s spectacular state-of-the-art winemaking facility is impressive. Commissioned by the Martinez family, the project represents the first-ever winemaking bodega designed by internationally famed architect Norman Foster, head of the award-winning London-based design team, Foster + Partners. PRODUCTION AREA Country: Spain Region: Ribera del Duero The grapes grow at an altitude of 2,559 feet above sea level on sandy clay soils. Vineyards are planted at an average density of 4,000 vines per acre. The beautiful label design of Triennia is an aerial view of the spectacular winery which was designed by famed architect Norman Foster. GRAPE VARIETIES 100% Tinta Fina del País (Tempranillo) PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature of 82ºF.

In attendance will be proprietors from more than 40 wineries in 13 global wine-producing regions, eight countries, and three continents. Of the 214 reviews of their wine by legendary critic Robert Parker, Jr., 200 were awarded 90 or more points and five received perfect 100- point scores. Also in attendance will be Ted Baseler of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars and Bo Barrett of Chateau Montelena, who will hold a special tasting on January 28, one day before the Festival officially begins, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the “Judgment of Paris.” At this notable event in U.S.
